Xu Bai held Chen Zhaoci's hand and said, "Mother, how can I be at ease if I don't go with you? Please let us go. We promise we won't cause you any trouble."
After listening to Xu Bai's words, Chen Yuyuan kept nodding to Chen Zhaoci. Chen Zhaoci was very reluctant for the two children to go with them. The power of nature is truly immense, and the rain has been pouring down. What if there is a landslide behind them and something unexpected happens?
Wu Muyue said, "Zhaoci, let the two of them go with us."
Hearing this, Chen Zhaoci could only nod. Before leaving, he solemnly instructed, "You two, listen up. Take good care of your people. If anything happens, survival is the most important thing. Don't worry about anyone else, just focus on escaping. Do you understand?"
Xu Bai understood what his mother meant, but Chen Yuyuan was a little stunned after hearing it. However, seeing Chen Zhaoci looking at him, he could only nod. Chen Zhaoci said to the guards next to Chen Yuyuan, "Gentlemen, I'm entrusting these two children to you."
The rain outside had subsided considerably, and it was pitch black. Many shops on both sides of the street had lit lanterns, which illuminated the area and made it possible to see some things on the street.
Someone wearing a raincoat was running westward, which was the only way to enter the town. The town was located south of the road between Liaodong and Ganzhou, more than a mile away from that road. On one side of that road was a not-so-high mountain, and at the foot of the mountain was a village. The village was not very big. Chen Zhaoci saw all of this before entering the town.
As Chen Zhaoci walked westward with the group, he tried to recall the location of the village.
The mountains along the way are not very high and the terrain is gentle. If a landslide really occurs, the amount of soil and rocks sliding down the mountain should not be very large. However, the village is located at the foot of the mountain, and some families even live on the mountain. The fact that such a thing happened in the middle of the night is the most frightening thing. Danger comes in your sleep and you can't even escape.
After leaving the town, the road became difficult to walk on, and the path became increasingly muddy. Chen Zhaoci and Bai Wei were wearing deerskin boots, which were better than embroidered shoes as they were waterproof, but they were still uncomfortable after a while. They were walking in and out of the mud, and Chen Zhaoci felt that his feet were getting cold.
Seeing people lighting torches in the distance, and hearing the commotion of voices as they walked further, Chen Zhaoci was anxious to save the person and quickened his pace.
Upon entering, they discovered that the entire village had vanished. Some villagers who had managed to escape sat blankly in the mud, while a few others carrying torches who had come to help with the rescue were calling out to see where they could dig out any more survivors.
Because the incident happened while they were asleep, Chen Zhaoci, whose clothes were disheveled, sighed and quickly stepped forward to help check on them. Bai Wei and Bai Mi followed behind, also helping to check on some of the rescued people.
This was Xu Bai's first time facing a disaster. He stood there dumbfounded for a long time, not knowing what to do. It wasn't until he saw someone digging hard into the ground with a piece of wood that he came to his senses. He looked at Chen Yuyuan, who was standing there just like him, and said, "Yuan, let's hurry over and help rescue people."
Chen Yuyuan kept agreeing and followed behind Xu Bai, getting busy with the tasks.
The rain continued to fall in a fine drizzle. Chen Zhaoci, along with Bai Wei and Bai Mi, had finished examining the rescued villagers. Seeing that the rain was still falling, Chen Zhaoci found a local and said, "Young man, these people's injuries are not very serious, but they can't stay in the rain like this. The best course of action now is to get them to town as soon as possible and find a place where they can take shelter from the rain."
The man who was pulled aside by Chen Zhaoci was in his early twenties. Hearing Chen Zhaoci's words, he readily agreed and called out a name, saying, "Take a few people and take them all to the inn first. Tell Manager Li to settle them down and make them some ginger soup. I'll settle accounts with Manager Li later."
The man answered loudly and, along with several others, escorted the rescued person to the inn.
Chen Zhaoci thought for a moment and said to Bai Wei, "Bai Wei, you come with me to the inn. That way, we can look after each other if anything happens. Bai Mi will stay here with me and keep watch."
Bai Wei agreed and followed the group back to the inn.
The sky brightened slightly, but because it was still raining, everything seemed to be shrouded in a thick veil of mist. The shadowy ruins of collapsed walls and rubble were vaguely visible, and in some places, even the rooftops were not visible.
Thinking of those sleeping in the rooms, Chen Zhaoci felt a chill run through his body. Standing in the mud and water, he looked blankly at the people busy rescuing people.
From afar, I heard someone shouting, "Come quickly, there are still people here."
Several people ran after him, and Chen Zhaoci also ran over with his medicine box on his back. He saw someone pull a small figure out of a house that was half covered by earth and rocks. Chen Zhaoci quickly ran over and, by the light of the torch, found that it was a little girl whose clothes were so dirty that they could not be seen. She was lying on the ground, soaking wet.
Chen Zhaoci squatted down, gently patted the little girl's face, and said loudly, "Wake up, can you hear me?"
The little girl opened her eyes a crack and, panting heavily, whispered, "Madam, please save my grandmother."
Chen Zhaoci brushed the hair off the little girl's face and wiped the mud off her face. Only then did he realize that she was the same little girl from the pastry shop last night.
