Chapter 41 Overtime

Li, the registrar, had a car sent by his family to pick him up. He got into the car at the entrance of the county government office and went home.

When they arrived home, his wife was still awake, doing needlework with their two daughters. When she saw that Li Zhubu had returned, she quickly went to help him change his clothes, while the two daughters helped bring him water to wash his face and fetch his shoes from inside the house.

Li, the registrar, changed his clothes and washed his face with a smile before sitting down at the kang table. Madam Li had already poured him a cup of tea. Li took a sip and said, "It's getting late, everyone should rest early."

Since it wasn't their own courtyard, Clerk Li and his wife, along with their two daughters, lived in the second courtyard. The first courtyard was used as a reception area, while their son and his wife lived in the fourth courtyard. The third courtyard served as guest rooms. As for the last courtyard, although it was connected to the front courtyard by a moon gate, that moon gate was always locked. Clerk Li had instructed his family not to be curious about this courtyard, not to ask any questions, and not to come here.

In the last courtyard lived a few people sent by Wei Lang. There was a side gate at the back for them to enter and exit separately, and they had little contact with the Li family.

Madam Li handed Li a hot water bottle, saying, "Quickly warm up your back. It's so cold outside all day; your back must be aching terribly."

Li, the registrar, said, "It does hurt a bit, but it's bearable. Lord Xu said he'd have his wife prepare some plasters for me. Madam Xu's family has been a renowned family of doctors for centuries, and her medical skills are widely recognized. Who knows, maybe Madam Xu can really cure my back pain?"

Li Zhubu's back pain was caused by the hard work of studying at his desk when he was young. Moreover, the Li family was not well-off at that time. When they had money, they had to support Li Zhubu's studies for the imperial examinations. Even if he was sick, he would just endure it. He was young at the time and just let it go. Who would have thought that he would be in so much back pain while licking his back?

Upon hearing this, Madam Li happily said, "That's wonderful! I'll go to the Xu family in a couple of days and bring Madam Xu some of our homemade pickled vegetables. Last year, Madam Xu mentioned that they didn't make any at home and didn't know how to make them taste good. I'll bring some over and tell them how to make them."
