Your deskmate wishes you a happy birthday.

Your deskmate wishes you a happy birthday.

Xu Chuwan glanced at the calendar; today was October 9th—her birthday.

When Xu Chuwan's mother was about to leave for school in the morning, she said to her apologetically, "Chuanwan, I have some things to do at the company tonight, so I'll be off work a little late. Here's a hundred yuan. See what you want to eat and go out with your classmates, okay?"

Xu Chuwan listened to her parents and nodded, saying, "It's okay, Mom."

Xu Chuwan has always been obedient since childhood, and has never caused Jiang Yan and Xu Cheng much worry.

Jiang Yan took out a hundred-yuan bill from her wallet and handed it to Xu Chuwan. Seeing that Xu Chuwan didn't take it, she said to her, "Chuanwan, you can take it."

Xu Chuwan then took the money and said to Jiang Yan, "Thank you, Mom."

No one celebrates her birthday with her every year, and Xu Chuwan has gradually gotten used to it.

Jiang Yan smiled and said, "Go to school now."

Xu Chuwan said to Jiang Yan, "Goodbye, Mom."

Jiang Yan instructed Xu Chuwan, "Study hard at school, listen to your teachers, and pay attention in class."

Xu Chuwan hummed in agreement and went downstairs. She put on her headphones, listened to music, and waited for the bus at the bus stop.

When Xu Chuwan boarded the bus, Zhang Jiye was also on the bus. He saw Xu Chuwan and said to her, "Xu Chuwan!"

Xu Chuwan saw Zhang Jiye, took off her headphones, and Zhang Jiye said to her, "Come sit next to me."

Xu Chuwan walked to the seat next to him, sat down, and couldn't help but ask Zhang Jiye, "Why haven't I seen you on the bus before?"

Zhang Jiye said, "My bicycle wheel was punctured by the neighbor's kid with a needle yesterday, so I came to take the bus."

"..."

Well, you're really pitiful.

Something occurred to Zhang Jiye, and he said to Xu Chuwan, "You take the bus every day?"

Xu Chuwan nodded.

Xu Chuwan was about to put her headphones back on and listen to music when Zhang Jiye leaned over and asked, "What are you listening to? It's not English listening practice, is it? Why are you so 'curious'?"

"..."

Xu Chuwan said speechlessly, "I'm not listening to my hearing, I'm listening to music."

Zhang Jiye said "Oh," and continued, "Whose songs are you listening to?"

Xu Chuwan said, "JJ Lin."

Zhang Jiye said with a grin, "What a coincidence! I also listen to JJ Lin's songs. Shall we listen together?"

Xu Chuwan handed him the other half of the earphone, and Zhang Jiye said, "Thanks, good deskmate."

"..."

Upon arrival, Xu Chuwan and Zhang Jiye went to the classroom together and took their seats.

After finishing classes in the morning, Xu Chuwan, Shen Yan, and the other two went to eat. While eating, Shen Yan said to Xu Chuwan, "Chuanwan, don't you even look at the school notices?"

Xu Chuwan was a little confused and said, "Huh?"

Shen Yan sighed, found the post, showed it to her, and said, "This post says that you and Zhang Jiye took the bus together this morning, and that you two are dating."

"..."

Xu Chuwan looked at the comments below the post:

First floor: Holy crap! The top student and the second-best student in the grade are dating like this!!!

Second floor: No way?! They're dating! I heard they're even deskmates.

Third floor: I think Zhang Jiye got off too easy. Xu Chuwan is so beautiful!!! And so well-behaved!!!

After reading it, Xu Chuwan said, "No, I have no relationship with Zhang Jiye. We are just ordinary friends."

Xia Yi also found it outrageous, saying, "Our Wanwan is so well-behaved, how could she possibly date a bad boy?! This is completely absurd."

Su Ruan also said, "That's right, Wanwan, why don't you tell the teacher that they're spreading rumors about you in the school's posts?"

Xu Chuwan said indifferently, "It's fine, let them say whatever they want."

Shen Yan said, "I admire you. You can swallow this insult. Wanwan, you're too good-natured."

"..."

After dinner, Xu Chuwan dropped her student card. Xia Yi picked it up and was about to check her birthday when she saw it was October 9th. She realized it was Xu Chuwan's birthday and immediately grabbed her by the neck with a laugh: "You! It's your birthday today and you didn't tell us!"

Xu Chuwan smiled and begged for mercy, saying, "Please spare me."

Xia Yi then let her go and said to Shen Yan and Su Ruan, "Happy birthday, Wanwan."

Xu Chuwan smiled and said, "Thank you."

After school, Xu Chuwan stood at the bus stop waiting for the bus to go home. She thought she would be spending her birthday alone again. Then Shen Yan called and said, "Chuanwan, come to that alley near the school. There's a surprise for you."

Xu Chuwan asked, "What surprise is it?"

Shen Yan said, "Oh, you'll see when you get here."

After hanging up the phone, Xu Chuwan went to the alleyway near the school, but found nothing there. She thought Shen Yan was joking with her and prepared to go back.

As I turned around, I saw Shen Yan, Xia Yi, Su Ruan, and... Zhang Jiye, Cheng Junming, and Lin Nianyu behind me.

The six of them said in unison, "Happy birthday, Xu Chuwan."

A warm feeling welled up in Xu Chuwan's heart. She hadn't expected that she wouldn't be alone on her birthday this year.

Xu Chuwan was taken aback for a moment, then smiled and said to them, "Thank you."

Holding a cake, Zhang Jiye smiled and said to Xu Chuwan, "Happy birthday to your deskmate. Blow out the candles and make a wish."

Xu Chuwan's wish is that every year's birthday will be the same as this year's.

After Xu Chuwan finished making her wish, Zhang Jiye was very curious and shamelessly asked, "What did you wish for?"

Xu Chuwan said, "I won't tell you."

Zhang Jiye clicked his tongue and said, "So stingy? Maybe I can help you fulfill your wish if your deskmate can."

"..."

After finishing the cake, Zhang Jiye accompanied Xu Chuwan on the bus home. Xu Chuwan said, "Thank you for today."

Zhang Jiye said, "No need to thank me. We're good friends."

Xu Chuwan asked, "When is your birthday?"

Zhang Jiye said, "It's long past, September 17th."

Xu Chuwan said "Oh," and after a few seconds of silence, she said, "I can celebrate your birthday with you next year too."

Zhang Jiye smiled and said, "Okay, then I'm really looking forward to having you with me for my birthday next year."

Xu Chuwan arrived at her stop and said to Zhang Jiye, "See you tomorrow, Zhang Jiye."

Zhang Jiye said, "Okay, see you tomorrow, little birthday boy."

When Xu Chuwan heard the title "Little Birthday Star," the corners of her mouth turned up slightly.

After returning home, Xu Chuwan took a shower, sat at her desk, took out her diary, and wrote in it:

This year's birthday was the happiest of my seventeen birthdays because—Zhang Jiye was there.

With him around, she wasn't lonely.
