Chapter 55
Chen Zhiyi thought he would have a chance to catch his breath after filming this action scene, but as soon as the scene was over, the director pulled him aside to discuss the content of the next scene.
Lin Ting didn't go forward, but retreated to a more secluded corner to wait for him.
She loved watching him work – focused, dedicated, and passionate. Indeed, a man who works seriously is the most attractive.
Suddenly, a hurried shout rang out, "Girl in white hoodie, move aside! The ceiling light fixture is about to fall down!"
Before Lin Ting could react—she was wearing a white hoodie today—a figure quickly grabbed her and fell to the ground. Immediately afterward, a huge light fell from the ceiling and hit the person who had grabbed her hard on the back of the head.
Everyone was terrified and ran towards them. Cries for help, footsteps, shouts of dialing 120 and other urgent sounds swept over them.
Without any warning, Lin Ting felt her mind go completely blank.
She saw the shattered glass lamp on the floor, some parts stained with blood, which gave her an idea of the force of the impact.
A faint voice whispered in my ear, "Are you alright?"
Suddenly realizing what was happening, Lin Ting saw that the person who had thrown himself on top of her and shielded her from the light was Chen Zhiyi, whose face was turning pale.
The fear in my heart suddenly overwhelmed me.
Her hands trembled uncontrollably. She turned slightly to the side and rested Chen Zhiyi's head on her right shoulder. Then, she wrapped her right arm around his waist, supported herself with her left hand on the ground, and slowly sat up, letting him lie on top of her.
She reached out her left hand, trembling slightly, towards the back of his head, but he grasped it. His eyes softened, and he even gave her a reassuring smile, saying in a low voice, "Don't be afraid, I'm alright..."
When Ke Lin's palm touched the soaked clothes behind him, his eyes closed slightly, and his face turned completely bloodless. She trembled as she withdrew her hand, revealing a shocking patch of blood-red blood on her palm.
She suddenly couldn't breathe and felt like she was about to suffocate.
The crimson expanse grew larger and more distorted before my eyes.
At this moment, Zhang Ke also ran to their side. When she saw that Chen Zhiyi's head and back were covered in blood, she was terrified. Injuries were inevitable when filming, but she had never been this serious before. She was so anxious that her face turned red, and tears and sweat covered her face. She didn't know where to put her hands and kept sobbing in panic, "What should we do? What should we do?"
Chen Zhiyi, clinging to his last shred of consciousness, grabbed Zhang Ke's arm to calm her down and said with a heavy expression, "Contact Sister Fei immediately and have her handle this matter."
"I know, I know!" Zhang Ke was frantic, crying out to the director, "Where's the ambulance? When will it arrive?"
The director was also quite frightened. As the person in charge of the entire crew, it was the worst thing for the main actors to get injured on set. Minor injuries were a small matter, but the storm they would face if they were seriously injured was unimaginable.
But this shocking red color cannot fool anyone into thinking it's a minor injury, nothing serious.
Her voice trembled uncontrollably, "The ambulance will be here soon, we've already called for it."
Zhang Ke was so anxious that she blurted out, "You know that we're filming action scenes today, and the actors are prone to injury. The props are unsafe, and there are no protective measures. Director, you have to take full responsibility."
In fact, an artist's assistant has no right to yell at the director, but at this moment the director did not talk back and directly admitted his mistake, "Yes, yes, yes, it was my fault."
Zhang Ke wanted to say something, but Chen Zhiyi stopped her, saying there were more important things for him to worry about.
"I reckon this can't be kept secret any longer; it'll spread online very quickly. Just remember to say I was accidentally injured by a prop during filming, and don't say anything else, understand?"
"Okay." Zhang Ke understood Chen Zhiyi's intention: to protect Lin Ting.
"We also need to communicate well with the production team, and both sides must have the same story."
"good."
Lin Ting was utterly defeated and buried her face in Chen Zhiyi's neck, weeping bitterly.
He always puts himself first, but I always push him away and let him down.
Chen Zhiyi leaned close to Lin Ting's ear, his voice so soft that only she could hear, "Don't be afraid, everything will be alright. If anyone comes to ask you about this later, just remember not to respond. I'll handle it."
"I'm not worth it."
"You deserve it, you always have." After saying that, he fainted and fell into Lin Ting's arms.
Lin Ting held his face in her hands, crying out, "Wake up. Wake up." The pain in her heart felt like being crushed by a thorny wheel; the pain was like blood spurting out, inescapable, and made her wish she could just die.
Another wave of panic ensued, and everyone surrounded the three of them.
Soon, the ambulance arrived, and with everyone's help, the unconscious Chen Zhiyi was put into the ambulance. Lin Ting and Zhang Ke followed, and upon arrival at the hospital, they were taken directly to the emergency room.
The waiting time always seems particularly long.
Lin Ting sat on a chair outside the emergency room, staring blankly at the two tightly closed doors.
Time seems to drag on endlessly...
