Chapter 56 is my girlfriend, my love...
She didn't know how Gu Sui managed to be so restrained, even more so now than before, despite her being so proactive and the atmosphere being just right.
Seeing the little girl throwing a tantrum, Gu Sui felt both heartache and amusement. She stretched out her arms and pulled her into her embrace, pinching Shang Shu's cheek and gently coaxing her: "How could that be? You have no idea how much I miss you. You just need to rest now. Once you've recovered, we'll have plenty of time together."
"real?"
“Really,” Gu Sui replied patiently.
She wasn't in a hurry for this moment of sweetness, because she knew they had a long future ahead of them.
Shang Shu let out a soft hum, still wanting more, and had no choice but to give in. She leaned against the person and shifted, noticing that the two of them were crammed on the edge of the bed, wasting a large bed. So she sat up and touched the empty space next to her.
"Then come up here and lie down with me, okay?" She hadn't had a good rest for several days, and after all this, she did feel a bit tired.
"Okay." Gu Sui tucked a stray hair behind the other person's ear. "Would you like to change your clothes first? You'll be more comfortable this way."
"Mmm," Shang Shu responded softly, "Then I need you to help me change."
Now that things have quieted down, Shang Shu is genuinely feeling a bit weary, but at the same time, she's secretly plotting something, wanting to see just how much patience Gu Sui can muster.
Gu Sui glanced helplessly at the little girl, then replied indulgently, "Okay." But thinking of the pajamas she had dirtied in the second bedroom, she pursed her lips and added, "You might have to wear one of mine for now."
Shang Shu didn't bother to ask why, because she was eager to be enveloped in Gu Sui's aura, so she readily agreed.
Gu Sui found it quickly and returned from the dressing room in a short while. Shang Shu looked at it and saw that it was a black satin slip dress with a small cardigan of the same material on top.
Imagining Gu Sui wearing it, Shang Shu couldn't help but swallow. Her breathing became rapid, and her head felt a little dizzy. She was annoyed. She had originally wanted to mess with Gu Sui, but she had become the one who failed her.
"Come here." Gu Sui gestured to the person.
Shang Shu obediently moved closer to the bed. She watched as Gu Sui calmly peeled off her clothes layer by layer. She glanced down at her own figure with suspicion; it was perfect.
This made her even more depressed.
Only when she noticed that as the layers of clothing were removed, Gu Sui's hands moved faster and faster, and his breathing seemed to become heavier, did she continue to tease him with satisfaction.
"Why aren't you taking off your underwear?" Seeing that he was in a hurry to put on a nightgown, Shang Shu stood up, wrapped her arms around Gu Sui's waist, and breathed sweetly into his ear.
Gu Sui felt the whispers drifting into his ears, and gazed at the almost naked, alluring curves before him, his breathing becoming increasingly erratic.
"Ah Shu...stop fooling around..." She closed her eyes, removed the little girl's fidgeting hands from her waist, and forced herself to regain her composure.
"I'm not making a fuss, I'm listening to you, change your clothes." Shang Shu wrapped her arms around his waist again, her wandering hands becoming bolder. However, when she brushed against Gu Sui's lower abdomen, her fingertips touched a few slightly hard spots that felt different from the surrounding skin.
She hesitated for a moment, then listlessly withdrew her hand. She turned her back to Gu Sui and unhooked her bra. She then obediently changed into her nightgown in front of him. She didn't wear the outer garment. She gave Gu Sui a smile and led him back to bed.
Gu Sui stretched out her arm to cushion the back of Shang Shu's neck, then wrapped her arms around her and pulled her into her embrace. The little girl's body was soft, and holding her in her arms felt like holding a soft snow rabbit. She couldn't help but rub her chin against the little girl's hair.
"Gu Sui..." Shang Shu murmured in his arms, her voice tinged with sadness. She stroked Gu Sui's silky, fragrant hair, looking somewhat dejected.
The thought of Gu Sui's stomach made her heart ache in waves, but she dared not ask or listen. She had just told Gu Sui not to feel guilty, so she could not show any remorse or unease.
"I'm here." Gu Sui noticed that Shang Shu's mood was off, so he gently stroked the girl's smooth, fair arm and hugged her tighter.
"I... feel sorry for you." After a long while, Shang Shu finally uttered a few words, but she didn't continue. She was afraid that if she continued, she wouldn't be able to resist the self-blame.
"Don't think about it anymore, Shu. It's all in the past. Right now, I'm holding you tight, aren't I?" Gu Sui lowered his head and kissed Shang Shu's hair.
Shang Shu tilted her head back and looked at the other person with drooping eyes: "Then you promise that you won't hide anything from me anymore."
"Okay, I promise."
"It only counts if we pinky swear." Shang Shu hooked her little finger.
Gu Sui also reached out and hooked his hand with the little girl's delicate fingers: "Okay, pinky promise."
Shang Shu buried her head deeper into his arms. The past she had missed was glossed over by Gu Sui's casual "It's all in the past." So for the rest of her days, she only wanted to stay by Gu Sui's side and make up for it. As for the rest, it didn't seem to matter much anymore.
Her nightgown had long since rolled up, and Shang Shu gently pressed her leg against Gu Sui's leg. Even through the thin layer of pajama pants, it was still warm and comfortable, a feeling that brought her peace of mind. Her eyelids began to feel heavy.
"Gu Sui..." She yawned, her voice lazy and light as she called out his name, reluctant to fall asleep.
