Chapter 7: Childlike Lin Mengxi

I was in the dormitory at five o'clock, just came back from eating braised chicken with everyone.

I lay on the upper bunk with my arms and legs spread out, hoping to take this opportunity to relax and relieve the fatigue of the whole day.

Who would have thought that the people below were playing games with all their enthusiasm, as if they had been injected with chicken blood. The keyboards were crackling non-stop, and the sounds of mouse clicking, shouting, and cursing were intertwined together, making my head buzzing and very annoyed.

I stuck my head out and yelled to the people below, "Why don't you go find your girlfriends instead of playing these bullshit games?"

Zhu Wei paused what he was doing, turned his neck, and raised his chin at me with a smug look on his face: "I do have a goal, but I can't talk too much every day. This is called playing hard to get, do you understand?"

"Damn it, you even brought up the art of war! Only you can do that!"

Yang Bin, wearing headphones, staring intently at the screen, his hands constantly moving, took a moment to reply, "Playing games is so much fun. Dating is so troublesome. You have to coax and accompany the person. How can it be as free as playing games?"

Xia Jie smiled and said, "I haven't found anyone who makes my heart flutter yet. Instead of awkward chats, I'd rather just kill everyone in the game."

Seeing that they were so stubborn, I was so angry that I rolled my eyes and simply picked up the headphones from the pillow and put them on.

My fingers seemed to be out of control and I inexplicably opened the photo album on my phone. The moment the page jumped, all the photos with Ye Yao came into my sight.

In the photo, we are smiling brightly. She holds my arm affectionately, her eyes full of love.

But now, things have changed and people have changed. The sweeter the memories are, the bitterer the reality is.

I was stunned for a moment, then mechanically reached out and pulled the quilt over me, covering myself completely in it, as if trying to avoid this heartbreaking fact.

In the dark quilt, I took a deep breath and sent a message to Ye Yao with trembling fingers: "Are you okay?" The moment I clicked send, I was filled with anxiety.

The red and cold exclamation mark suddenly appeared on the screen, like a basin of piercing cold water, directly extinguishing the faint expectation in my heart.

I stared at the screen with my eyes wide open, unable to believe my eyes and unwilling to accept this result.

I frantically slid my fingers up and down the screen, refreshing it over and over again. It seemed that if I refreshed it a few more times, the glaring exclamation mark would disappear.

But reality is cold and cruel, forcing me to repeat these futile actions.

I couldn't hold it in any longer, I covered my mouth and sobbed, my eyes could no longer contain the surging emotions, tears as big as beans burst out, wetting the pillowcase, my sobs were muffled by the quilt, and no one knew the sadness in my heart.

Just when I was immersed in sadness and tears couldn't stop flowing, my phone rang and a text message came.

My heart trembled suddenly, thinking it was Ye Yao's message. She must have clicked the wrong one! I quickly opened it and saw that it was from Lin Mengxi.

The message was brief and to the point, yet it carried an irresistible aura: "I've been waiting for you downstairs for half an hour!"

I was extremely reluctant and had no intention of going out at the moment. My mind was full of Ye Yao and that glaring red exclamation mark.

But when he saw the word "half an hour", he couldn't help but sigh, thinking that the girl had been waiting for so long, it would be bad to let her continue waiting.

So, I gritted my teeth, forced myself to stop crying, raised my hands to wipe the tear marks from the corners of my eyes and cheeks, reached out to lift the quilt, and sat up.

I yelled angrily, "Play as hard as you can, until you die!"

Zhu Wei gave me a shrewd look, an expression that showed he understood everything. He shouted the game's operating instructions and took the time to reply, "Bring us some food when you come back."

"Get lost! Go and starve yourself!"

Lin Mengxi stood quietly in the shadow of the big tree downstairs, still wearing the same beautiful dress. The breeze blew, and her skirt swayed gently. She was as beautiful as a painting.

Seeing me walking out of the dormitory door, the corners of her mouth rose slightly, revealing a faint smile, and then she walked towards me with light steps.

Walking closer, she tilted her head, her eyes filled with concern, and asked softly, "I heard you were crying again just now? I didn't mean to do that this afternoon. I didn't expect to upset you."

When I heard it, I immediately guessed that it must be Zhu Wei, that big mouth. I don’t know what rumors he made up, and the girl believed them to be true.

But seeing her sincere expression, I couldn't expose her, so I could only bite the bullet and wave my hands and say, "It's okay, it's really okay, I'm just a little upset, it will pass in a while."

Lin Mengxi didn't let me brush her off. She moved closer, tilted her head, looked at my still red eyes, frowned slightly, and her eyes were full of heartache.

She took out a tissue from her pocket, gently raised her hand, and carefully wiped the corners of my eyes. As she wiped, she said, "Little Wood, I feel like you seem very sensitive. You cried when you were playing the piano this morning, and you cried again just now for such a small thing. Your little heart is too fragile."

When I heard this name, I felt so depressed. I frowned and retorted, "What a little piece of wood! This name is too ugly."

Lin Mengxi disagreed. She crossed her arms, raised her chin slightly, and replied confidently, "Isn't it? You're just like a little piece of wood, and your last name just happens to be Lin."

"Isn't your last name Lin too?"

"But I'm smarter than you!" After saying that, Lin Mengxi grabbed my hand without hesitation. Her little hand was soft, but very strong. She pulled me forward and said with a smile, "Let's go for a walk on the street."

"It's late at night, and you're still out on the street? What's there to do?"
