Chapter 87. Stop scaring me like that.
Gujia Medical Center is very efficient; the test results came out in less than half an hour.
Shang Shu's heart clenched, but she immediately sniffed and stood up, afraid of being a second too late.
"According to the blood test results, the young lady's high fever is caused by a bacterial infection," the doctor said, holding the report.
Bacterial infection?
Shang Shu was both surprised and annoyed. Gu Sui had been coughing a bit after getting caught in the rain that day, but they thought it was just a cold.
“Because the second young lady has a rather special constitution,” the doctor paused, exchanged a glance with Gu Qi, “her body is inherently sensitive to infection, and the intervention was somewhat delayed, leading to a continuous overreaction of her immune system. We are doing our best to control it, administering medication, fluids, and monitoring her, but the key is still to see how she reacts on her own.”
"Then, then her stomach..." Shang Shu choked on her tears, and could barely finish her sentence.
The doctor knew exactly what she was worried about, so he quickly replied, "The acute infection and the recurrence are not closely related. The main risk now is the potential complications that may arise later. If organ function is damaged, it will be quite troublesome."
These few words left Shang Shu feeling uneasy, her nerves constantly being stretched. She staggered slightly, and Lin Lang quickly reached out to support her.
The door behind opened, and Gu Sui lay on the bed with her eyes closed and her brows furrowed, as if she was in great pain. The nurse was about to push her to the ward, and Shang Shu followed at the foot of the bed. Afraid of getting in the way, she could only hold her tightly with her eyes.
Upon arriving at the ward, the nurse moved Gu Sui to a larger and more comfortable bed. Shang Shu heard Gu Sui groan as she was moved, knowing that she must be in a lot of pain. She bit her lower lip tightly, her heart breaking.
The Gu family sent someone to inquire about Gu Sui's situation. Gu Qi went out to deal with it, while Lin Lang and Gu Xiangyi stood beside Shang Shu.
After the doctors and nurses left, Shang Shu wiped away her tears in front of the wall, took a few deep breaths, and then walked to Gu Sui's bedside. She knew that if Gu Sui saw her like this, he would be heartbroken, and she didn't want him to worry.
Holding Gu Sui's hand that wasn't receiving an IV drip, and listening to her heavy, disordered breathing, Shang Shu could sense that she wanted to open her eyes, but couldn't.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here with you. If you feel unwell, just go to sleep." Shang Shu gently stroked the back of her hand and spoke softly, because if she spoke any louder, she was afraid she wouldn't be able to control her trembling voice.
Gu Sui probably heard it, his eyes moved slowly, then he tilted his head to the side where Shang Shu was and fell into a deep sleep.
Gu Xiangyi came over and put her arm around Shang Shu's shoulder: "Sister Shang Shu, the doctor here knows my aunt's health best, she'll definitely be fine."
“Yes, it’s fine as long as it has nothing to do with that. Don’t worry too much, we’re all here for you,” Lin Lang added, offering words of comfort.
"Mmm," Shang Shu responded softly, but her gaze never left Gu Sui.
Bacterial infections cause a person's body temperature to fluctuate repeatedly.
At night, Gu Sui's fever spiked to 40°C. Seeing her shivering and shaking all over, Shang Shu instinctively wanted to rub her, but the nurse stopped her, saying that it could interfere with blood circulation and body temperature regulation, increasing the burden on the body, and that she should let it pass on its own.
Listening to the doctors and nurses instructing her to prepare a ventilator in advance and to use it immediately if she had difficulty breathing, Shang Shu stood helplessly to the side, feeling that she had almost run out of tears.
Gu Sui had a fever for three whole days. She woke up a few times when the fever subsided, but she was always drowsy and not very clear-headed. She couldn't eat anything, and then the fever would return.
Shang Shu stayed by his side without leaving for a moment. Even though the lounge was right next door, in the same suite, separated only by a wall, she still refused to go. When she couldn't hold on any longer, she would just hold Gu Sui's hand and lie down by the bed for a while.
Only by seeing Gu Sui with her own eyes and touching him with her own hands could she feel at ease.
"A-Shu, you have to listen to me, go rest for a while, eat something, otherwise you won't be able to hold on until A-Sui gets better." Gu Qi frowned, his tone more serious than he had ever been towards Shang Shu.
These past few days, she, Gu Xiangyi, and Lin Lang have taken turns trying to persuade her, but Shang Shu has refused. If she hadn't almost fainted in the bathroom today, she wouldn't have wanted to talk to her like this.
"Sister," Shang Shu swallowed, her voice already a little hoarse, "just one more day, just one more day, I can do it."
Today is the third day. She heard the doctor say that the third day is the critical period, and the condition may turn out well or it may continue to worsen. She has to stay with her.
“Sigh,” Gu Qi looked at her, but couldn’t bring himself to do it. “But you have to eat. I’ll have them send some over, and you can eat here.”
"Okay." Shang Shu rubbed Gu Sui's fingers and finally agreed.
Shang Shu thought that Gu Sui probably felt sorry for her because her body temperature finally dropped and stabilized that day.
The doctor said not to rush to wake her up. After having a fever for so many days, her strength was already close to its limit. Let her wake up slowly, there's no rush.
Shang Shu was relieved. She was also feeling weak. In fact, she was not sure if she would faint at any moment. Fortunately, everything was fine, so she stopped being stubborn and lay down on the bed in the rest room to sleep.
