"What's wrong? Do you have any doubts about me?" Zhao Yue'er asked softly, her voice revealing a hint of confusion and concern.
Lin Mo frowned slightly, his expression appearing somewhat grave in the dim light. "No, I didn't doubt you." He shook his head, trying to make his tone sound more natural. "I believe you. Let's continue."
Thus, the three of them—Lin Mo, Zhao Yue'er, and the mighty giant wolf—once again embarked on their journey.
This time, the giant wolf led the way.
During the journey, the giant wolf suddenly darted into a dark doorway and disappeared into the darkness.
Not long after, the giant wolf reappeared, carrying a gray rat in its mouth. The rat looked dying, clearly the wolf's prey.
The moment Lin Mo's gaze fell upon the rat, his eyes widened, overwhelmed with indescribable shock. He blurted out, "This...this is a rat?" His words were filled with astonishment and disbelief.
The gray rat was so large that it was comparable in size to an adult cat.
Moreover, it's not the petite, delicate kind of kitten.
"What's the big deal?" Zhao Yue'er smiled dismissively, her voice tinged with a hint of mockery. "Have you heard the legend of the 'Rat Chef'? It's said that those rats are almost as big as a sow..."
"This..." Lin Mo was speechless for a moment, a strange sense of absurdity welling up in his heart, "An old sow?"
“That’s right!” Zhao Yue’er nodded, her smile growing even brighter. “This place is much older than your Great Xia. It’s been abandoned for so many years, and the species inside have all mutated. So, it’s not surprising to see a rat that’s the size of a sow.”
Her words were light and natural, as if she were talking about something perfectly ordinary. However, to Lin Mo, it sounded like a fairy tale, unbelievable.
Then they continued on their way.
In this city abandoned by time, countless dark doors stand silently.
In those dimly lit corners, rats busily scurried about, their footsteps echoing through the cellars and intricate passageways, adding an eerie atmosphere to this desolate city.
Lin Mo stood quietly, and he could clearly hear the small creatures rustling and crawling in the darkness.
The giant wolf wanted to go down to scout, but Lin Mo stopped it.
Because he knew all too well that in the darkness deep within this city lurked something far more terrifying than rats.
"This place is unbelievably ancient!" Lin Mo walked slowly along the dilapidated corridor, his footsteps echoing in the empty hall. Sunlight streamed through the broken windows, forming dappled beams of light.
“It’s several times older than Wuzhong City in Jidong,” he said as he walked.
"Wuzhong City?" Zhao Yue'er asked. "Is it the city on the border between Jidong and Dongpange in the Great Xia Dynasty?"
"Yes!"
"Hehe, how can a human city compare to the dwelling place of the gods?" Zhao Yue'er chuckled. "Brother Lin, do you know? In the era when the believers of the Faceless God lived there, three-quarters of the rooms in this seemingly prosperous city were already empty."
It was suggested that the believers build a new, small castle seven miles east of the city as a replacement for the old city.
There, it winds and stretches along a beautiful green lake.
Later, the followers of the Faceless God left this place to the rats.
"That was hundreds of years ago!" Lin Mo thought to himself. "Now, Deep Lake Residence is just as abandoned and empty as the castle it replaced, and this godforsaken place..."
Then, they spent more than an hour groping around in the dark.
As they walked, Lin Mo suddenly realized that they had come to a place that resembled a dungeon.
It was a damp, dark dungeon, large enough to hold thousands of prisoners, but when Lin Mo grabbed a rusty bar, it broke in his hand.
"Is this really a secret passage leading to the mortal realm?" Lin Mo couldn't help but ask.
"Please trust me, it can't be wrong!" Zhao Yue'er said firmly.
Keep going, and the further you go, the darker it gets.
For some reason, a sense of unease lingered in the giant wolf's heart.
It seemed to sense that in this strange and unpredictable place, an unknown and terrifying creature was lurking in the shadows, its deep, hollow eyes coldly staring at it through layers of darkness.
Suddenly, the giant wolf stopped, its gaze fixed on the scene before it. Scattered on the ground were countless enormous bones, each with a different shape, seemingly from some colossal and terrifying creature. These bones exuded a chilling aura, sending shivers down one's spine.
Lin Mo cautiously approached the bones, the torch in his hand swaying gently with his movements. He reached out and touched one of the bones, which resembled a human, and immediately felt an indescribable chill.
This bone was as cold as if it had just been pulled from an icy abyss, hard enough to withstand the erosion of any wind or rain. Especially those teeth, sharp and deep black, gleaming with a chilling light, like daggers hidden in the dark night.
"Try not to touch them, these things might be poisonous!" Lin Mo said.
So the giant wolf tried with all its might to move the heavy skull.
However, a far larger skeleton lay before them, clearly not of human form. In an instant, the massive skeleton seemed to come alive, as if about to open its blood-red maw and pounce on them, tearing their flesh to shreds.
Faced with this sudden and terrifying sight, the giant wolf's body trembled involuntarily.