She didn't know what to do or what she should do. All language failed her; she couldn't express her feelings at that moment with any words. All she knew was fear, endless fear.
Like any ordinary woman, she curled up, in pain, out of control, her heart clenched tightly, unable to breathe, her mind blank except for constantly praying that the person inside was alright.
By this time, Zhang Ke had calmed down, sat down next to her, patted her shoulder and comforted her, "He'll be fine, don't worry!"
Lin Ting looked up at Zhang Ke, her eyes filled with confusion. How could she become calm so quickly, as if she had just lost her soul?
Zhang Ke understood the question in Lin Ting's eyes. "Those of us in this line of work encounter many, many tricky problems almost every day. Being able to adjust our mindset in time is a quality that must be cultivated. Otherwise, how can we face the bombardment of those cameras and the verbal attacks of keyboard warriors?"
Lin Ting nodded and didn't say anything more. As long as the emergency room door was closed and she couldn't hear the doctor say that she was alright, she couldn't stay calm and continued to pray with her head down.
"You must be the one he's always been thinking about!" Zhang Ke calmly revealed this secret.
Lin Ting suddenly looked up, her face filled with astonishment.
"Don't look at me with that surprised look. I recognized you the first time I saw you. I remember that early morning, Teacher Chen made a list for me to buy food and even booked a private room at a hot pot restaurant. I've been his assistant for so long, and he's never been picky about food, but that day he made me prepare a lot. He even specifically said to buy any red bean-flavored snacks I saw. I think you like red bean flavor, right? He saw you were sleepy and asked me to turn on the sleep-inducing aromatherapy. He was afraid you were cold, so he turned up the air conditioner and covered you with a blanket. He would steal glances at you every now and then, as if afraid you would suddenly run away. After the makeup was finished, I saw you were still sleeping, so I sat quietly on the sofa waiting for you. The way he looked at you was so tender it almost melted my heart. Really, I've never seen him look at any other girl with such affection, like he was looking at the most precious treasure in his life."
"Honestly, you're not as pretty as I imagined. I thought a girl he couldn't forget must be outstanding in every way, but I wasn't particularly impressed when I first saw you. Maybe you stand out in the general public, but you're really just average in his entertainment industry."
Lin Ting didn't say anything, just stared blankly ahead.
"Maybe it's impolite of me to say this, but I just feel sorry for him."
"Not worth it?" Lin Ting finally reacted, repeating the two words in a murmur.
"Yes, it's not worth it. With his current achievements, he can get a lot of good resources without putting in too much effort, but he still works very hard and hardly has any rest time. He's on set all year round. In order to pursue realistic effects, he does many action scenes himself, resulting in a lot of injuries, big and small, but none of them are as serious as this time. He's really risking his life for you."
"Several times I told him he needed to take a break and rest, that he couldn't keep wasting his health like this. He would always just smile and joke that if you don't work hard when you're young, you'll regret it when you're old, but I knew that wasn't the real reason. It wasn't until one day at the wrap party that he got drunk and I heard his inner voice. Such a handsome and successful person could cry so pitifully, abandoning all dignity and composure, wiping away snot and tears. He kept saying, 'Why can't you see me even though I'm standing so high now? Why don't you come to me? I'm financially independent now. I can buy you anything you want with my own money. I can support you in opening a clothing studio, or we can buy a big house with a yard and flower garden, everything we've ever imagined. But why won't you come back? I can't find you, I can't find you anywhere.' He kept repeating, 'I miss you so much, I miss you so much.'"
"Back then, I thought what a wonderful girl she must be to receive such deep and sincere love from him. But after meeting you, I realized that you are not so wonderful. You always avoid him and ignore his love. He has taken ninety-nine steps toward you, but you are not willing to take even one step closer to him. He is also a human being, and he will get tired too."
Lin Ting listened quietly, her face expressionless, but tears streamed uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes, like a tattered rag doll that had lost its soul.
"Actually, when he first started acting, he had no connections or resources. He relied entirely on running around to different production teams and submitting his resume. He auditioned repeatedly to get opportunities. Newcomers in this industry often face a lot of bullying. During his most difficult times, he would take out a photo of you two from his wallet and look at it. If you have the chance, you can check his wallet. Over the years, that photo has remained as good as new. Despite being taken out and put back repeatedly, it is still brand new. You are the most important pillar of support that has helped him persevere until now. He has been waiting for you to come back with unwavering determination, even though there has been no news. But there are people who can wait steadfastly even in such hopeless circumstances."
After a moment, Lin Ting finally reacted, burying her head in her arms and shaking it incessantly. Her heart ached as if a piece had been ripped out, and she kept saying, "I don't deserve him treating me like this, I don't deserve it, I don't deserve it."
Zhang Kejing sat to the side and said, "It's pointless for us to talk about whether it's worth it or not. If he thinks it's worth it, that's enough."
"Give him some response, so that his years of waiting have been worthwhile."
