Chapter 31 Backing

The town of Hexi still looks dilapidated from the outside, but the streets inside have been paved with stone slabs. Xu Rao also bought several houses near the county government office and built a very grand courtyard to serve as the local official school. The county has an instructor, and several scholars and graduates from outside the county are invited to enroll school-age children, some to begin their education and others to continue their studies. Xu Rao also organizes these scholars and graduates to go to the villages below during the off-season to teach people to read a few characters so that they are not illiterate. Because of this measure, the people of the county strongly support Xu Rao as their magistrate.

Located in the north, Hexi has a wide-open sky. When it rains, it's a sudden downpour, and afterwards the weather is sunny. Unlike the south, where during the plum rain season, the weather is gloomy all day long, and you always feel like your clothes are never dry.

Throughout the summer, the vegetables in the garden were harvested one after another. Zhang Zhaoci finally got to eat the tomato and egg stir-fry he had been longing for. Xu Rao often brought him a few cucumbers to smash. As for the cucumbers that didn't grow very well, Zhang Zhaoci made them into small pickles. In the evening, he would drink a big bowl of barley porridge and eat it with these small pickles without any other dishes.

Xu Di saved enough seeds for each type of vegetable. He distributed a lot of these vegetables to the villagers, and everyone is now looking forward to planting wheat and vegetables with the young master next year.

The chili peppers were finally ripe. Some were red and some were green. We picked the red ones one by one, carefully put them into a large basket, and put them in the sun to dry.
