Chapter 14: Returning Home

Watching the fun in the morning delayed them for a while, and it was almost noon when Mingmei and her husband returned home.

Mingmei's father, Ming Xiangdong, is a truck driver who specializes in traveling to other places for a freight company. His family lives in the freight company's staff quarters. Compared to the courtyard houses allocated nearby by the machinery factory, the houses here are basically all buildings.

Zhuang Zhixi drove his wife into the community and quickly parked the car downstairs of Mingmei's house.

Mingmei's mother Lan Ling had been standing at the window looking out early in the morning. She had been waiting for her daughter to finally come back. When she saw the young couple, she didn't care about the cold outside and opened the window and called, "Nannan."

Ming's mother is from the south, and in her hometown it is customary to call baby girls "Nannan".

Mingmei looked up, uttered a crisp "ah", and then waved her hands happily.

As soon as she responded, people from several windows of the building looked down. There was no entertainment these days, so any little thing happening in each household would be the most lively gossip. Mingmei's return home was considered a big gossip.

Naturally, all the neighbors were staring at Mingmei's return gift.

The amount of the gift this time is related to the degree of respect the young daughter-in-law receives in her husband's family, so it is very particular. When he took another look, he saw that the fish was really big.

While the neighbors were watching the fun, Mingmei and his wife had already parked the car and went upstairs. Lan Ling opened the door to greet them and said, "Why did you come back just now? We've been waiting for you. Come in quickly, it's cold outside." She led the two people in.

The Ming family lived on the second floor. As soon as I entered the door, I saw that all the Ming family members were there. Mingmei's little nephew Junjun ran to Mingmei and hugged her legs at once, saying in a baby voice: "Auntie, where have you been? Why don't you come back? Baby misses you."

Mingmei burst out laughing and picked up her three-year-old nephew. She rocked the little guy and said, "Aunt is getting married. We will live out after getting married. But Aunt bought some candy for Junjun."

Junjun's eyes sparkled and he clapped his hands happily: "Eat candy, eat candy."

He is one year younger than Xiaoyanzi.

Mingmei held the little one in her arms, grabbed a handful of candies from the bag and stuffed them into his hands. The little guy immediately smiled, showing his little white teeth, and drooled from laughing.

Mingmei also smiled: "Dad, I'm back."

Ming Xiangdong is less than fifty years old, tall and strong, with a broad back and strong waist. There is a scar on the corner of his forehead, which adds a bit of fierceness to him. Ming Mei doesn't look like her father, but more like her mother Lan Ling. Both Ming brothers and sisters look more like their mother.

Although Ming's father looks fierce, he smiles brightly when he sees his daughter. He waves his hand and says, "Come here, Nannan. Dad has bought your favorite snacks."

It’s as if he didn’t see his son-in-law.

Zhuang Zhixi was very outgoing and called everyone one by one.

Ming's father hummed in agreement. Mingmei's eldest brother Mingcheng smiled and said, "Brother-in-law, please sit down."

Mingcheng and Zhuang Zhixi have known each other for a long time. Mingcheng and Zhuang Zhixi's brother Zhuang Zhiyuan have been classmates from elementary school to high school, and are still colleagues now. When Zhuang Zhixi was young, he often followed his brother around and played with these older brothers. He was a sweet-mouthed boy who always called his brothers "older brothers", so Mingcheng had a good impression of him.

I can't introduce him to my sister either.

He smiled and said, "You treat my sister well, don't you?"

Zhuang Zhixi quickly expressed his loyalty: "Of course, she is my wife. If I don't treat her well, who can I treat well? I can wake up with a smile when I marry such a good wife, but I can't bear to treat her badly. Brother Mingcheng, I am so sad that you doubt me like this."

Ming's father: "Tsk."

Zhuang Zhixi: "Dad, I'm telling the truth... Hey, Mom, let me do it, I'll help you."

Lan Ling was about to kill a fish to add to the dishes. Zhuang Zhixi quickly stood up to help. Lan Ling said, "You are not needed. The two of us can do it."

The "two of us" she mentioned was of course not referring to her daughter, but to her daughter-in-law Tao Qing. Tao Qing smiled at Zhuang Zhixi.

Zhuang Zhixi: "Mom, just let me show off. I'm not that good at this, but I can help out. Let sister-in-law go to the living room and play with Mingmei. I'll help you out and chat with you."

