Chapter 1 Reunion
At seven o'clock in the morning, the streets and alleys of Beijing were filled with the hustle and bustle of life, but the operating room of Peking University Affiliated Hospital was a little deserted, with only a few operating room signs with red lights on and the occasional doctor or nurse walking by.
The extinguishing of a red light signifies the end of an operation. The patient on the operating table may be reborn, or die forever. For the anxiously awaiting family members outside the operating room, everything remains uncertain.
The light green door of the operating room slowly opened, and several doctors and nurses walked out. Leading them was a thin young man with a tall stature.
Zhou Jingzhan raised his hand and pulled down the ear strap on one side of the mask. His hands were slender and well-defined. The mask fell along his angular jawline, revealing a handsome face. The teardrop mole at the corner of his eye made him look a little more disrespectful.
When the patient's family saw him come out, they hurried forward to ask about the situation: "How is the doctor? Was the operation successful? Is my wife okay?"
"The operation was successful, the patient's condition has stabilized and he will be returned to the ward later."
Upon hearing this, the patient's family members kept bowing: "Thank you, thank you."
Rib fracture combined with hemothorax is considered extremely risky in the eyes of the patient's family, after all, it involves a family.
"You're welcome. It's my pleasure."
Zhou Jingzhan has always been a man of few words. Today is Monday, and the department is having a general ward round. He also ran into an intern reporting in. He had a lot of things to do, so he left first.
The patient's family wanted to catch up and say something, but was stopped by another young doctor: "That was Director Zhou, the youngest deputy chief physician in the hospital. You can relax and let him perform the operation."
Zhou Jingzhan's life experience can be described as a cheat. He took the college entrance examination and was admitted to Peking University at the age of 16. Eight years later, he obtained a double doctorate in medicine and finance. Two years after graduation, a large-scale disease broke out in China. He was among the first batch of people to rush to the hardest-hit areas. Then he went to the medical center of Country Y for an exchange for two years. Half a year ago, he returned to China and was rated as an associate professor. At the age of 28, he became a god-like figure in the domestic medical community.
After Zhou Jingzhan left the operating room, he entered the elevator. Although he was extremely tired, he still stood there coldly, but there was an unconcealable fatigue between his brows.
The cell phone rang. It was Zhang Fang, the attending physician in the orthopedics department. His childhood friend, Zhou Jingzhan, took out his phone from his pocket and answered: "Hello?" His voice was obviously a little hoarse, which was very inconsistent with his exquisite appearance.
"You haven't slept yet? Aren't you going to work in the morning?" Zhang Fang completely forgot his purpose and asked with concern.
Zhou Jingzhan rubbed his brows tiredly. "A patient who was in a car accident was sent to the emergency room in the middle of the night and just came out of surgery. What do you want from me so early in the morning?"
Zhang Fang was afraid that he would fall asleep on the spot, so he briefly mentioned that he was going to have a drink with some friends that night.
These second-generation people have been friends since their fathers' generation. They grew up together and would get together whenever they had time. Zhou Jingzhan thought it was just an ordinary dinner and refused.
In the past, Zhang Fang would have been calm. They were all medical students, and they all knew how busy and tired they were. But today was a special case. He begged desperately, "Give me some face, young master. I have something important to do tonight."
Zhang Fang always liked to exaggerate, but Zhou Jingzhan didn't take it seriously and replied, "Okay, I'll come over tonight if I have nothing to do."
Back in the cardiothoracic surgery department, as soon as the elevator door opened, the young nurse Taozi called out to him anxiously. Zhou Jingzhan was puzzled: "What's wrong? Why are you in such a hurry?"
Taozi stopped and said, "Today, we have a new person in our department, a professor who came back from Country M. He is very young and very handsome. The dean brought him here personally. We are waiting for you now, so hurry up."
Finally, there's someone capable in cardiothoracic surgery! Zhou Jingzhan was ecstatic, and his attitude improved a lot.
The office door was ajar, and I could see part of my new colleague's body without going in... Why does he look a little familiar?
