Xu Zhi and Zheng Yuanyuan had a good relationship to begin with, and now that they were sisters-in-law, there was no distance between them at all, and they chatted happily.
After the banquet in the front yard ended and the banquet in the side hall of the back yard was also coming to a close, Zheng Yuanyuan went to the second gate to see off the ladies who had come to attend the wedding. Only after seeing off all the guests did Zheng Yuanyuan finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Upon arriving at the backyard, the new house was bustling with activity. The four maids Xu Zhi had brought were busy tidying up, while Zheng Yuanyuan and Xu Zhi sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) inside, chatting and laughing. They covered their mouths and smiled so hard their eyes narrowed into slits, as if they were talking about something funny.
It was the first time Zheng Boyuan had ever realized that his younger sister had such a lively and vibrant side. He couldn't help but feel that getting married wasn't such a bad thing after all; at least, the family suddenly had a lot more life.
Seeing Zheng Boyuan come in, Zheng Yuanyuan was about to get off the kang (a heated brick bed) and put on her shoes when Zheng Boyuan waved her off. She sat down on the edge of the kang and asked, "What are you talking about? You seem so happy."
Zheng Yuanyuan looked at Xu Zhi and said, "My sister-in-law told me about some interesting people in this city when they lived in Hexi."
Zheng Boyuan turned to look at Xu Zhi, who was sitting upright on the kang. Xu Zhi was looking at him with a smile in her eyes. He couldn't help but laugh and say, "Your sister-in-law came to Hexi when she was very young. She also watched this city being built. If we're talking about understanding, neither of us understands this place as well as your sister-in-law."
Xu Zhi nodded and said with a smile, "That's really true. I still remember what this city looked like before it was built. In that great battle, most of the county was destroyed, and in the end, it was simply demolished and rebuilt."
The three of them sat around the kang table and chatted briefly. Zheng Yuanyuan noticed it was getting late and said she was going back to sleep.
After seeing Zheng Yuanyuan off, Zheng Boyuan looked at Xu Zhi, who seemed a little uneasy, coughed lightly twice, and said, "From now on, this room is yours. I will rest in the study in the front yard. I have already discussed it with my parents-in-law. We will consummate our marriage after you come of age."
Xu Zhi blushed and nodded gently, saying, "I'll have to trouble Brother Zheng to take good care of me in the future."
Seeing Xu Zhi's appearance, Zheng Boyuan couldn't help but smile and said, "We should take care of each other. It's getting late, you should rest. We can talk again tomorrow morning."
Xu Zhi escorted Zheng Boyuan all the way to the front gate, and only after watching Zheng Boyuan's figure disappear into the distance did she go back inside to wash up.
Xu Zhi's four maids were all efficient and quiet people. After being carefully trained by Granny Lu, they each performed their duties and were both thoughtful and meticulous in their work. After the four maids helped Xu Zhi wash up, Xu Zhi changed into her pajamas and lay down on the kang that had been prepared.
It's still very cold. Although there's a bed in the room, Xu Zhi prefers to sleep on the kang (heated brick bed), which is already quite warm. The room is next to a window, which is covered with paper and has thick curtains drawn. There's an oil lamp with a glass shade on a small table in the room, making the room a little warmer.
Xu Zhi didn't like anyone being in her room at night, so her maids would serve her well before going back to their own rooms to sleep. Xu Zhi lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), listening to the sound of the wind outside. The sound wasn't loud, but because it was late at night, the wind sounded very clear.
It was warm under her body; the room had a heated wall, so it wasn't cold. Xu Zhi tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Today was her wedding day; she was marrying the person she had longed for for many years. Xu Zhi found it somewhat unbelievable, but it was actually true.
Xu Zhi's mind began to wander back to those things that had happened in the past, or those things that existed in her mind and had become part of her memory. She didn't know when she finally fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up again, the room was still dark, but a few rays of bright light shone through the gap in the curtains. Xu Zhi's heart skipped a beat. Ignoring the cold outside the blanket, she sat up and pulled the curtains open, only to see a bright ray of sunshine outside.
Xu Zhi couldn't help but groan. What time was it? No one had come to wake her up.
Xu Zhi frantically searched for clothes to put on when Bai Ji, who had heard the commotion inside, knocked on the door and came in. Seeing that Xu Zhi was already sitting up, she quickly said, "Miss, please lie down first, I'll get you some clothes."
Xu Zhi saw Bai Ji and asked, "What time is it? Why didn't you wake me up?"
Bai Ji said, "It's already Chen Shi (7-9 AM). The young master said that you were tired all day yesterday and wanted you to sleep a little longer."
Xu Zhi said, "Quickly bring me my clothes and water to wash my face. Are you ready?"
Bai Ji said, "Girl, everything is ready."
Bai Su and Bai Guo came in carrying a washbasin.
There was a dressing table in the room, which Xu Zhi bought herself in Ganzhou. It was sent here a few days before the wedding and was now quietly leaning against the headboard of the bed.
After Xu Zhi washed her face and sat down in front of the dressing table, Bai Guo quickly took out a few pieces of jewelry. Xu Zhi said, "Just do a simple hairstyle, nothing too complicated."
Bai Guo learned the skill of combing hair from the nanny in the mansion. After combing Xu Zhi's hair, she quickly tied it up, pinned it with a hairpin, and added a few exquisite pieces of jewelry.
When Xu Zhi saw herself with her hair styled like a married woman, she stared at herself for a few moments before standing up and asking, "Where is the son-in-law?"
Bai Guo said, "The young master is in the study in the front yard. He told me to call him over when you wake up, young lady. He's having breakfast with you in the side hall here."
