Chapter 28 Mother's Home

When the two arrived at Yue's house, only Cheng's father and mother were there, waiting for them. Cheng's mother took the things and said, "You will stay here today. Your eldest brother will be back today as well."

Today is the second day of the Chinese New Year, so my eldest brother and sister-in-law must have gone back to her parents' home. My eldest sister-in-law's family conditions are not good, and there is no extra room for her to sleep in. Before she got married, she lived in the same room with her parents. My eldest sister-in-law has a younger brother who got married last year, so he has no place to live when he goes back.

Late in the afternoon, my eldest brother and sister-in-law came back with Feifei. My eldest sister-in-law was smiling the whole time. After asking, I found out that her younger sister-in-law was pregnant. This was a happy event, no wonder she had such a smile on her face.

Wang Yu had lived in Yue's house for a month before, and he often came here and had already become familiar with little Feifei. At this moment, he was playing tangram with Feifei, which was a gift Wang Yu brought for Feifei today. Tangram is a puzzle, an educational toy, very suitable for children around three years old.

Because her brother-in-law and son are coming back to her parents' home today, Cheng's mother prepared a large table of dishes to entertain them. Knowing that her brother-in-law likes to eat game, before the New Year, Cheng's mother specially asked Cheng Yang to go to the mountains to hunt two.

It is difficult to hunt animals in winter, so we hunt them before the snow falls. We keep the animals alive in cages, waiting for Cheng Chen and the others to come back and cook them today.

In the evening, Wang Yu and his wife stayed at Cheng's house. Wang Yu hugged Cheng Chen and asked, "It's your birthday in a few days. Is there anything you want?"

Wang Yu didn't know about Cheng Chen's birthday at first. It was when they were having dinner today and talking about Cheng Chen's childhood that he brought up this matter. He was still unconscious when he and Cheng Chen got married, and he had never seen the wedding invitation. After waking up, he couldn't remember his birthday. Fortunately, his birthday was on the eighth day of the first lunar month, so he hadn't celebrated it.

Cheng Chen shook his head. He really didn't want anything. He lacked nothing. He just wanted to be by his husband's side forever.

Wang Yu saw Cheng Chen shaking his head and said, "Then I'll prepare it myself, go to sleep!"

Although she didn't want anything, she was still very excited when her husband said he would prepare a gift for her. She found a comfortable position in Wang Yu's arms and fell asleep.

After staying at Cheng's house for one night, the two returned. The next day, Wang Yu went to the town again to prepare the things he wanted. There was nothing else to do. They had no relatives to visit, so they stayed at home, reading books, practicing calligraphy, and teaching Chen to read. Time passed quickly and it was the day agreed upon by Chuqi and Chen Yanwen.

Wang Yu went to visit Chen Yanwen at his home as agreed. When he arrived, he saw Chen Yanwen standing at the door looking out. When he saw Wang Yu, he said, "Brother Wang, you're finally here. I've been waiting at the door."

Wang Yu...

"Brother Chen, thank you for your hard work!" Wang Yu bowed and followed Chen Yanwen in. He gave the New Year gift to the maid. Wang Yu watched Chen Yanwen lead him to his study and asked if he wanted to visit his parents first.

"No, they went to my grandmother's place today. You sit here and have some tea. I'll go to the door to greet Brother Song."

Wang Yu looked around the study. On the left was a desk, behind it were bookshelves, and on the right was a meeting place and a soft couch.

Wang Yu stood up and walked to the desk. He saw a chapter of the Analects that Chen Yanwen had memorized. Just as he was about to see what books were on the bookshelf, he heard footsteps and Chen Yanwen's voice.

"What a coincidence! I ran into Brother Song just after I went out!" Chen Yanwen walked in following his voice.

"Come, come, sit down and drink this tea. My father specially asked someone to bring it back from the capital."

Wang Yu walked over, sat down, picked up the tea and took a sip. It had a soft taste and rich tea aroma. It was indeed better than the coarse tea roasted by farmers themselves.

After a while of talking, Chen Yanwen couldn't help but think of his parents and frowned in surprise. Wang Yu saw that he was thinking like this and thought that he might have something bothering him, so he asked him about it.

Chen Yan hadn't intended to say anything, but he felt uncomfortable holding it in. Seeing Wang Yu asking, he opened his mouth and said, "It's my grandmother. As a younger generation, I shouldn't talk about the affairs of my elders. But this matter involves me, and I feel really uncomfortable. I'm going to tell you about it today."

Wang Yu and the others then realized what was going on. It turned out to be about Chen Yanwen's marriage. When they went to his uncle's house to pay New Year's greetings on the first day of the new year, his grandmother wanted Chen Yanwen to marry her niece's granddaughter from her mother's side. Chen's mother refused, which offended the old lady. It was not convenient to scold her in front of others at that time, so she called her mother over today. Originally, she wanted Chen Yanwen to go as well, but Chen Yanwen refused on the grounds that he was a classmate.

Chen Yanwen: "It's just embarrassing for my mother. Grandmother doesn't like my mother anyway."

After hearing this, they realized that there was another story behind this. His grandmother had wanted Chen's father to marry her niece from her mother's side. However, Chen's father was concerned about Chen Yanwen's mother at the time, so he had a falling out with his family and would never marry the person his grandmother mentioned. In the end, he was almost kicked out of the house.

After marrying his mother, he opened a pastry shop in this town. We rarely visited each other during normal times, and only went back to visit during the Chinese New Year.

"Didn't my mother say before that I would get married after I passed the imperial examination? My grandmother mentioned it the year before last, and my mother refused on the grounds that I wanted to pass the imperial examination. But I didn't pass last year, so she mentioned it again during the Chinese New Year this year. My mother said that my grandmother said some unpleasant things at that time."

In fact, he also knew what was said roughly. It was just a comparison between him and his cousin from his uncle's family. It should be about whether he should give up studying if he is not good at studying, get married soon and focus on his studies.

Chen Yanwen complained, "You said that all the women on my grandmother's side are celestial beings, and why did you insist on my father and I marry them?"

Wang Yu and Song Boyan didn't expect this to happen. Since it involved their family's private affairs, they couldn't say anything and could only comfort him.

"Don't worry, as long as your uncle and aunt don't agree, your grandmother can't force you to marry her."
