Chapter 35 Resignation
The next day, after finishing his outpatient clinic in the morning, Chu Yunqi knocked on the door of the dean's office.
Dean Su felt very complicated when he saw him, "Come and sit down."
Chu Yunqi sat on the chair and was silent for two seconds before speaking, "Teacher Su, I want to resign. I'm not very interested in medicine, as you know."
After hearing what he said, Dean Su sighed. He had expected this day to come, but he didn't expect it to come so soon. He took out a folder from the drawer and placed it in front of Chu Yunqi.
Chu Yunqi flipped through it and saw that it was a statistical table of the years his papers were published. "This is..."
"Professor Bai Xi compiled this for me," Dean Su said, taking the folder back and flipping through it. "When you were in college, you co-authored three papers with Jing Zhan. I thought that was quite impressive. But you published so many papers in your two years as a graduate student, with almost no bottleneck period. I was surprised when Professor Bai Xi gave me this data. If I'm not mistaken, your relationship was not going well during these two years, so you devoted all your energy to your studies, right?"
Chu Yunqi did not answer.
Dean Su didn't mind and continued, "In your first PhD, you were Professor Bo Xi's student and published seven papers, which is not bad. In your second PhD, this year was your most published year, with 13 papers. Professor Bo Xi said he forced you to write them. He told me that he could see you were exhausted, but he didn't regret it, and it didn't matter even if you hated him. Then you graduated. Last year you published two papers, and so far this year you haven't published any."
"You're right. When I was in graduate school, I had just broken up with Zhou Jingzhan and couldn't adjust, so I could only focus on my studies to keep him out of my mind. Later, I gradually accepted my life without him and was able to spend my spare time pursuing my interests. When Bo Xi found out, he gave me a strict order, and I completed it on time. But I didn't expect him to stay in the United States during my second year of doctoral studies. Just like he said, it wasn't what I wanted to write. In fact, the only two articles I wrote from the bottom of my heart were those last year, and they had little to do with clinical medicine."
Dean Su was extremely anxious when he heard that he was still stubborn. He said earnestly, "Yunqi, I know you originally wanted to study business, but you chose clinical medicine because of your mother's connections. I believe you could do well in business now, but the problem is that you've already been in the medical field for ten years. Ten years is a long time, and life doesn't last many decades. If you give up now, you'll regret it later."
"It's precisely because I know this that I don't want to waste any more time. Isn't it wrong to give up as soon as possible?"
Dean Su was about to be defeated by his logic, but thankfully he didn't give in. He once again offered earnest advice, "You've been abroad for too long and don't understand the domestic situation. Every year, countless Chinese university graduates rush out with enthusiasm to start businesses, yet few succeed. Starting your own business is incredibly difficult. Why give up everything you have now to relearn something so unfamiliar? If you had no talent for medicine, you'd have remained mediocre for all these years. But you possess talent. Even with your lack of focus, you've achieved what you have today. I truly can't bear to see you leave the medical field. Professor Bai Xi and the others surely feel the same way. Since you've already invested a decade in this field, why not try to cultivate your love for it? You have so much to look forward to in the future. Professor Bai Xi and I both believe you have a strong chance of becoming an academician by the age of thirty-five, or even before thirty, provided you remain committed to the medical field."
Chu Yunqi hadn't expected that Dean Su's promise to resign at any time if he didn't want to do it would be so difficult to fulfill, but he still wanted to fight for it. "I can tell you very clearly that I don't like medicine. No matter how much fame I have in the future, I won't be happy."
Dean Su couldn't help but feel a little angry that Chu Yunqi was still stubborn after all the talk, but he didn't show it obviously. Instead, he sat opposite Chu Yunqi, sent a message to Ding Xinye, and continued to persuade him.
Ding Xinye came up quickly, and Chu Yunqi stood up to offer his seat, "Uncle."
"Yeah." Ding Xinye replied calmly, then asked knowingly, "Didn't you ask for leave? Why are you here?"
"I have something to ask Dean Su. You go ahead and I'll come back later." Chu Yunqi wanted to run away.
But Ding Xinye didn't give him the chance. "No need. It's nothing important. You go ahead and tell me first." Then he picked up the resignation letter on the table.
Chu Yunqi felt something was wrong and kept winking at Dean Su, but unfortunately he was ignored.
When Ding Xinye saw the signature, the pressure around him suddenly dropped. He spread the letter flat on the table and asked, "Are you resigning?"
This time, Chu Yunqi was determined not to compromise, so he answered neither humbly nor arrogantly, "Yes."
"Who did you discuss this with?" Ding Xinye was intimidating without being angry, and he gave off a strong sense of oppression.
Chu Yunqi had been afraid of his uncle since he was a child, but he didn't want to delay pursuing his career any longer, so he replied firmly, "I make my own decisions."
"Zhou Jingzhan allowed you to do whatever you wanted in the cardiothoracic surgery department. I think you're living too comfortably. If you don't want to stay here, then go find another place. It just so happens that major hospitals are organizing experts to come to other places for consultations, and the cardiothoracic surgery department is right for you."
Going to a county hospital in another city would be worse than letting him die. Chu Yunqi refused flatly, "I won't go."
Ding Xinye didn't want to waste time talking to him, so he called Chu Shaobo directly. He knew that Chu Yunqi was most afraid of his father.
The call was quickly connected, "Brother-in-law."
After hearing Ding Xinye's words, Chu Yunqi understood who he was calling.
Chu Yunqi didn't hear what Chu Shaobo said on the phone at all. Before Ding Xinye could say the second sentence, he said in a low voice, "I'll go."
After he finished speaking, Chu Yunqi's eyes were red. He turned his head to the side, not looking at Dean Su and his uncle. When things came to this point, he could tell with the back of his head that the two of them had joined forces to deal with him.
After receiving a satisfactory answer, Ding Xinye immediately changed the subject, "Dad said he missed you guys and asked me to go back and see him when I have time. We'll talk later, brother-in-law. Okay, goodbye."
After hanging up the phone, Chu Yunqi left without looking back. Ding Xinye also left the office after saying hello to Dean Su.
Ding Xinye caught up with Chu Yunqi in the same elevator. His beloved nephew was so angry that he dared not say anything and could only take a step back with red eyes.
His method might be useful to Zhou Jingzhan, but it is of no use to Ding Xinye.
Ding Xinye was many times angrier than he showed.