Zhuang Zhixi is also very good at flattering people. Even though he is lazy and doesn't work at home, this is his first time to officially come to his father-in-law's house, so he really pretends to be a respectable person.

At least, Lan Ling thought this son-in-law was really good. She smiled and nodded, saying, "You are a grown man, and you still go into the kitchen?"

Zhuang Zhixi: "So what? Men are also human beings. This job doesn't distinguish between men and women. Come on, I'll do it."

The kitchen is so small and it's a bit messy with three people. Lan Ling looked at her daughter-in-law and said, "Tao Qing, please go out."

Tao Qing glanced at Zhuang Zhixi again and said, "Okay."

This sister-in-law is okay.

There were immediately only two people left in the kitchen. Although Zhuang Zhixi and Mingmei brought four things back home, to be honest, Lan Ling thought the fish was the best. Each of them was more than 30 centimeters long. The four big fish were almost the same size and were very attractive to look at.

The gift was well prepared, which naturally showed the importance the father attached to her daughter, so Lan Ling was satisfied.

She said: "My daughter has been spoiled by her family since she was young. She is a bit naive and doesn't know worries. You will have to bear more of her caress after you get married. She is actually a simple child, not very cunning. Sometimes she may mean well but do bad things. If she does something wrong, tell me and I will support you."

Even though Lan Ling wanted to regret the marriage several times before the marriage, since they were married, Lan Ling would not say anything unpleasant or annoying. She said something very pleasant to the ear and very soothing.

Zhuang Zhixi: "Mingmei is very good. I like her so much that I don't think there is anything wrong with her."

Zhuang Zhixi hit a straight hook, which was to Lan Ling's liking. She nodded slightly, thinking that this son-in-law had many good points, except that he was sweet-talking, which was something her husband could not do.

She smiled and said, "As long as you are doing well, we as parents will be relieved, and you as children don't have to worry too much about us. Whether it's Mingcheng and his wife or you two, as long as you are doing well, we will be happy. Don't be fooled by the cold look your father gives you, he actually likes you very much in his heart. He has a sharp tongue but a soft heart."

Zhuang Zhixi said quickly, "I know. In fact, my father-in-law is a bit like my mother. My mother also has a sharp tongue but a kind heart. She usually scolds us harshly, but she actually cares about us in her heart. But don't worry, mother-in-law. Although my mother has a sharp tongue, she is reluctant to scold Mingmei. I am the one who gets scolded."

Lan Ling nodded slightly and said with a smile: "All parents are like this. No matter who is right or wrong, it is not good to scold other people's children. It's okay to be casual about the children raised by your own family." She seemed to be chatting casually, but Zhuang Zhixi understood what his mother-in-law meant.

Whose baby can be bullied by others?

Zhuang Zhixi thought of this and quickly said, "Mom, my family has split up."

Lan Ling's eyes jumped, but she suppressed her joy and said, "Separation? When did it happen?"

Zhuang Zhixi: "We held a family meeting on the first day of our marriage to divide the family. Oh no, it's not really a division. We don't divide the house or anything, and we don't cook and live separately. We're all still together. But from now on, we only pay for food, and my parents won't take care of anything else. We keep our own money, and I, a grown man, don't know how to manage money. My wife manages the money for us young couple."

Lan Ling's lips curled up, and she couldn't help but smile at this time, saying: "Okay, you two can handle these things by yourselves. Your parents don't care, so we naturally won't care either. We won't cause any trouble for you."

She didn't expect that her mother-in-law was a man of her word. She said she would explain the matter to her, and she really gave it to her. In fact, Lan Ling was a little unsure at first, after all, verbal agreements had no effect. And it was not surprising that ordinary people wanted to help the boss a little more.

But I didn't expect that my mother-in-law would do what she said.

She felt a little better, hummed a little tune, put the fish into the pot, and said, "This fish is really good."

If this wasn't a return visit, she would definitely be embarrassed to ask for so much fish, but since it was a return visit gift from a daughter, she didn't say a word. She covered the pot and said, "Okay, you go out. The remaining food here can be served on the table after a little scrambling. You go out and sit down. Have a couple of drinks with the old man at noon today."

