Chapter 3 It's Not What I Thought

"There's a power outage?"

Chen Xu was a little surprised. As far as he could remember, there had been no power outage in the two years since they moved here.

It seems that it started in the year of the environmental protection inspection, and many factories with high pollution and high energy consumption were closed down. Since then, there has been no power restriction.

As he was thinking, he went downstairs and prepared to go to the cake shop on the corner to buy some bread and milk.

If he had a choice, he would prefer to have something hot for breakfast. Unfortunately, the original steamed bun shop on the street moved away a few months ago because the rent increased too much.

As soon as he stepped onto the street, he felt something was wrong.

Where are the people?

There was no one on the entire street.

It's rush hour now. There are more than a dozen buildings on this street, and there are at least a few hundred people living there. Usually at this time, there are many people rushing to work.

wrong!

Chen Xu's head exploded and he thought of a possibility.

This can't be a dream.

Thinking of this, the briefcase in his hand fell to the ground with a snap.

He looked at the empty street in front of him, too shocked to speak.

After a while, he murmured, "I should have thought of it earlier."

It is indeed 100% virtual reality.

There were no gorgeous lighting effects, no heart-shaking scenes. But everything was no different from reality. After he woke up, he had no idea that he was in a dream.

He pinched the back of his hand lightly and felt the slight pain clearly.

"Even the pain sensation is completely simulated. Is this really a dream?"

His heart began to waver.

In a state of confusion, he grabbed the briefcase on the ground and ran forward.

On the empty street, you can see cell phones, wallets and keys on the ground from time to time. He ignored them and ran to the end of the street, turned around, and there was a main road.

He stopped, stood at the intersection, and looked at the road ahead.

The road was full of various vehicles. Most of the shops on both sides of the road were open, and everything seemed to be the same as usual.

The only difference is that there is no one, not a single person.

He walked to the bus stop step by step. At this time on normal days, the place would have been crowded with people waiting to take the bus. Now, there was only a pile of mobile phones, wallets, keys and various bags on the ground.

“People disappeared, but things remained?”

When he saw the things on the ground, his scalp tightened a little, and he guessed the setting of the dream. At a certain moment, perhaps the moment he woke up, the people here disappeared at the same time, but the things on their bodies remained in place.

It's like pressing the pause button and then clearing the people out.

wrong.

He looked at the vehicles parked on the road, or rather the stop button.

Otherwise, these vehicles that were originally moving would have crashed into each other due to inertia after the drivers disappeared.

"No matter what, let's go to the company first."

He stood there and watched for a while, then decided it would be more reassuring to rush to the company.

But how to get there? He looked at the bus parked more than ten meters away and felt a little puzzled. Should he walk there? It would take more than an hour to walk seven or eight stops.

He walked to the nearest car and looked through the window. Sure enough, the key was still there.

………………

Chen Xu drove a black Volkswagen slowly towards the company.

There were too many vehicles on the road, especially at the intersection with traffic lights, where a bunch of cars would often completely block the road. In this case, he could only drive on the sidewalk.

He got his driver's license during his senior year in college, but he seldom drove and his driving skills were not very good. When he drove onto the sidewalk, the car body was scratched several times and the rear door was even deformed.

However, at this time, he could no longer care about this, and all his attention was focused on observing the situation around him.

When the car stopped in front of the company building, he was certain that this was indeed his dream.

Although this is not the CBD, there are several office buildings nearby, and there is a commercial street next door with several large shopping malls. There is a huge flow of people every day, especially during the morning rush hour.

Now, the whole road was quiet, there was no one, and apart from the engine sound of the car he was driving, no other sound could be heard.

The silence made him feel uneasy.

Chen Xu let go of the steering wheel, rubbed his face vigorously, and sighed, "This is different from what I thought."

When entering a dream, there should at least be a ritual process.

At least, he needs to be mentally prepared.

I never expected that this system did not follow the routine at all. As soon as I opened my eyes, I went straight into a dream.

This was too real, so real that he couldn't tell whether this was a dream or reality.

To be honest, when he drove all the way here and saw the empty cars parked on the road, the empty roads, and the empty shops on both sides, he felt really scared. This was completely different from what he had imagined.

"Forget it, now that I'm here, let's think about how to spend these 180 days." Chen Xu patted his face and threw away these messy thoughts. He opened his briefcase, took out a pen and paper, leaned over the steering wheel, and started writing.

At this time, if he doesn't find something to do, he won't be able to bear it.

He concentrated and organized his thoughts.

First of all, it is water and food. The most important thing is the issue of eating and drinking water.

He wrote these two words in the first line.

There is no need to worry about water. There are plenty of bottled mineral water in every supermarket. He can't use up all the water in this city in his lifetime.

Moreover, the shelf life of bottled mineral water is generally one year, so there is no need to worry about it going bad.

The problem is food. Rice and noodles are easy to store for a long time, but meat and vegetables can't be kept for long, especially meat. In this kind of weather, it will go bad in a day or two.

"Yes, we need to collect enough meat and preserve it first, otherwise we will have to eat canned food every day."

As a carnivore, Chen Xu could not tolerate a day without meat, so he wrote the words meat and vegetables on the second line and started to take action.

If you want to find a lot of fresh meat, you usually go to meat and vegetable markets and big supermarkets. But Chen Xu went to the best restaurant near the company.

In his opinion, if he wanted to find a base, the best place was neither a luxury villa nor a big supermarket, but a restaurant. It would be best if it was a higher-end restaurant, where there were ready-made ingredients and a full range of them, so he didn't have to bother going to the market to collect them.

More importantly, larger restaurants have freezers, which are perfect for storing meat.

Another point is that the surrounding facilities are complete, with several large supermarkets where all daily necessities can be found.

This place is perfect as a base camp.
