Chapter 385 Familiar Place!

The city gates of the capital were tightly closed and bolted. Before the dawn broke, the city walls had already quietly revealed their faint white outlines in the darkness, like a sleeping giant, silently waiting for the sunrise.

Atop the battlements, wisps of mist swirled, like ethereal ghostly sentinels silently patrolling. In this quiet and solemn atmosphere, a dozen horse-drawn carriages and oxcarts had already quietly gathered outside the city gate, awaiting the sunrise.

Lin Mo dismounted from behind a fully loaded oxcart. His calves were a little sore from the long ride, but he didn't care. He simply stretched them and felt much better.

Soon, a rumbling sound came from the depths of the woods, and another trailer truck slowly drove out. Its appearance made the already somewhat crowded queue even longer. But all the vehicles were lined up in an orderly manner, without the slightest panic.

As time passed, the sky began to brighten. By the time the first rays of sunlight touched the city walls, the procession had stretched for a quarter of a mile.

The people entering the city would occasionally glance at him curiously, but no one spoke to him.

At this moment, Lin Mo, who had been a member of the Transmigrators Guild, had disguised himself and become a burly man with an extremely ugly appearance!

It must be said that Lin Mo's disguise was very successful, because most people were not willing to spend too much time looking at him.

Because my current appearance is just too...

As dawn broke, guards appeared on the city walls. The farmers climbed onto their carts, shook the reins, and Lin Mo mounted his horse.

Looking back, most of those waiting to enter the city were farmers, their trucks laden with fruits and vegetables for sale.

About ten cars apart, there were two wealthy city dwellers riding fine horses, and behind them, only a vast procession of ordinary people.

At the city gate, the guards, like ancient guardians, held long spears and waved continuously to signal the tow trucks to enter the city, their eyes revealing a calm indifference born of habit. However, when Lin Mo's figure appeared before them, this tranquil atmosphere was suddenly shattered.

"You, stop right there!" A loud shout echoed like thunder above the city gate. The captain, a middle-aged man with a full beard and sharp eyes, was staring intently at Lin Mo, his eyes gleaming with scrutiny.

The two guards beside him, clad in heavy armor, with their spears crossed, formed two solid barriers, firmly blocking Lin Mo's path.

Lin Mo remained expressionless, staring directly at the captain, his voice firm and powerful: "I came to the capital to join the army! In response to His Majesty's call, to wipe out the traitor Lin Mo."

At Iria's suggestion, the four of them would travel separately, making it easier to sneak into the city.

And nothing could persuade the guards more easily than to join the army as a reason to enter the city.

The captain's gaze lingered on the longsword in Lin Mo's hand for a few seconds. Although the blade was mottled, its sharpness was undeniable. However, a disdainful smile curled at the corner of his mouth: "With this piece of junk?"

Lin Mo frowned slightly, seemingly displeased with the captain's disdain, but he quickly regained his composure and asked in return, "What, you don't get weapons after joining the army?"

"Oh?" The captain narrowed his eyes slightly, his rough fingers gently stroking his stubble-covered chin, a playful glint in his eyes. "You're quite an interesting fellow! Joining the army? Heh, what a fine ambition."

After the laughter subsided, the captain's smile faded, and he said seriously, "Recently, spies have been rampant in the capital, and His Majesty has ordered a thorough investigation of all outsiders. Therefore, before you join the army, we need to investigate your background. However, in the meantime, you can settle down at the inn."

Upon hearing this, Lin Mo secretly breathed a sigh of relief, cupped his hands in a salute, and said, "Thank you, Captain! May I ask where the inn is?"

This question eased the captain's suspicion of Lin Mo somewhat. After all, it would be suspicious if a newcomer to the capital knew everything about it. Lin Mo's question, however, proved his unfamiliarity and ignorance of the city.

"Haha, you've come to the right person!" the captain said. "My cousin happens to run an inn. Go check into the Seven Swords Inn on Tiancheng Street, the one with the picture on the door."

As the captain spoke, he pointed to a building in the distance and said, "The inn is over there. Just walk straight down this street and turn the corner. Go and stay there for now. Remember to give me my name when you arrive."

He gestured to the guard. "Let him through, he's a real man!"

Returning to this bustling capital city, Lin Mo felt a surge of indescribable emotions.

This was not just a change of identity; what shocked him even more was the changes in the capital.

This ancient yet vibrant city has undergone tremendous changes.

He rode past, the merchants along the way hawking weapons and armor, their shouts rising and falling, yet unable to conceal the cheapness and crudeness of their wares. From the cacophony of prices, Lin Mo could easily deduce that what he saw before him were all low-quality war supplies.

As war rages on, looters, circling like crows, appear amidst the chaos, their shadows seemingly inseparable from the gloom of war.

As his gaze fell upon the armor, its brown bloodstains still fresh, it seemed to tell the story of a fierce battle that had just taken place; the dents in the helmet were like marks sculpted by time and war; and the nicks on the blade of the longsword seemed to speak of its former sharpness and glory.

There were also clothing stalls where the boots were covered in dust and mud, the fur cloaks were frayed, and the coats were stained and had several suspicious holes, as if whispering the plight of their owners.