Gu Sui sensed the girl's drowsiness, pulled the blanket up for Shang Shu, and gently patted her back with his hand: "Go to sleep if you're sleepy."
Shang Shu smelled the fragrance so close to her and gave a faint "hmm". She nestled in Gu Sui's warm embrace, her hair falling over his collarbone. She felt his chest rise and fall slightly, and her breathing gradually became even.
Shang Shu was truly exhausted, and she slept soundly until noon the next day before showing any signs of waking up.
She sleepily reached out to touch the side beside her, only to find a soft blanket and a wisp of air.
Shang Shu sat up abruptly. Seeing that Gu Sui was nowhere to be seen, she began to panic. She threw off the covers, got out of bed, searched the room, and then rushed to the corridor.
"Gu Sui." Her voice trembled slightly as she frantically searched for someone and called out their name.
Hearing the noise, Gu Sui hurriedly came out of the study next door and saw the little girl in front of him standing barefoot in the corridor with her hair disheveled and looking aggrieved.
She strode forward, a slight smile playing on her lips as she gathered up the slipping strap of Shang Shu's nightgown, and asked softly, "Why aren't you wearing shoes?"
Shang Shu then realized that she was barefoot, but what concerned her even more was the thin-rimmed glasses that Gu Sui hadn't had time to take off.
It was still that navy blue pajama set, but paired with these glasses, it was even more outrageous than the other clothes. The collision of languidness and high intelligence created an indescribable, forbidden allure.
In an instant, all her anxiety vanished, her heart pounding. A little embarrassed, she pressed her forehead against the other person's neck: "I just got up, what are you doing..."
Gu Sui hesitated for a few seconds before realizing what the girl was talking about. She chuckled, took off her glasses, folded them up, and rubbed the girl's head: "I was just reading something in the study because I was afraid of disturbing you."
She woke up early and, considering Shang Shu's health, wanted to wake her up for breakfast. However, seeing that the little girl was sleeping soundly and probably hadn't rested well while she was sick, she couldn't bear to wake her.
After saying that, Gu Sui took Shang Shu's hand again and coaxed her as they walked, "Come on, let's put your shoes on."
Shang Shu glanced at the glasses that were being held in someone's other hand, and obediently let them lead her back to the room to put on her shoes.
Just as she looked up, she suddenly noticed a stack of glaring papers on the table not far away. Shang Shu's eyes began to redden again. She bit her lip, walked to the table, picked them up, and was about to tear them up.
Seeing this, Gu Sui wrapped his arms around the person from behind and gently took the item from their hand: "Be careful not to hurt your hand."
Shang Shu pouted, holding back her tears: "I don't want to."
She felt a pang of sorrow and never wanted to see that trust again in her life.
"Okay, no, I'll take it to the study and use the shredder later, okay?" Knowing that this thing had upset her, Gu Sui turned the little girl around to face him and gently stroked her earlobe.
Shang Shu finally gave up. She lowered her head and whispered, "I'm going to wash my face..."
Gu Sui responded softly, watching the person's back, and calmly tossed the paper into the drawer beside him.
After tidying up for a while, the two went downstairs to have lunch.
Shang Shu ate this meal with particular seriousness, not for herself, but because she was constantly watching Gu Sui.
"Can I eat this? Is this a bit oily? Will I feel uncomfortable if I eat that?" Every time Gu Sui picked up his cup to drink water, she would ask if he was full, if he was stuffed, and if he felt unwell.
Gu Sui could only chuckle helplessly and tell her that the housekeeper cooked according to the recipes and that everything was edible. She also said that she could actually eat normally and that not eating much meat was just a personal preference she had developed over time.
Seeing that Shang Shu was still worried, she joked, half-threateningly, "If you keep doing this, how am I supposed to eat properly?"
Shang Shu pouted, indicating her compromise: "I'm getting used to it, you have to give me some time..."
Gu Sui smiled as he looked at the little girl's adorable appearance and continued to put food into her bowl.
After dinner, the two snuggled on the sofa, just like back in Aicheng. Shang Shu reclined on the sofa watching TV, occasionally scrolling through her phone, while Gu Sui crossed his legs, holding her in his arms, enjoying this leisurely and happy time.
"What were you watching this morning?" Shang Shu turned down the TV volume and asked curiously.
Gu Sui squeezed the girl's palm and told her about meeting Annie in Luncheng and inviting her to co-write.
Upon hearing this, Shang Shu tilted her head back and smiled at the person, "Is our Dr. Gu still as sharp as ever, planning to return to his old profession?"
She knew Gu Sui's abilities, of course. If it weren't for his illness, Gu Sui would probably have already made a name for himself in academia. So when she heard this, she was naturally happy for Gu Sui.
Gu Sui raised an eyebrow and tapped the little girl's nose: "Why does it sound like someone is indirectly saying I'm old?"
Upon hearing this, Shang Shu became anxious and quickly stood up, straddling the person to argue, "No way, how could you be old? You're not old at all."
As if this topic reminded her of the seven years they had spent together, Shang Shu felt a little worried, but she wouldn't say it out loud. She simply cupped Gu Sui's handsome face and looked earnestly into his smiling eyes: "I... I'm just worried that you'll get tired."
Gu Sui smiled and brushed aside a few strands of hair that were blocking the girl's view: "Does President Shang have the right to worry about others?"
She knew all too well that Shang Shu was far more obsessed with her work than she was.
"Mmm..." Shang Shu lightly pecked his lips, avoiding the main point, "But you are not just anyone, you are my girlfriend, my lover."
