Chapter 35 "Poverty requires integrity, and wealth requires humanity"

I hurried to Mengxi's side, then extended my hand and introduced her to the two elders: "This is my girlfriend, Lin Mengxi."

Lin Mengxi's eyes widened in shock. She was stunned for a moment, her face turning red. After a moment's pause, she quickly adjusted herself and said very politely, "Uncle, Auntie. Hello."

The old man and the old woman looked at each other with a strange look in their eyes, but they still responded politely: "Hello, hello."

I smiled and said, "Dad, I'll take you to my dormitory and let Mengxi accompany me around."

"good."

Then I took the old man to the dormitory.

As soon as we entered the dormitory, the three of them were each holding a book and reading it. As we entered, the three of them immediately put down their books. Zhu Wei said, "Uncle, hello, my name is Zhu Wei, and I'm Lin Yu's good brother."

"Hello uncle, my name is Xia Jie and his name is Yang Bin."

The old man nodded and said with a smile, "My son has a lot of problems. I really hope you can be more tolerant of him."

Zhu Wei said: "Uncle, it's okay. Lin Yu has a good personality and a good temper. We are all good brothers, so don't worry."

Then, after hearing what Zhu Wei said, the old man said with a kind smile on his face: "That's good. Have you eaten? Uncle will take you out for dinner."

Zhu Wei and the other two hurriedly shook their heads. Xia Jie responded with a smile, "We've all eaten. Uncle, you and Lin Yu haven't seen each other for a long time. You guys go, we won't go."

Seeing this, my father didn't force me any more and said with a smile, "Then let's go." After that, I accompanied my father out.

After going downstairs, my dad and I walked around the area and soon found Mengxi and my mom.

Afterwards, the four of us got into my dad's Lavida. Mengxi and I sat in the back. I pointed the way and headed towards a small restaurant.

We sat down, and Dad pushed the menu to Mengxi and said with a smile, "Girl, take a look, what do you want to eat?"

Meng Xi quickly waved her hands: "Uncle and aunt, you can order whatever you want. I eat everything. I'm not picky."

The old lady heard: "You're welcome."

Mengxi then pushed the menu to me and said, "Let Lin Yu order."

I had no choice but to order a steamed sea bass, a vegetable dish, and stir-fried edamame with meat.

Meng Xi looked at the dishes I ordered and whispered, "Don't you like spicy food? Why did you order these? Are your aunt and the others used to them?"

"Because you can't stand spicy food."

Dad and Mom just looked at us with a smile. Meng Xi looked up and her cheeks flushed with embarrassment: "Who said I can't eat it? I am used to it."

"Girl, it's okay, we brought some home-cooked food."

Afterwards, I asked the waiter to heat up the dishes that my mother had packed and charged him a processing fee of ten yuan.

As soon as the dishes were served, they started chatting.

This time, Meng Xi insisted that she was used to it, so she ate a lot of blood duck and pig's trotters, praising my mother's cooking skills.

I saw that she was sweating profusely from the spicy food, but she was still eating. Dad directly ordered a bottle of milk for Mengxi. Mengxi's face was flushed red, and I couldn't tell whether it was because of the spiciness or because of embarrassment.

Then, Mom nudged Dad, and Dad quickly walked out and said, "I'll get something. You guys eat first."

Meng Xi nodded obediently.

I said, "Let me go with you." I patted Mengxi's little head and followed her.

Sitting in the car, I asked the old man: "What are you taking?"

Dad pulled out a red envelope from the passenger seat, then took out his wallet. I watched him stuff 1,888 yuan into it. Then he glanced at me and said, "This is for your girlfriend."

When I heard this, I subconsciously rolled my eyes and didn't know what to say for a moment.

Dad then said, "Mengxi's family conditions are much better than ours. Do you think you are worthy of her?"

I lowered my head and said nothing. I had almost overcome this feeling of inferiority, but it started to resurface again.

"You're definitely not going to like what I'm saying, but I still have to say that you and Ye Yao are actually more suitable for each other than Meng Xi. Do you understand what I mean?"

I said helplessly: "I know, but Ye Yao and I are over. I am not after Mengxi's family's money. Please don't misunderstand me."

"Yes, you and Ye Yao are not destined to be together. But I hope you won't regret it one day, because your families are so different."

Seeing that I didn't say anything, he continued, "If you really get to that point, what will her parents think? What will her brother say? Young people nowadays don't care about dating, but you can't have the final say on marriage. Are you sure your relationship can go through that?"

I turned my head to the window, one hand clutching my sleeve tightly: "I'm not sure." Then I continued to ask: "If you are so pessimistic about us, why did you give us a meeting gift? Isn't this something you usually give when you visit someone's house? I don't think even Ye Yao received one."

Dad sighed and said helplessly: "I just want to make it clear to you that if you two are lucky enough to persevere, you will most likely experience these problems in the future. You and Ye Yao were still young at that time. I originally thought that your family would give it to her after the college entrance examination, but I didn't expect it to end so soon. I am also satisfied with Mengxi, because I know some things and don't want you to owe her too much. This is just a red envelope for her. When you come to our house in the future as a meeting gift, I will naturally prepare another one. Don't worry about this."

My eyes were slightly red, I bit my lips and said nothing.

Dad patted me on the shoulder and said, "Be a real man, living in this world, don't deliberately take advantage of others, understand? If you are not careful, you must pay it back even if it means losing everything, no matter how poor or miserable you are! Remember, no matter what happens in the future, be down-to-earth. Be humane when you are rich, and have integrity when you are poor."

I took a deep breath. I knew what my father meant by what he said today. He was afraid that I was deliberately contacting Mengxi to get her family's money, but when I asked myself, I didn't, and I wouldn't. I was really moved by her, so I wanted to be with her.

I said quietly, "Don't you believe your son?"

Dad patted my shoulder.

Then he took out another two thousand yuan and handed it to me, saying, "One thousand is really too little for living expenses. You've been like this since you were little. I still remember when you were in junior high school, you were given ten yuan a week, and breakfast was three yuan. The school only provided lunch and dinner. If you hadn't fainted from hunger during morning reading one time and the teacher called us, we wouldn't have known about it."

I took it, thinking about the past incident, shook my head, and said with a smile, "You guys work really hard, and you pushed me to study... Learning guitar already costs a lot of money, and I don't want to ask for more to add to your burden. I'll spend whatever you give me. Anyway, as long as I don't starve to death, it's okay. That was just an accident. I missed dinner the day before, otherwise I wouldn't have fainted after eating twice a day."

Dad smiled and said, "Aside from studying, you've given us very little to worry about. But studying doesn't mean anything, you know? I'm open-minded, but I'm also very rigid. I used my connections to get you into university, just so you don't have any regrets in the future."

I glanced at my dad and understood everything: "Let's go, don't keep me waiting anxiously."
