Chapter 18 Worries

Xu Di really couldn't bear to eat those vegetables often. He had only planted a small amount to begin with. He planted them partly to find out what kind of seeds they were, and partly to harvest more seeds for use. What made Xu Di happiest was that there were indeed chili pepper seeds among them, and all the seeds he planted had sprouted and grown. There were quite a few seeds in just one chili pepper. If he harvested them all, he estimated that he would have a lot of seeds.

With the New Year approaching, Granny Lu made new silk cotton-padded jackets and trousers for Xu Zhi, all in bright red. After trying them on, Xu Zhi felt a little embarrassed looking at her chubby self in this bright red outfit, because seeing herself like this reminded her of the bright red firecrackers set off during the New Year.

Xu Rao, Zhang Zhaoci, and Xu Di kept praising Xu Zhi's beautiful outfit and Lu Mama's excellent craftsmanship. This gave Lu Mama some renewed confidence, and she felt that if she taught Xu Zhi slowly in the future, she might really be able to teach Xu Zhi into a socialite.

There were so many things to prepare for the New Year that Zhang Zhaoci couldn't manage them all. She left all the household affairs to Xu Di and Granny Lu. Granny Lu felt that as the head of the household, it was Zhang Zhaoci's responsibility. However, Zhang Zhaoci was picked up by the General's Mansion carriage every morning and stayed there all day. She couldn't even take care of herself properly, let alone manage the household affairs. Granny Lu watched as Zhang Zhaoci grew thinner and thinner day by day.

Xu Di naturally knew that his parents were both career-oriented people; otherwise, how could one have become a top surgeon at the best hospital in Beijing, and the other a renowned scholar and professor? People who are passionate about their work will do everything they can to do their best wherever they go.

Xu Di knew that even in this evil old society, a small courtyard could not confine his mother's soul. Even if he didn't have the opportunity given by the Marquis of Jingbei, his mother would have a better opportunity in the future.

Xu Di discussed with Granny Lu and arranged for Granny Zhao to lead the household servants to clean and prepare for the New Year. Every day, the small courtyard was filled with the aroma of delicious food.

During the years Xu Di was abroad working on projects, he couldn't get used to the foreign food, so he cooked for himself. Back in China, he often cooked at home. Among the three of them, Xu Rao and Zhang Zhaoci felt that their son had the most time. He was always at school, and after school, he had so much time to cook a meal. So, Zhang Zhaoci and Xu Rao taught Xu Di to cook. Xu Di was also a quick learner, and he managed to become the best cook in the family. Later, after they went abroad, whenever they wanted to eat something that they couldn't buy on the street, they would look up recipes online and cook it themselves.

Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, Xu Di thought of many local delicacies, wrote down the recipes, and then worked with Sister He, who was in charge of cooking, to put them into practice. They managed to make quite a few delicious dishes.

Whether it's southern snacks or northern Sachima, Xu Di made them all, but because he had to buy all sorts of ingredients, it cost him a lot of money.

Looking at the bill in her hand, Granny Lu felt a pang of heartache. Zhang Zhaoci and Xu Rao, on the other hand, kept advising Granny Lu, saying that this was the only time of the year, and that if the child was happy, she should let him do it. They added, "Didn't you see that Xiao Jiu's eyes were squinting as he ate?"

Indeed, Xu Zhi had never seen so much food before. Every single dish was so delicious. She tried everything – steamed, fried, boiled, steamed – and so on. Every day, her little belly was round and bulging, just like a little mouse that had fallen into a rice jar. Every morning, she would follow Xu Di around, constantly asking what she could eat that day.

The New Year is approaching, and everywhere is bustling with activity. However, the soldiers on guard and the people in the government offices are on edge the whole time. The closer it gets to the New Year, the more they need to keep their eyes wide open and guard their posts well.

Zhang Zhaoci and the military doctors used up all the medicinal herbs they had on hand to make wound medicine, producing a large batch of it. By the time they finished making the medicine, it was New Year's Eve. Zhang Zhaoci didn't go out; instead, he stayed home and helped with the preparations.

The New Year's gifts to be sent home were sent long ago and are probably already at the Xu family's house. The family has also prepared all the New Year's goods. Xu Di went to the street and bought two large vats. After cleaning them, he placed them against the south wall of the courtyard. He put the prepared food, steamed oat buns, steamed buns made with wheat flour, flower rolls, jujube cakes, and steamed rice cakes that had been cooled into the vats. Some of these things were made with the help of Granny Lu, and some were made by Xu Di himself. Granny Lu was amazed by Xu Di's ability to do things at such a young age. Xu Di said that he learned them from the locals when he was away from home. It was really amazing that a boy could learn to do these things.