Zhuang Zhixi: “Okay~”

The Ming family prepared a sumptuous lunch for their daughter's return, with fish, meat, and other dishes. It looked very respectable, even better than the wedding banquet on their wedding day. The family sat at the table, and Ming's father took out a bottle of Moutai.

Zhuang Zhixi: "This wine seems very expensive."

Ming's father: "Just drink, why are you talking so much?"

As a father, he doesn't think highly of the pig that eats his cabbage. But if he says he doesn't like it, he really doesn't. He gives a lot to his son-in-law and a lot to his son. Otherwise, everyone would say that Mei's family is well-off.

This is absolutely true. When Mingmei was still in school, her father was a truck driver and her mother was a bus conductor. They both worked. Later, Mingmei's brother Mingcheng also went to work at the railway station. Although Mingmei's sister-in-law was a temporary worker, she was also a conductor at the railway station. It can be said that the whole family had decent jobs and earned a lot of money.

Even after Lan Ling gave her job to her daughter, their family's living conditions were still very good.

After all, Ming's father drove a large truck to other places. In this day and age, being a driver is a very respectable job. For someone like him who can deliver goods to other places, there are more things he can do. His family conditions are not bad, but they are not bad here.

"Come on, have a drink, son-in-law. Let me tell you, our daughter has never suffered any injustice at home. If your daughter suffers any injustice, I will beat you..."

"My daughter, whom I raised well, got married at the age of twenty. Isn't that a joke? Why did she fall for you, a bad boy? She just looked at your face. She must have liked beautiful things since she was a child. When she was a child, she saw her grandmother had a gold hairpin. Others didn't want it, but she couldn't take her eyes off it as soon as she saw it. She held it in her hand and wouldn't let go..."

"You are a smooth talker, so you better behave yourself. If I find out that you are attracting other men outside, I will kill you! Let me tell you, I have many brothers and sisters. Dealing with you will be like dealing with a chicken..."

"For someone like you, I can beat a hundred of you by myself..."

Ming's father burped. He had only drunk half a cup of wine and was already drunk. He was completely different from the cold and sullen person he had shown when he first came in. He had a melancholy look on his face and turned into a chatterbox...

Zhuang Zhixi sat up straight, looking like he was willing to learn. Ming's father was still mumbling. Lan Ling glanced at her man, then at her son-in-law, and smiled meaningfully... She said, "Okay, just eat if you want to. Why are you trying to scare your son-in-law? I think he's a good son-in-law."

"Hmph, the old saying is right, the more the mother-in-law looks at her son-in-law, the more satisfied she is. I think you just don't have a stand." Ming's father took another sip, his eyes becoming more confused: "Anyway, anyway, if you bully my daughter, I'll come to your house with an axe to teach you a lesson..."

Zhuang Zhixi: "Okay, okay, okay, if I did anything wrong, please teach me."

Ming's father glared: "Do you still want to do badly?"

Zhuang Zhixi changed his words in a second: "I promise to do it well! Don't worry! You must rest assured! I will never give you the opportunity to teach me a lesson!"

Ming's father continued to glare at you: "I'm your father-in-law, and I can't even teach you a lesson?"

Zhuang Zhixi: "Sure, why not? You can teach me whatever you want, I will listen to you."

Ming's father: "...That's more like it."

Lan Ling: "Okay, are you done yet? Let's eat. Stop scaring your son-in-law."

Ming's father: "Humph!"

The Mingcheng couple pretended that they didn't exist.

Zhuang Zhixi wiped the non-existent sweat from his forehead and breathed a sigh of relief.

Mingmei looked at this and that, her eyes curved into little moons as she smiled...Zhuang Zhixi looked at her smile, kicked her with his foot, and said with his mouth: "Look at your man making fun of you! " Mingmei laughed even more happily.

Zhuang Zhixi: “???”

Ming's father raised his eyes: "...Why did you kick me?"

Mingmei finally couldn't help it: "Pfft, hahahaha~"

Zhuang Zhixi was stunned and laughed...

At the same time, Zhao Guihua was also muttering at home: "I wonder how that little bastard Zhuang Zhixi is doing today." After muttering, she sighed: "But this little bastard is shameless and can deal with his in-laws..."

Sizzle.

Suddenly there was a sound outside the door. Zhao Guihua raised her eyebrows, stood up and opened the window. She looked down and saw three "big rats" under the window...
