Chapter 34: First Encounter

The sun was setting, and the wasteland was a vast expanse. A light layer of snow had covered the ground a few days ago, casting a gloomy haze over this winter. Someone was about to freeze to death again.

The smoke columns in the city began to operate day after day. It was obvious that they could not go back to the past. The equipment was getting worse and worse. Although there were still some high-end goods in the outpost, they were of no use to small people like Kosen.

Today was also the day to go out and gather supplies! He scratched a mark on the wall, one a day. It had been several years since he started working to get this place. Gradually, the scratches had covered the entire wall. When would this life end?

Life was uncertain, and they lived under the daily threat of strange beasts, searching for the last vestiges of the past in this once-thriving wasteland. Often, they could only bring back a basket of metal to take to the outpost to repair their weapons and equipment.

Strange beasts don't often attack cities, but they like to hang out in their own activity areas. If you encounter one, you will die.

Kosen knew very well that his life had never been guaranteed. Once, a scavenger thought that the strange beast was not powerful, so he left the area around the camp. In order to find him back, Kosen, as the captain, was forced to chase him for a long distance. Then the two of them witnessed a group of giant beasts that were dozens of meters tall. In this world, that was only a middle-level beast.

Even for various reasons, Kosen still had to go out again. Somehow, he always felt that he might not succeed this time. As usual, he handed over the command to the grassroots and let them decide their own actions.

Then galloping alone in the wilderness.

The mechanical exoskeleton made a sound of lack of maintenance, but Cosen had gotten used to it. This sound was a symbol of peace of mind and security for him. Without it, it would be difficult for Cosen to remain calm.

Time ticked by, and Kosen drifted further and further from the city. This wouldn't have been a big deal in the past, as the farthest their expedition had reached was another city two thousand kilometers away. But for some reason, Kosen felt particularly uneasy today, as if he'd drunk too much Karin last night.

But last night, Kosen did nothing.

Where did this feeling come from? Kosen didn't know, but the gradually dropping temperature reminded him to turn on the heat. Because of his unease, Kosen only arranged for his team to patrol the city once and return at night. But his unease didn't subside; instead, it intensified. Suddenly, a team member's cry came over the radio. It was the person in charge of alert.

"A herd of strange beasts! A large herd of strange beasts! Hundreds!"

Large alien beasts are the largest alien beasts that human firepower can fight against, and hundreds of them are enough to turn the city into ruins.

What is very strange is that in the classification table that came out of the outpost, many large monsters were ranked at the third level, which means they were very low in danger. But in fact, any medium-sized monster could destroy Kosen's entire team.

And it was an overwhelming massacre. Did humans really ever stand a chance against something like that? Is that just myth?

"Damn! Which direction are they heading?" Kosen still held out a glimmer of hope. As long as they avoided the city, even just a little bit, reconstruction would still be possible and his life could continue.

"They won't pass through the city." The guard's tone was strange.

Kosen breathed a sigh of relief: "What's your name?"

"But we're in their path. At our speed, it's impossible for us to escape the impact range."

"..." Cosen never expected that when he was a child, he heard people who went out died every day. At that time, he just thought, "As long as it's not me, it's okay." Later, his parents stayed outside, and he came out. After so many years, he thought death had left him, but he didn't expect that the god of death would come to collect the mail so inexplicably.

"What kind?" Kosen still didn't want to die like this. He still hadn't done it for a long time and didn't have a wife.

"Flame-tailed Scorpion, I'm almost done. If anyone survives, please help me take care of my son." The voice became increasingly shrill, and then disappeared.

Kosen is full of it. The ground here is like it is paved with metal, which is ridiculously thick. No one on the plains can survive the biological tanks with the ability to spit fire.

An adult flame-tail scorpion can send flames hundreds of meters away, and its frontal carapace can block all weapons of Kosen's team without even leaving a trace.

Desperate, Kosen knew that they were doomed this time, and in the last few minutes, he had to find something to do to relieve the tension, and he would rather die like a hero than cry like a coward: "Attack them if you still have the courage! As long as we open a gap, we will have a chance to survive!" These words were more like persuading himself to make a meaningless struggle than to make people believe in following him to death.

"Ahhh!" Kosen rushed towards the enemy. At this distance, he could only see a dark mass on the horizon. That was the strongest and last enemy in his life.

"Quack, quack." A black bird flew over his head. "Do you need help?"

Kosen was stunned, and the script slowed down: "You can talk!?" It's a bird! Was I hallucinating? Was I actually still lying in bed sleeping? Was everything in front of me a dream?

"Of course not! I..." Kosen stopped bragging, realizing that the bird should be able to help him in his dream: "Help us quickly! After you help, I'll take you to eat insects!"

"Huh?" Courier 007 was stunned and took note: "The humans on this planet have become so miserable that they have to use insects to entertain guests from afar."

Looking at the bird, which seemed to be in deep thought, Kosen couldn't help but ask, "Don't you eat insects?"

"Yes, I eat meat." In fact, as long as the Courier has maintenance fluid to drink and alloy to chew, he can keep fighting forever, which is highly self-consistent. However, in order to maintain his bird-like personality, the Courier 007 had to say something that sounds like something a human would eat.

Kosen's heart twisted. Edible meat was not cheap, but it was just a dream anyway.

"Okay, eat meat! Eat big chunks!"

"Great." Kosen saw Brother Bird fly high into the sky and then spread his wings.

The tiny stars in the air gradually grew larger and connected, forming three rows of light networks distributed in a semicircle.

"Strike range locked, positioning, fire!"

Countless spears of light pierced through the clouds and flew along the trajectory towards the target area.

Because the size of the Raven UAV is limited, the "Hummingbird"-class artillery array does not have high-end precision strike capabilities, but is more of a covering strike, which is exactly what is most useful for the large number of Lih creations.
