Chapter 30 The Fall of Shen

The girl repeatedly emphasized that the bracelet wasn't expensive, and Ye Xinning could tell that she genuinely wanted to buy it for herself.

"May I ask why you're so young, yet you're selling things here?"

“My mother is sick, and I need to raise money for her treatment.”

Human life is full of different aspects. Happiness is the same for everyone, but misfortune is unique to each individual.

Get ill?

Ye Xinning looked at the bracelets the little girl was holding; they were cheap street vendor items, averaging less than a hundred yuan each. It was practically possible to cure her illness with these things.

"Can I ask what illness your mother has?" Ye Xinning asked, holding the girl's small hand.

"leukemia."

Ye Xinning had a feeling that the illness was serious, but she was still stunned when she heard that it was leukemia.

"And what about your father?"

"There."

The girl pointed to a noodle shop. Ye Xinning looked in that direction and saw a man with a buzz cut busy serving customers.

Despite being drenched in sweat, they didn't stop moving for a moment.

Ye Xinning was moved; everything in front of her indicated that this girl's family was nothing out of the ordinary.

She took out the paper and pen she always carried with her.

I quickly wrote down an address and phone number on it.

"Give this note to your dad and tell him to call this number and go find this person. This person should be able to help you."

The little girl took the note, seemingly understanding but not quite. Ye Xinning gently patted her head and then took out the only cash she had from her pocket.

"This is a gift from your sister. Take it and buy something you like."

"Sister, my bracelet isn't worth that much money." The little girl was frightened and refused to accept the money.

Ye Xinning forcefully shoved it into her hand.

"See you next time," she said, putting on her mask and continuing to walk forward.

"Sister, you haven't taken the bracelet yet."

Ye Xinning simply waved her hand, "Consider it a gift from your older sister. You'll look even better in it."

The little girl stood there, watching her retreating figure.

At that moment, none of them could have imagined that such a chance encounter would have an impact on all of their lives in the future.

After leaving the little girl's sight, Ye Xinning took out her phone and opened a chat app.

Find the name at the very bottom of the contact list.

Open the dialog box; the last conversation was last month.

Her hands landed on the keyboard, and she slowly typed out a sentence.

—Could you please do me a favor?

After sending the message, she waited a while and then heard the reply sound.

It's rare to hear you speak to me.

—That's an exaggeration. I remember the last time I asked you for help was just last month.

—Last month? I think it was a long time ago.

—Okay, enough of this small talk. I have a… friend who's run into some trouble and might need your charity's help. I've given you your contact information; they should be able to reach you soon.

—Friends? Friends from the North City? ???

After a series of question marks, Ye Xinning smiled, vaguely guessing what kind of expression he had on the other end.

—Thank you for your hard work. I'll prepare a nice birthday present for you next month.

...

Ye Xinning returned to the hotel, took a shower, and picked up her phone again, but still received no message from Mr. Li.

She was somewhat frustrated and told Xiao Chen about it. Xiao Chen's reply was simple: he told her to handle it as she saw fit.

What does "we'll see" mean? Does it mean giving up on cooperating with Mr. Li, or something else?

For the first time, Ye Xinning felt that Xiao Chen's thoughts were so difficult to fathom.

Just as she was pondering this, the phone rang.

She picked it up and glanced at it.

Caller ID: Chen Lin.

Ye Xinning was somewhat disappointed that it wasn't Mr. Li. Coupled with not being able to guess the purpose of Shen Lin's sudden call, she stood there stunned for a long time until the call was about to automatically disconnect before answering.

"Hello."

On the other end, Shen Lin's voice was deep, and his first words were to question why she took so long to answer the phone.

What were you doing just now?

"Nothing, did you call me for something?"

"Open the door."

"What?"

"Ye Xinning, I said, open the door. Are you hard of hearing?"

Ye Xinning, "..."

A minute later, Ye Xinning looked at Shen Lin standing at the door and still couldn't suppress her surprise.

What are you doing here?

Shen Lin gave her a look, then stepped into Ye Xinning's room.

By the time Ye Xinning realized what was happening, he had already gone inside.

She quickly followed, "Did you come to Beicheng for work?"

Shen Lin sat down on the sofa, placed his hands on it, raised his dark eyes, and looked down at her face, his tone as indifferent as could be.

"Otherwise what?"

Ye Xinning, "..."

What else could it be? His question wasn't because he thought she believed he came because of her, was it?

Ye Xinning wasn't narcissistic to that extent. The reason she asked that question was simply because she was surprised that he would appear at her hotel entrance.

What brings you here?

"Aunt Xi asked me to bring this to you."

After Shen Lin finished speaking, he casually tossed a bag over.

Ye Xinning opened it and saw some information about hand warmers used during menstruation and some items to relieve menstrual cramps.

She suffers excruciating pain during her periods, sometimes to the point of fainting.

Not long after she married Shen Lin, Xi Yuan noticed this and would always remember her menstrual cycle and prepare many things for her in advance.