Without having time to take a few more glances, Zhou Jingzhan was so eager to see his new colleague that he pushed the door open and came face to face with him.
After seeing the face of his new colleague, Zhou Jingzhan's eyes went dark, and his hand on the door handle clenched tightly. He suddenly understood what Zhang Fang was going to say. He felt complicated and didn't know what to do for a moment.
The new colleague sitting next to the dean has a deep connection with Zhou Jingzhan. They have been calling each other brothers for the past 17 years of their lives. They started dating on Chu Yunqi's 18th birthday. Three years later, Chu Yunqi went abroad and the two broke up completely.
During these seven years, except for the Chinese New Year when the two families had to meet each other, the two had almost no time to spend together.
In addition, Chu Yunqi was born with a pair of peach blossom eyes. He didn't need to show much emotion, his eyes were full of affection just by looking at him, not to mention that he was looking at Zhou Jingzhan with the eyes of looking at prey. Just one look could hook a person's soul away.
Zhou Jingzhan was a little afraid to face her ex-boyfriend who was about to become her colleague and she would be with him day and night. She stood at the door, not knowing whether to leave or stay.
The dean was getting impatient and urged, "Come here quickly, we're all waiting for you."
Zhou Jingzhan loosened his clenched hands that were aching, and his eyes met Chu Yunqi's charming gaze. Under his gaze, he got goosebumps all over his body and raised his foot to leave.
Seeing him so anxious, the dean said sternly, "Zhou Jingzhan! Where are you going?! You saw the students and left without saying hello? You don't have any objections to the newcomers in the department?"
Hearing Dean Su's angry voice, Zhou Jingzhan stopped, blinked his sore eyes and turned around: "I have no objection." His voice was still hoarse, purely because he was tired from staying up late.
Hearing his hoarse voice, Chu Yunqi frowned slightly.
It was hard not to notice how tired he was. Dean Su's heart softened, and his tone and attitude softened a little: "Come sit down."
Zhou Jingzhan didn't want to make things awkward, so he sat quietly eight feet away from Chu Yunqi.
Dean Su ignored him and introduced Chu Yunqi as planned.
Zhou Jingzhan didn't know why, but he felt bad whenever he saw Chu Yunqi. He felt a surge of anger in his chest. When he heard the dean say that, it seemed like he had found an opportunity: "The hospital is not without highly educated doctors. Isn't it unfair to other colleagues for him to be given this position right after taking office?"
What Zhou Jingzhan said was not wrong. There were a lot of people with high academic qualifications in the hospital, but there was really no one else with a resume like Chu Yunqi. He said this simply because he didn't want Chu Yunqi to have an easy time.
From beginning to end, Chu Yunqi's eyes never left Zhou Jingzhan. He didn't feel any emotion when he heard his words. It was as expected.
Seeing Zhou Jingzhan being so aggressive, the dean glanced at Chu Yunqi who looked calm beside him. He didn't expect that the two of them had such a deep grudge. What a pity.
Both of them are his favorite students, and he would feel bad if he wronged either of them. Faced with this dilemma, Dean Su finally chose to favor Chu Yunqi.
Before he could open his mouth to stop Zhou Jingzhan, Chu Yunqi, who had been silent all this time, suddenly spoke up: "Then I'll start as an intern."
Everyone in the conference room widened their eyes. Probably no one expected that a professor would condescend to offer to start as an intern.
The dean was the first to react and whispered, "Yunqi, he's just too ignorant of his own limitations. Don't spoil him like this."
"It's okay, Dean. It's the same everywhere anyway. I don't care about these things." After saying that, Chu Yunqi shifted his gaze to Zhou Jingzhan again: "I only accept you to lead me."
After saying this, Zhou Jingzhan's ears turned red, and his heart trembled: "I bu..."
Zhou Jingzhan wanted to refuse, not only because of personal grudges, but more because he felt that Chu Yunqi was sick.
Dean Su interrupted him in time: "Okay, this matter has been decided. Let's adjourn the meeting."
Zhou Jingzhan felt very aggrieved and ignored everyone. When no one was around, he glared at Chu Yunqi.
