Chapter 23 Sisters

With so much going on lately, Yan Yaru gazed calmly into the distance from the window, feeling a great sense of relief as her long-cherished wish was finally fulfilled.

Holding an old photograph in her arms, a color photograph, from a time when color was just beginning to appear, she gently stroked the photograph with her fingers, and tears fell silently.

He murmured, "Sister, did you see that? I finally avenged you and ruined that man's reputation. I heard he's going to be executed. From now on, no one will bully the most important person in your life." It's a pity you can't share this joy with me.

Hot tears dripped from her cheeks onto the smooth back of her hand. She covered her mouth with one hand, her delicate crying appearance was incredibly pitiful.

When Yan Yaru's adoptive mother pushed open the door and came in, she saw her daughter crying sadly. Her heart ached and she sobbed, "Yaru, why are you crying?"

Her darling.

As if finding an outlet, Yan Yaru buried her face in her mother's lap and burst into tears.

A very long time passed, so long that when Yan's mother thought her daughter was asleep, she suddenly sat up, which startled her. "Baby, what's wrong?"

Yan Yaru simply glanced at her mother calmly and casually asked, "Mom, did you need something from me?"

She remembered that her mother hadn't knocked before coming in, and seeing her mother's hesitant gesture earlier, she understood what was going on.

Seeing that her mother had asked directly, Yan's mother could no longer hide it. "Ya Ru, I know that you have been through a lot recently, so your father and I are thinking of sending you abroad to relax."

If you were to do something crazy again, they would be completely disgraced. She didn't say the last part, but she knew her daughter was a woman of her own mind and had a strong personality.

Shen Shiyi was quite surprised when she received Yan Yaru's call. Her phone vibrated in the office, and Shen Shiyi greeted her with a formal greeting.

Hello!

There was no reply on the phone for a long time, and she thought it was a wrong number. Just as she was about to hang up, the other party suddenly spoke.

She heard a gentle, sweet voice, and a familiar feeling suddenly arose; she knew who it was.

"haven't seen you for a long time."

Yan Yaru knew she would give such a nonchalant answer and didn't mind.

He continued, "Tomorrow afternoon at the xxxx teahouse, see you there." Without waiting for her reply, he hung up. Shen Shiyi's handsome eyebrows furrowed slightly.

She really didn't understand what this girl was up to. They didn't seem to know each other well, which only fueled her curiosity. Once someone's curiosity was piqued, they wouldn't stop there.

The next morning, after finishing her morning exercise, Shen Shiyi arrived at the designated place as agreed. It was a quiet and elegant place, perfect for leisure time.

This shows that the owner has a quiet personality. After all, he served in the army for several years, so he's quite good at understanding people's minds.

Led in by the waiter, she saw Yan Yaru sitting by the window, intently sipping tea. She was dressed in a fairy-like tulle dress, looking like a quiet, classical woman.

That subtle, almost imperceptible look in her eyes evoked a sense of tenderness, prompting a feeling of "how familiar" to one's heart.

He strode over, sat down directly, and raised an eyebrow, saying, "Speak."

She wants to see what kind of news story she can get this year.

The girl with an exceptional air about her immediately looked away and smiled slightly at her, "You've come."

Such familiar words, like those of longtime friends, made her somewhat uncomfortable with her overly familiar manner.

Having spent many years in the military, he developed an open, honest, and straightforward personality, and he doesn't like to be insincere with people.

He said rather rudely, "Speak quickly if you have something to say."

She came all this way from afar, not just to have tea with her.

Yan Yaru paused upon hearing this, and after a few seconds smiled at her. Shen Shiyi's memories, hidden deep within her mind, were stirred up again.

That clear, sunny, and warm smile reminded her of her locked-up memories. She remembered that she used to like to laugh like that, laughing without any restraint.

But things are different now; the old friends are gone, and all that remains in retrospect is sorrow.

She quickly snapped out of her reverie, her gaze instantly changing, her eyes becoming calm and still, replacing her previous serene expression.

Despite the short time, Yan Yaru still noticed her, as her gaze hadn't left her since she sat down.

"Don't you already know the answer in your heart?"

Shen Shiyi glanced at her and asked, "Hmm?" Tolerating her was a question of intelligence.

Yan Yaru smiled but said nothing, lowered her head to sip her tea, and time passed by second by second. She looked at the apricot tree outside the window and murmured as if recalling something, or as if talking to herself, "Look, how strong that apricot tree has grown."

Why does that sound so familiar?

Where have I heard this before?

"I remember that there were many such apricot trees at XXXX University. They were a beautiful sight on campus, and many people liked to take pictures under them, including me. It's been many years since I took a picture under an apricot tree."

After speaking, she took out a stack of photos from her handbag, which were precious memories she had treasured for many years.

Shen Shiyi looked at the photos in her hand with great surprise. They were all scenes from her alma mater, and more importantly, she recognized the people in them.

One photo shows two girls with long hair cascading down their shoulders, laughing happily. It's clear they had a good relationship at the time.

Wearing identical long dresses, one swan-white and the other pure black, both ethereal tulle gowns, they both had beautiful dimples. One had softened the passage of time, the other had stunned the world—that perfectly described them. During their school years, they were inseparable, known by teachers and classmates as "the most beautiful sister duo" and "the school beauty sisters"...

Suppressing her inner excitement, Shen Shiyi glanced at her and asked, "Why?"

She felt "envy and jealousy," but couldn't bring herself to hate them, because they had also amazed and touched her life, so much so that in the years that followed, she would always consciously or unconsciously observe and learn from their ways of doing things...

"don't know."

"Don't you think I look a bit like her?" He casually pointed to the girl on the table.

With her pointing it out, at first glance it really was true: curved willow-leaf eyebrows, a delicate V-shaped face, and well-defined features. Upon closer inspection, there was indeed a resemblance in their eyebrows. Could it be...?

Shen Shiyi looked at her deeply, and for a long time the two remained silent, sitting quietly until the strong sunlight shone directly on them.

Shen Shiyi declined Yan Yaru's invitation to dinner, hurriedly ate lunch outside, and then rushed back to the army base out of boredom.

Things that cause her headaches, helplessness, annoyance, and even hatred come knocking on her door.

She felt no goodwill whatsoever towards her former in-laws, only disgust.

In her memory, her mother-in-law was a noble lady who maintained her appearance to the fullest. Now, she was such an old and sad woman that she almost didn't recognize her.

After experiencing that incident, Li's mother, He Meiya, and her husband, Li's father, Li Hongbo, aged many years. This can be considered the cycle of karma, and evil deeds will be punished.

"Colonel, they're here to see you. They're waiting over there."

"Hmm." Shen Shiyi simply glanced at him calmly, and the young soldier saluted sheepishly and walked away.

Oh my god, his poor heart.
