Chapter 81 I wonder who's so lucky...
On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, Shang Shu was going to Gu Qi's house for dinner. She had been nervous since early morning, or rather, she had been nervous for several days. So she ignored Gu Sui's arm as he tried to hold her back in his sleep and went to the dressing room to think about what to wear.
Almost an hour later, Gu Sui opened his eyes and found that the person was gone. He went to the dressing room and saw this scene: the little girl standing in front of the mirror, struggling with a pile of clothes.
"Ah, Gu Sui!" Shang Shu turned around and was startled by the person standing at the door. She clutched her chest and scolded, "Why didn't you call me?"
It's happened several times already, and she's been silent like a cat.
Gu Sui was still half asleep, his eyes half-closed as he leaned his head against the door frame, arms crossed, and said lazily with a smile, "Seeing you so focused, I didn't have the heart to disturb you."
Actually, she made noises while walking, but the little girl was probably too engrossed to hear them.
Looking at her like this, Shang Shu suddenly found her particularly alluring. Although she was still wearing that navy blue silk nightgown, Gu Sui's slender figure appeared even more striking with her tilted posture. Her long, black, silk-like hair was a little messy after a night's sleep, and the part of it that was leaning against the door frame was arched in a small curve, much like cat ears.
Shang Shu had no temper at all. She simply threw the clothes in her hand on the sofa, walked over, wrapped her arms around Gu Sui's waist, and gave him a kiss.
"I haven't washed my face yet." Gu Sui chuckled and turned her head away.
"I don't mind," Shang Shu said, even more pleased by her shy expression. She smiled sweetly and gave her another peck. "Go wash your face and come back to give me some advice. I'm really worried."
Gu Sui laughed so hard his shoulders trembled twice. He said "okay," then nuzzled his head against Shang Shu's neck, closed his eyes, and hugged her tightly for a while before finally leaving.
"So adorable." Shang Shu murmured as she watched Gu Sui's departing figure, her heart overflowing with satisfaction. After a few seconds of chuckling, she picked up her clothes and started fiddling with them in front of the mirror.
Gu Sui returned quickly, and when he reappeared, his eyes were much clearer, but he still looked a little tired.
"Why don't you go back to sleep?" Shang Shu cupped Gu Sui's face, feeling a little sorry for him. Gu Sui hadn't slept in for so many days, so maybe she should just keep to herself.
Gu Sui shook her head, politely declining Shang Shu's "politeness," and placed her hands on Shang Shu's hands, quoting Shang Shu's words with a smile: "You are really 'worried'."
Although she didn't think it was necessary to go to such lengths, she also knew that this was definitely different for Shang Shu.
"You're so annoying." Shang Shu smiled and gently touched her forehead with her head before letting go to get her clothes.
Seeing that the little girl had even brought out a little suit, Gu Sui couldn't help but chuckle: "A-Shu, it's just a meal at home, no need to be so formal."
"I know..." Shang Shu said, tossing the suit aside, but she was actually quite unsure.
The last time we met at Yijing Bay, it was a complete mess, a mess in every sense of the word. Shang Shu was so eager to salvage her image that she listed out all the most expensive, formal, elaborate, and generous things.
But after all that effort, she felt it was all for nothing. Someone like Sister Gu Qi had seen it all, and her own efforts probably wouldn't even catch her eye. Thinking about this, she felt a little scared and couldn't help but wonder, is this how everyone who's going to meet the parents goes before?
"What about this set?" Shang Shu asked listlessly after eight hundred rounds.
Gu Sui glanced at them and said that compared to the ones from before, they were just as good. So he stood up with a smile and personally helped her choose.
"Would you like to wear a skirt or pants?"
"A skirt, it'll look more innocent," Shang Shu said earnestly.
Upon hearing this, Gu Sui couldn't suppress the corners of her lips. She first carefully looked through the wardrobe with her eyes, then reached out and pulled out a set. The little girl's clothes were all very nice, and they had all been matched by the organizer and hung up by color, so it wasn't difficult to choose one.
Shang Shu glanced at the outfit in Gu Sui's hand. It consisted of a loose, thin, pearl-pink knitted cardigan with a round neck and three-quarter sleeves, and a matching umbrella skirt.
"Isn't this too casual?" This outfit is simple and elegant, and most importantly, it's very comfortable to look at, so it wasn't even on Shang Shu's radar.
"No, it won't happen." Gu Sui smiled and comforted her gently.
"Then I'll listen to you." Shang Shu pursed her lips and accepted, presumably Gu Sui wouldn't want to harm her.
Immediately afterwards, Shang Shu started tinkering with her hair and preparing her makeup. All this time seemed to leave her with very little time. Gu Sui, resting his chin on his hand, watched her with a smile, which made Shang Shu feel embarrassed. So, using her stomach as an excuse, he sent her downstairs to get something to eat.
Gu Sui obediently went upstairs, ate a few bites, and didn't rush to go upstairs to disturb them. Instead, she sat on the sofa downstairs and read something.
After an unknown amount of time, footsteps approached from the stairwell. Gu Sui looked up and saw Shang Shu gently holding the handrail, slowly walking down the stairs.
The little girl looked beautiful in pink, as delicate and tender as a white peach. The gentle sunlight warmly shone on her, making her half-up curly hair appear a lighter chestnut color. Gu Sui stared at her, momentarily stunned.
"Is it pretty?" Shang Shu walked up to Gu Sui, lightly touched her lips, and asked softly.
She had looked in the mirror before coming down and knew she looked good, but being stared at by Gu Sui the whole way still made her blush a little shyly.
Gu Sui put down what he was holding, got up from the sofa, and wrapped his arms around Shang Shu's slender waist: "Shu, you're beautiful."
