Some villages outside the city near the Miao River began to organize their evacuation in an orderly manner.
It's hard to leave one's homeland, but the frequent breaches of the Miao River's banks still leave the people on both sides with lingering fears. Now that the government has come to organize their evacuation, not many are stubbornly refusing to leave.
How to resettle the evacuees is also a big problem. Zheng Boyuan has surveyed the situation on both sides of the Miao River and decided to move the people upstream.
Zheng Boyuan and Chu Huaigui visited the Yun family and met with Old Madam Yun. They borrowed a place called Sanlizhuang, located upstream of the Miao River. Sanlizhuang was the Yun family's estate, which covered a vast area. The estate not only had villages for tenant farmers but also several large courtyards built by the Yun family. Most importantly, Sanlizhuang was situated on relatively high ground, backed by a not-too-steep mountain ridge. If a flood were to reach Sanlizhuang, there would still be a way out.
Zheng Boyuan originally planned to evacuate the people before the rain came, but when the weather was clear, no one was willing to leave their homes and businesses. So they could only wait until the rain came and the Miao River rose before the nearby people were taken westward.
In Miaozhou City, the people from several nearby villages had been evacuated to the government office for resettlement. Ping and Ming led people to help the government office staff with the resettlement, while Xu Zhi and Bai Ying helped cook ginger soup in the government office kitchen and then delivered it in a large wooden bucket.
Bai Zhu carried his medicine box and sat down for a consultation with the old doctor from the city clinic in a room in front of the government office. Although it was summer, it rained all the time, making it damp and wet, and many people caught a chill.
Bai Shu, a young woman, sat with several elderly doctors. Many people came in and went straight to the doctors. Bai Shu was not in a hurry and just sat there calmly. Until the area in front of the doctors was crowded, a man came in carrying a five or six-year-old child who had caught a cold and had a fever.
Seeing that the child's face was flushed from the fever, Bai Shu quickly stood up and helped the man place the child on a couch to the side. After the man settled the child, he looked anxiously at the senior doctors. Bai Shu had already undressed the child and started taking his pulse.
When a child has a high fever, it can easily lead to other health problems. Bai Zhu remembered his wife's instructions, took the child's pulse, and knew that it was caused by cold. He then took off the child's clothes to cool the child down physically.
When the man saw Bai Shu's movements, he quickly stopped her, saying, "Young lady, the doctor hasn't examined you yet, don't move around."
Bai Zhu continued working, saying, "I am the doctor. Your child's fever is too high. Let's bring the fever down now."
The man blocked her way. Hong Gu was just coming over to ask Bai Shu for some medicinal herbs when she saw a man trying to pull her away. She quickly went over and said, "Brother, what are you doing?"
The man said anxiously, "My child is sick, and I brought him here to find a doctor to take a look, but this young lady is stopping me from seeing a doctor."
Hong Gu knew that Bai Shu looked young, and most importantly, she was a girl. People outside really didn't believe that she could treat illnesses.
Hong Gu looked at the elderly doctor surrounded by a crowd and said, "Brother, our daughter is indeed a doctor. Don't underestimate her just because she's young; she's just as good at treating patients as those older doctors."
The man ignored Hong Gu's explanation and stepped forward to push Bai Shu away to hug the child. Hong Gu was right there and couldn't let Bai Shu be pushed in front of her. She grabbed the man's arm and with a slight pull, the man staggered and almost fell to the ground.
The man was stunned for a moment, then shouted, "Are you trying to take my child? This is my child, why won't you let me hold my child?"
Bai Zhu had already undressed the child completely, then took a bottle of alcohol that Chen Zhaoci had purified himself from the medicine box. He then used tweezers to pick up a few pieces of cotton wool, dipped them in the alcohol, and began to wipe the child's armpits, groin, and other areas.
After Bai Zhu treated the child urgently, he said to Hong Gu, "Hong Gu, the child's fever is too high. If we don't bring the fever down soon, he might develop other illnesses. I'll open a room for you. Have Bai Ying quickly get the medicine and decoct it for him. We need to be quick!"
Hong Gu glanced at the man glaring at her, nodded to Bai Shu, and Bai Shu quickly wrote out a prescription. After handing the prescription to Hong Gu, Bai Shu said to the man, "Instead of getting angry here, why don't you come and help? Your child's fever is really high right now. Even if you go to see some senior doctors, they will have to find a way to bring the fever down first."
The man gritted his teeth and came over to ask, "Young lady, what do you want me to do?"
Bai Shu said to the man, "Go to the kitchen and find a Granny Zhao. Tell her that Bai Shu sent you. Ask her to give you a basin of hot water and two handkerchiefs. I need them."
The man agreed and ran towards the government office's kitchen in the rain. Today, the kitchen had brewed ginger soup, and almost everyone had a bowl. The man naturally knew where the kitchen was.
When the man brought over a basin of boiling water, Bai Zhu soaked a handkerchief in it. Once the handkerchief wasn't so hot, she continued to wipe the child's entire body, especially the armpits, groin, elbows, and knees. When the water in the basin wasn't so hot anymore, she went to get a new basin of hot water. After working like this for a while, Bai Ying gathered the herbs from Bai Zhu's prescription, decocted them, and brought them over. She then fed the child the medicine, and after the child broke out in a sweat, the fever gradually subsided.
Hong Gu went to find a thin quilt and covered the child with it. Then she let the child lie on the low couch. The man saw that the child's fever had subsided and he was sleeping peacefully with his eyes closed. Only then did he thank Bai Shu.
Bai Zhu had been busy for a long time, her forehead covered in sweat. She wiped the sweat away and said, "I also want to thank you for not letting me off the hook. You looked down on me because I'm a young girl. Your child just caught a cold. I'll prescribe two doses of medicine and he'll be fine. Just be careful not to catch a cold again. It would be troublesome if he caught a cold and got a fever again."
