Chapter 49 Explanation

Shen Ting turned to the side, carefully observing Shen Lin's expression. His older brother hadn't glanced at him once since he came in, so was it a bit redundant for him to keep talking to him?

After pondering for a moment, Shen Ting asked, "Has your older brother eaten?"

"No."

Shen Ting, “…”

"How about... I take my share, big brother?"

"good."

Shen Ting, “…”

Hearing Shen Lin's blunt remark, Shen Ting was immediately bewildered.

He was just asking casually, so why did his older brother, who never eats noodles, agree so readily?

Before Shen Ting could react, Shen Lin had already sat down, picked up the bowl in front of him, and started eating by himself.

Shen Ting had no choice but to get up. "Then sister-in-law and brother-in-law can eat together. I've already eaten, so I'll go back to my bedroom first."

After Shen Ting left, only Ye Xinning and Shen Lin remained in the living room.

Ye Xinning didn't say a word since Shen Lin entered. She remained calm throughout, a calmness that even seemed somewhat strange.

Shen Lin ate his noodles while watching her.

The two seemed to be competing to see who had more patience.

Shen Lin ate the noodles in his bowl attentively. The noodles tasted better than he expected. This was the first time he had tasted her cooking since they got married.

Thinking of Shen Ting sitting here just now, he felt a little displeased. That's why she would always cook for Shen Ting, but he never did.

In her heart, he was not as good as Chen Ting?

Thinking this, Shen Lin raised his head again, staring at her intently without blinking.

His gaze was direct and intense, impossible for Ye Xinning to ignore.

She raised her head, her gaze calm and unwavering. "What do you want to say?"

When did you get back?

"just."

"Where did you go?"

She remained silent, feeling she had no obligation to answer the question.

Her silence left Shen Lin helpless. Knowing that she was upset about what happened when she bought clothes, he patiently continued to talk to her.

"I can explain about the clothes."

Ye Xinning lifted the bowl, took a sip of soup, and put it down.

She stood up, then looked down at him sitting at the dining table. "There's no need."

As she spoke, she picked up her bowl and walked toward the kitchen, completely ignoring Shen Lin sitting at the dining table.

She didn't think he could explain anything, so why waste their time?

Back in the kitchen, Ye Xinning tidied up the mess she had made and was about to leave when she heard the kitchen door open behind her. She turned around and saw Shen Lin walking towards her with a sullen face.

She had a bad feeling and wanted to get away from him, but Shen Lin grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms.

The two were very close, so close that she could even hear his steady and powerful heartbeat.

Ye Xinning tried her best to calm herself down and avoid any major emotional fluctuations.

"Chen Lin, let go of me."

“I said I can explain.”

"I already said I don't want to hear it. What you and Jiang An do is your business, there's no need for you to explain anything to me."

Shen Lin was so angry at her nonchalant attitude that his chest flared with rage.

“You were clearly bothered by it when we were at the mall.” If she hadn’t been bothered, she wouldn’t have left on the spot.

Ye Xinning lowered her eyes, pursed her lips, and organized her thoughts before speaking.

"I'm just tired. Can't I just walk if I'm tired?"

Shen Lin's gaze was deep as he stared at her face, not missing a single expression.

“I have never taken Jiang An to any shopping mall. The sales assistants only know me because Wen Zhu went there to buy clothes for Jiang An.”

"Wenzhu is your assistant. What's the essential difference between her going with you?"

Shen Lin's jaw tightened, and his eyes narrowed; clearly, on this issue, he held a different opinion from the bottom of his heart.

Ye Xinning chuckled softly, with a hint of sarcasm, "See, I told you it wasn't necessary. Shen Lin, your explanation is no different from saying nothing at all to me."

She had no intention of arguing with him any longer, and said calmly, "Let go of me."

Shen Lin tightened his grip, pinning her against the cabinet behind him. "If you don't like it, I won't take you to her house next time."

Ye Xinning was helpless, wondering why Shen Lin kept going around this topic. Did he really not know the crux of their problem?

She didn't believe it.

Judging from his demeanor tonight, it was clear that if she didn't go along with what he was saying, it wouldn't end there.

"Mm." She nodded, her attitude appearing exceptionally gentle.

Seeing that she was no longer baring her thorns at him, Shen Lin felt a little relieved and assumed that she really didn't care anymore.

His hand rested on her waist, moving intermittently, which made Ye Xinning feel somewhat uneasy.

She held his hand. "I'm tired. I want to go back to the bedroom."

Shen Lin asked, "When did you learn to cook?"

Ye Xinning's answer was somewhat perfunctory: "Back when I was abroad."

"During those years you were abroad, did you take care of yourself all by yourself? Did you have no one else with you?"

Ye Xinning felt he was asking too many questions and was getting annoyed. "No, I'm really tired, Chen Lin. Can you let go of me? I need to go upstairs."

This time, Shen Lin readily let go of her.

Once free, Ye Xinning headed upstairs. Shen Lin stood there, watching her retreating figure, motionless for a long time.

It was one person; there was no one else.

...

The next morning, Ye Xinning had just arrived at the firm when she saw a news article.

— Huo Yanzhi, president of the Huo Group, and Mu Yinjing, the daughter of the Mu family, canceled their wedding.

Ye Xinning glanced at a few lines of text, but found it uninteresting, so she closed the webpage.

She couldn't fathom Huo Yanzhi's thoughts even if she knew ten times over. She could only draw some general conclusions from certain events. As for the matter with Mu Yinjing, Huo Yanzhi might have... never really thought about marrying Mu Yinjing.

From the day he agreed to marry Mu Yinjing, he was probably already planning how to cancel the wedding openly and legitimately.

Sometimes she felt sorry for Mu Yinjing, who actually fell in love with Huo Yanzhi, a man with such a deep mind, but little did she know that he had been scheming from beginning to end.

Putting aside her worries, Ye Xinning focused all her attention on her work.

Meanwhile, in the Mu family's living room, Mu Yinjing slammed a tablet on the table onto the floor. On the screen was Huo Yanzhi's recent statement announcing the annulment of their engagement.

Seeing her beloved daughter so angry, Madam Mu quickly tried to comfort her.

"Yin Jing, my darling daughter, don't be angry."

Mu Yinjing's voice choked even more, "Mom, he wants to break off the engagement with me, just because of that bitch Ye Xinning, he's so determined not to want me anymore."

"He has no taste. Your mom and dad will find you someone a million times better, okay?"

"Not good!" Mu Yinjing shouted as soon as Madam Mu finished speaking.