“Hmm,” Shang Shu smiled with her eyes lowered, then looked up to meet Gu Sui’s somewhat burning gaze, “I wonder who is so lucky.”
He married such a beautiful wife.
"Yes, who is it?" Gu Sui glanced at Shang Shu's lips, which were not covered in lipstick, and then met her gaze again.
Having had experience before, the confirmation process will be much faster.
Gu Sui withdrew one hand, gently lifted Shang Shu's chin, and couldn't help but trace her lips and tongue.
Only when they were both panting heavily did Rou Rou finally part ways.
"Shouldn't you go?" Gu Sui said in a deep voice, even his light laughter sounded grainy.
Shang Shu knew she was joking, so she lightly punched her chest and laughed, "Go change your clothes."
Gu Sui didn't think about being particular and dressed as usual: a half-open khaki linen shirt paired with white wide-leg pants, and Shang Shu picked out a walnut-colored woven belt for her.
The two arrived at a time that was neither too early nor too late. As soon as they got out of the car, Shang Shu’s anxiety reached its peak. Gu Sui took her hand and touched a thin layer of sweat.
"Let's go." Gu Sui squeezed her hand, not saying anything more to comfort her, because she knew the most effective way was to quickly take Shang Shu in to see Gu Qi, and then everything would be fine.
Gu Sui was right. When Shang Shu was led inside, Gu Qi and Gu Xiangyi were watching TV on the sofa, dressed casually, in relaxed and comfortable clothes.
"Ah Shu is here." Hearing the noise, the two turned around to look. Gu Xiangyi deliberately didn't turn off the TV, but turned down the volume to leave a little background noise, afraid that it would be too quiet and make Shang Shu feel awkward.
"Sister Gu Qi, Xiang Yi, Happy New Year." Shang Shu stood dignifiedly and greeted the two of them crisply.
"Happy New Year," Gu Qi said with a smile, inviting the two of them in. "Come on in, don't be shy, come and sit down."
The four sat down on the sofa, and Gu Qi took out a red envelope that he had prepared in advance and handed it to Shang Shu: "Shu, this is for you."
"Sister Gu Qi, I..." Shang Shu was extremely embarrassed. Before she even touched the sofa, she stood up and refused again. They were, after all, peers, and she was just an outsider.
Gu Qi smiled and pulled her to sit down, stuffing the money into her hands: "Today is the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, a day to welcome the God of Wealth. How can we not accept it?"
Shang Shu was truly flattered and secretly looked to Gu Sui for help. Gu Sui put his arm around her waist and smiled gently, "Take it, I want to give one to Xiangyi too."
“Yes, Sister Shang Shu, even if you don’t accept it, I won’t be polite to my aunt.” Gu Xiangyi smiled and reached out to Gu Sui.
Shang Shu smiled and accepted the gift with slightly reddened eyes. She then watched Gu Sui hand over Gu Xiangyi's share. It turned out that she had known all along.
Although it was just a custom, Shang Shu was still touched. When she spent the New Year at the Lin family's house before, she would deliberately avoid this occasion so as not to make things difficult for the Lin family's relatives. Now, Gu Qi and Gu Xiangyi treated her like family and even prepared these things for her. She knew that this was all because of Gu Sui's kindness to her.
The atmosphere had already become lively. Gu Qi pulled Shang Shu aside to exchange pleasantries, while Gu Sui and Gu Xiangyi chatted casually on the side, glancing at their phones from time to time.
"I heard from Asui that you went to the Lin family for the New Year a couple of days ago. I haven't visited them in a long time. Are they all doing well?" Gu Qi asked the housekeeper as she put down the fresh tea that had been brought over, gesturing for Shang Shu to drink. She knew that the Lin family had always treated Shang Shu like their own daughter.
"Everything is fine," Shang Shu said with a smile, taking a sip of her tea. "Aunt Hui is in good health, and Sister Lin Cui and the others are all doing well. Sister Lin Can even brought her girlfriend back this year."
After speaking, she glanced at Gu Xiangyi out of the corner of her eye. Seeing that Gu Xiangyi was indeed listening intently when the Lin family was mentioned, Shang Shu smiled inwardly, wondering how much Gu Qi knew about them.
Gu Qi swished his teacup and laughed: "I heard from A-Cui before that she was in a relationship and was always going to Beicheng. I guess it's been almost a year. Can-Can is even more taciturn than A-Sui. What will Aunt Hui's reaction be when she suddenly brings her back this time?"
Shang Shu glanced at the taciturn man, smiled, and replied, "He seems quite satisfied. Later, when we were chatting, he even praised her a couple of times. Aunt Hui didn't seem to care much about anything else, saying that it was fine as long as Sister Lin Can liked it."
Gu Qi glanced at the arm on Shang Shu's lower back. Seeing Gu Sui chatting with Gu Xiangyi, he didn't forget to reach out and put his arm around the little girl. He nodded and teased, "Well, then he must also be interested in our A-Sui."
While she may be a bit of a joker, she genuinely has confidence in her younger sister.
Upon hearing this, Shang Shu's ears turned red instantly. When this topic came up earlier, she had actually remembered Ke Ya Hui asking her to bring people back. She was already a little shy, and she never expected Gu Qi to bring it up directly.
"Sister." Gu Sui patted Shang Shu's lower back twice and called out to Gu Qi with a smile.
"Alright, if I tease you any more, she'll get mad at me," Gu Qi patted Shang Shu's hand and whispered a scolding to his protective younger sister, "From now on, if Asui bullies you, just tell me, and I'll talk to her for you."
Hearing this, Shang Shu blushed even more, turning her head to look at Gu Sui, who was smiling, and softly replied, "Okay."
