Xu Zhi immediately took a carriage to the Ministry of War. From afar, she saw a thin figure standing at the door. As she walked in, she found Zheng Boyuan wearing the cotton coat she had brought him. The coat hung loosely on his body, and Zheng Boyuan's body was slightly hunched. When he saw Xu Zhi coming, a relieved smile appeared on his face.
For some reason, Xu Zhi's eyes started to sting when she saw the figure she had been longing for. When she got closer, Xu Zhi jumped off the carriage. Zheng Boyuan wanted to rush over to catch her, but for some reason, he stumbled. After trying his best to steady himself, he didn't dare to move anymore.
Xu Zhi lifted her skirt and ran to Zheng Boyuan. Through her tear-filled eyes, she saw Zheng Boyuan's smiling face. She wanted to give him a smile, but in the end, she couldn't manage one. She held Zheng Boyuan's hand and let the tears on her face flow silently and freely.
Zheng Boyuan wiped away Xu Zhi's tears and said gently, "I'm out now, aren't I? Don't be sad anymore."
Xu Zhi nodded, wiped her tears with her sleeve, and said, "Brother Boyuan, let's go home quickly. We've prepared pomelo leaves for you at home. Let's take a good bath first."
Xu Zhi supported Zheng Boyuan's arm and walked to the carriage. Zheng Boyuan stepped on a stool, trying to lift his foot onto it, but somehow he pulled on something and his face turned pale, with sweat even appearing on his forehead and temples.
Xu Zhi was startled and carefully helped Zheng Boyuan into the carriage. After they were seated, Xu Zhi began to check Zheng Boyuan's body.
Zheng Boyuan raised his arm to stop him, saying, "I'm fine, let's go home first."
Xu Zhi had no choice but to give up. When they got home, Zheng Boyuan asked Xi Jing'an to come and help him take a bath. Xu Zhi was worried that his old wounds were not healing well, so he wanted to take a look while he was taking a bath. Since the two of them had not yet consummated their marriage, it was inconvenient, so he asked Xi Jing'an to take a good look.
After helping Zheng Boyuan bathe and change clothes in the corner room, Xi Jing'an came out with red eyes. Xu Zhi asked him, "Jing'an, how are your general's injuries?"
Xi Jing'an wiped away his tears and said, "Madam, the general's wound is healing very well."
Xu Zhi nodded and said, "That's good, that's good. Jing'an, thank you for your hard work. The kitchen has made some hand-pulled noodles. Go and have a bowl first. I'll have someone clean up here."
Xi Jing'an opened his mouth, but seeing Xu Zhi's happy face, and thinking of the suffering his general's wife had endured these days, he bowed to Xu Zhi and went to the kitchen.
Zheng Boyuan had already changed his clothes. Xu Zhi helped him to sit down on the kang (a heated brick bed) in the room and said, "The kitchen made you some millet porridge. It's very fragrant and thick. Have a bowl first and rest well. We'll make you something else to eat later, okay?"
Zheng Boyuan held Xu Zhi's hand, nodded, and said, "It's all good, Ajiu. You've had a hard time these past few days. You should take a good rest."
At the Yongning Marquis's residence, Xu Rao returned home with a somber face. Chen Zhaoci, seeing him, asked in surprise, "I heard that Xiao Jiu brought Boyuan home today. Why do you look so somber? Did something happen?"
Xu Rao sat angrily in the chair and said to Chen Zhaoci, "Go to the Zheng residence later and give Boyuan a thorough check-up."
Chen Zhaoci was taken aback for a moment, then asked, "Was torture used?"
Xu Rao nodded and said, "It's also our fault for not thinking things through properly, allowing someone to take advantage of us. Just yesterday, you went and took a good look. This matter can't be left like this. The child suffered such a great injustice right under our noses. I went to see him as soon as I received the letter this morning. He was covered in injuries. You go. No, let's go together."
Without even having time to eat, Xu Rao helped Chen Zhaoci carry the medicine box and hurriedly headed towards the Zheng residence.
After drinking the rice porridge, Zheng Boyuan fell into a drowsy sleep. Seeing that Zheng Boyuan was sleeping soundly, Xu Zhi stayed by his side. When she heard her parents coming, she quickly went to the front yard to greet them.
Xu Zhi thought her parents had come because they knew Zheng Boyuan had returned, and said with a smile, "Dad, Mom, I brought Boyuan back. He just drank some rice porridge and fell asleep."
Xu Rao and Chen Zhaoci could tell from Xu Zhi's expression that Zheng Boyuan hadn't told Xu Zhi about his torture. Chen Zhaoci said, "I'm worried, so I've come over to check on Boyuan."
Xu Zhi nodded and said, "Mother, I was just about to send someone to tell you that I'm bringing Boyuan to our house tomorrow to ask you to take a look. Who knew you and Father would arrive so soon? You haven't eaten yet, have you? I'll go to the kitchen to make arrangements now."
Xu Rao quickly said, "It's a joyous occasion that Boyuan is coming back. Your mother and I will have dinner here with you. Go and make the arrangements. We'll go see Boyuan first."
Xu Zhi had Bai Ying take Xu Rao and Chen Zhaoci to the bedroom, while she went to the kitchen.
Upon seeing Zheng Boyuan lying on the bed, Xu Rao asked Bai Ying to wait outside while he and Chen Zhaoci gently untied the cotton-padded robe that Zheng Boyuan was wearing.
This series of movements woke Zheng Boyuan up. He opened his eyes and saw Shi Xuyao and Chen Zhaoci. He tried to sit up, but unfortunately, he was covered in wounds and didn't know where he had hurt himself. His face turned even paler.
Chen Zhaoci stopped him and said, "Boyuan, your father and I came to see you. Xiao Jiu doesn't know you're injured yet."
With Xu Rao's help, Zheng Boyuan slowly sat up and said, "Father-in-law and mother-in-law, don't let Ajiu know. It will only make her more upset. I'm already injured anyway, so I'll just take my time to heal."
Zheng Boyuan had whip marks, burns, and other injuries, which were only treated simply.
When Chen Zhaoci saw the wounds, her eyes immediately reddened, and she choked out, "Damn it, what kind of people are they? How can they be so heartless?"
Zheng Boyuan lay on the bed, listened to Chen Zhaoci's words, turned his head and gently comforted her, "Mother-in-law, they are just flesh wounds. They will be fine after careful rest. We soldiers are bound to get injured sometimes. Don't be sad, it's nothing."
Xu Rao looked at those things and felt a chill run down her spine. She never expected that someone would take advantage of such a loophole right under her nose. Xu Rao clenched her fists and felt utterly powerless.
Zheng Boyuan lay down and said to Chen Zhaoci, "Mother-in-law, I'll have to trouble you to apply the medicine for me quickly. It wouldn't be good if Ajiu saw it later."
Chen Zhaoci quickly opened his medicine box and treated all the wounds one by one. He looked at the original circular arrow wound, which had healed very well. Uncle Yu had been to the Ministry of War prison several times and told him that Zheng Boyuan's wound was recovering quite well. It seemed that external application and internal treatment were very effective for such wounds. He quickly wrote down the medical record so that if there were similar wounds in the future, he could follow this treatment plan without any problems.
Xu Rao helped Chen Zhaoci treat Zheng Boyuan's injuries. Then Chen Zhaoci carefully took Zheng Boyuan's pulse. His body was still a bit weak. Although he was young, he was still bleeding from the injury. If he didn't take good care of himself, it would leave some hidden dangers in his body in the future.