Not long after Shang Shu went to rest, Gu Sui woke up, as if she had just finished a very tiring dream. In the dream, she heard Shang Shu crying and could feel her touch, but she was like a ghost pressing on her sleep and couldn't wake up no matter what she did.
Her eyelids were still so heavy she could barely lift them. It took Gu Sui a long time to open her eyes a crack. The light in the ward rushed in through the crack, and she frowned, which startled Gu Qi, who was replying to work messages beside her.
"Ah Sui, are you awake?" Gu Qi quickly put away his phone, got up, leaned over the edge of the bed to look, and then asked carefully.
Gu Sui paused for another ten seconds before fully opening her eyes. She blinked once, and Gu Qi's figure was a little blurry. She blinked again, and then it became clearer. She moved her head slightly.
Gu Qi hurriedly called the doctor back, but couldn't bear to wake Shang Shu immediately. Shang Shu was too tired. When Gu Qi went to see her earlier, she hadn't even had time to put one leg on the bed before falling asleep on the very edge of the bed.
Can you hear me clearly?
"Can you move your hand a little?"
...
After completing a series of tests, the doctor drew blood from Gu Sui again: "His consciousness has recovered well. If we recheck the infection indicators to confirm that there are no new complications and his body temperature remains stable, then there shouldn't be any major problems."
"Hmm." Gu Qi finally breathed a sigh of relief.
With his fever not yet fully subsided and still feeling weak after waking up, Gu Sui closed his eyes again, listening to the doctor and nurses explain many things while trying to recover.
About half an hour later, Gu Sui's spirits had recovered somewhat. Remembering that he hadn't seen Shang Shu since waking up, his first words were to Gu Qi: "Shu..."
My mouth was so dry it was hard to swallow, my throat was sore and astringent, and my voice, which I hadn't spoken in a long time, was hoarse and unpleasant.
Gu Qi quickly handed over some warm water, not meeting Gu Sui's eyes: "Drink slowly. A-Shu has been watching over you for three days. I just told her to go rest next door."
I've had a fever for three days.
Although Gu Sui was delirious with fever, she could still discern Gu Qi's expression. She knew that if there hadn't been no other way, Shang Shu wouldn't have been absent, and Gu Qi wouldn't have failed to call for her.
Having mustered some strength, she took a couple of breaths and struggled to remove the needles: "I'll go check on her."
"Hey," Gu Qi almost dropped the water glass in his hand when he saw her movement, and quickly freed his hand to hold her down, "What are you looking at? Don't move around."
After placing the water glass steadily on the bedside table and checking the needle on Gu Sui's hand again, Gu Qi sighed and said, "Take it easy for now, let her sleep a little longer. You two..."
None of them are easy to deal with.
Gu Sui finally gave up, leaning back and moving her lips slightly: "As for Mom and Dad..."
Gu Qi glanced at her. She had just woken up, but her mind was quite clear, and she still had a lot on her mind.
"Don't worry, I've talked to them. They're just being tough on me verbally, they won't really do anything to A-Shu," she added when she saw Gu Sui hesitate. "I didn't mention what happened before."
She was simply laying out all the pros and cons, advising them to peacefully enjoy their old age.
In the next room, Shang Shu's alarm clock rang. She hadn't planned to sleep for too long and expected that Gu Qi wouldn't want to wake her.
Exhausted, she rubbed the back of her neck and turned it around. Then she got out of bed and went to the door. As soon as she opened the door a crack, she heard Gu Qi speaking. Shang Shu was overjoyed.
"Gu Sui!" Seeing Gu Sui sitting up, she forgot everything else and ran to the bedside.
Gu Qi tactfully gave up his seat and left the ward, leaving the two of them alone.
He didn't say a word.
Shang Shu stroked Gu Sui's hand repeatedly, swallowing hard, her lips involuntarily tucking in and out, forming two small curves.
Gu Sui tightened his grip, staring intently at her face, his brows slowly furrowing, becoming more and more furrowed.
The little girl's voice when she called her was hoarse. Her beautiful peach blossom eyes were dim, her eye circles and eyes were red, and her eyes were also very dark. Her usually beautiful curly hair was also messy, with a few strands falling around her temples and a few strands sticking out unevenly from behind her ears.
"Ah Shu, don't cry." Knowing he had worried and frightened her, he wanted to touch her face, but his hand, which wasn't receiving an IV, was being held tightly.
Shang Shu lowered her eyes, blew out a breath, turned Gu Sui's hand over, patted her palm very lightly, and then asked her in a voice slightly louder than her breath, "Please don't scare me like that anymore, okay?"
Gu Sui felt a pang of sadness in his heart, touched her fingertips, and said softly, "It won't happen again."
Not wanting to expend too much energy on her, Shang Shu didn't let her say too much, only occasionally speaking herself.
"Once we get back, we'll have our family doctor come for a check-up every week."
"From now on, we'll take walks in the garden every day."
"You have to take those supplements with me too."
Gu Sui nodded in agreement.
Later, the nurse brought some clear soup. After fasting for so long, it was not advisable to eat anything rashly. Gu Sui's stomach needed to be treated with more care, so she didn't even dare to try liquid food first.
Shang Shu held the bowl, scooped a small spoonful of soup, blew on it to cool it down, and brought it to Gu Sui's lips: "Let's try a small sip first, and if it doesn't feel good, we won't drink it."
She had just tasted it; it wasn't oily or salty, and it was quite bland.
"How is it?" she asked impatiently.
Gu Sui chuckled, speechless: "Just swallowed."
Shang Shu also found herself a little amused, so she lowered her head and stirred the bowl with a spoon.
