In the evening, Zhang's eldest uncle arranged for someone to buy some fresh beef and mutton from a nearby town. Xu Di brought some barbecue seasonings and utensils with him. In the afternoon, he and his younger brothers cut meat into skewers. Before it even got dark, the barbecue grill in the yard was already lit.
Once the stove is lit, the meat skewers are placed on the ground, butter is brushed on, and then various barbecue seasonings are sprinkled on. Before long, the small courtyard is filled with the tempting aroma of barbecue.
Xu Di, wearing an apron with large sleeves, a cotton hat, and a mask, stood in front of the barbecue grill he had designed and had made himself, and began grilling in a very professional manner.
Xu Bai naturally knew how delicious the meat tasted when grilled like this. He sidled up to Xu Di without saying a word, his big eyes darting between Xu Di and the grilled meat on the stove. Xu Di pretended not to notice, staring intently at the skewers of meat in his hand. In the end, Xu Bai couldn't hold back any longer and whispered, "Brother, I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?"
Xu Di looked at Xu Bai and said, "You're wrong? Tell me, where did you go wrong?"
Xu Bai said, "I shouldn't be so sentimental. Actually, I don't like this sentimental version of myself either. Really, brother, I won't do this again. I'll listen to you. I will definitely work hard and grow into someone like you in the future, okay?"
Xu Di said, "No way, what's so good about being like me? You'd better not be like me."
Xu Bai said, "Brother, this is no fun if it continues like this. I know I'm a bit dramatic and I do a lot of things that you can't stand because I'm young. But I'm trying to correct myself. People need time to grow, and you have to give me that time, right?"
Xu Di nodded and said, "For the sake of our shared motherhood, I won't hold it against you. Just say what you have to say."
Xu Bai tugged at Xu Di's arm and said, "Brother, brother, your grilled meat is so delicious! How come you're so talented?"
Xu Di said, "So it was all for this little bit of barbecue I had. Look at you, so pathetic."
Xu Bai said with a grin, "In this life, there are two things: shouting and yelling. I just love the meat you grill."
Last time, Zhang Yuyuan and the others followed Xu Di around Ganzhou. They often had barbecues on the mountain. Xu Bai followed Granny Lu back to the capital. He had never eaten so much barbecue before. In addition, he was young and had a weak stomach. His family was very careful about what he ate. They never let him eat meat according to his whims. Besides, there was barbecue in the mansion, but it was never as delicious as the barbecue that Xu Di grilled.
Xu Di said, "I've finally seen you for who you are. You have no principles whatsoever, all for the sake of satisfying your appetite."
Xu Bai tugged at Xu Di's sleeve, gently shaking it as he said in a spoiled manner, "What right do I have to argue with my own brother? Brother, you're my own brother, why would I need to argue with you about my position? Don't worry, brother, I'll definitely listen to you from now on."
Xu Di was being pulled by Xu Bai's clothes so hard that he almost lost his grip on the meat skewers in his hand. He quickly said, "Alright, alright, I'm just afraid you'll grow up to be a spoiled brat. If you become a spoiled brat, it will ruin your life."
Xu Di said, "I know, I know. They are all my family. If they don't want what's best for me, who else would they want? I understand all of this."
Xu Di saw that Xu Bai was talking to him, but his eyes were fixed on the meat skewers he was grilling. He sighed, looked at the skewers in his hand, which were already cooked, took two skewers and handed them to Xu Bai, saying, "Try one first."
Xu Bai happily accepted it, thanked his brother, and then went to eat.
The courtyard inside the post station had four main rooms, a small backyard with a row of rear buildings, and the front yard was quite large; otherwise, five children wouldn't have been able to run around during the day.
Several lamps were lit in the courtyard. Xu Zhi and Zhang's four older brothers were skewering meat inside the house, while Xu Di set up a barbecue grill under the eaves. Xu Bai was too embarrassed to take the meat inside to eat in front of his older brothers and sisters, so he went to the wall next to him.
I had just taken a bite when I heard someone on the wall whisper, "Is this tasty?"
By the light of the courtyard lamp, Xu Bai looked up and saw a person wearing a white fox fur hat perched on the wall. The person didn't look very old.
Xu Bai held up the meat skewer in his hand and asked, "Is this what you mean? It's delicious." He then took a big bite. It was a skewer of grilled beef, and the flavor of the barbecue sauce had seeped into the meat. After being brushed with beef tallow and grilled over silver charcoal, the taste was simply irresistible.
As Xu Bai chewed, he said, "Of course it's delicious! Can't you smell how fragrant the barbecue is?"
Xu Bai took another bite, but didn't hear the person on the wall speaking. He looked up and said, "Haven't you ever eaten barbecue before?"
The person on the wall said, "Of course I've eaten it, but I've never had barbecue that tastes like this." His tone was filled with undisguised envy and longing.
Xu Di watched with amusement as Xu Bai ate bite after bite in front of the other person without offering them a taste. However, judging from the child's attire, he was not from an ordinary family. It was best not to give food to others casually, lest they suffer from stomach problems and have to come back for it.
Xu Bai finished the two skewers in a few bites, then moved closer to Xu Di. Xu Di said, "Wait a minute, what if your stomach can't handle eating so much? Have you forgotten why we came here?"
Xu Bai sighed and said, "I really hate this small body of mine now. I can't eat meat or drink alcohol in large quantities. I can only think about the pleasures of life, but I can't experience them."
