When Dabao was one year and two months old, he could already walk. At first, the adults led him by the hand with a cloth belt or pushed him in a walker. Later, when he could walk slowly, they let go and let him walk by himself.
Ever since he learned to walk, he has been reluctant to stay in the fence. The fence is too small and has restricted his movements. During the day, Cheng Lichen lets him walk in the house. His little legs move very fast. The floor is covered with carpets, so there is no need to worry about him falling. This guy doesn't cry when he falls, but gets up and continues walking by himself. He just needs someone to watch him and not let him go to the brazier, for fear of burning him.
This year they returned home a few days later than usual. It snowed a few days ago, and they didn't get home until the 25th. Fortunately, his parents saw that the weather was bad and went back early to make preparations.
When Dabao was two months old last year, he mostly slept in the carriage. Now that he is over one year old, he sleeps much less. On weekdays, he takes a nap in the morning and another in the afternoon. But today, he had to stay awake all morning in the carriage, which was very novel. He didn’t fall asleep until noon because he couldn’t hold it anymore. Wang Yu held him in his arms as he slept. Maybe it was because the carriage was shaking, so he slept until we got home and woke up.
Cheng Chen got off the carriage first. When he took Dabao, he saw that he was squinting his eyes and was about to wake up. He looked so cute. He kissed him on the cheek. Thinking that he had slept for quite some time, he stood him up and held him to wake him up so that he could sleep again at night. The little guy slowly opened his sleepy eyes.
Dabao woke up and didn't make a fuss in his father's arms. Normally, if he woke up in his crib and found that no one was there, he would cry. He was a very well-behaved child when he was young, but he became more and more difficult to take care of as he grew older. It turns out that he is a boy with a bad temper.
Dabao looked at this place curiously in his father's arms. He had been here last year, but his little head certainly didn't remember it.
"Our Dabao is back." When Wang's mother heard the noise outside, she knew that Wang Yu and the others had returned. She came out to pick up her darling grandson. She missed him very much after not seeing him for a few days, so she hugged him tightly. Wang's father didn't even let her hug him when he wanted to.
Aunt Li from next door just came back from outside, holding a lot of tofu in her hands. When she saw Wang Yu and the others, she came forward to say hello. She was also very curious to see Dabao was so white and chubby. She went up to hug him, but when she saw the things in her hands, she gave up and just talked for a while.
"Did you go buy tofu today?" Queen Mother asked her. She had already bought some in the morning. Someone in the village was making tofu.
Aunt Li: "Well, let's fry some tofu balls tomorrow for the New Year. I went there late today and didn't buy many. Xiaolan said she would make a few more tomorrow and leave a few more for me."
The Chinese New Year is approaching, and every household has started preparing for the New Year. Aunt Li was even happier when she thought that her brother had given birth to a big fat boy this year. She brought some things to see him last time. In the past two years, both of them have worked in the shop and have saved some extra money. Their lives have become better and better. Now that they have a child, their life is harmonious and happy. It is all thanks to the Wang family. The smile on her face became more obvious.
Li An was born in September this year, just a few days after Xiao Shitou. She was also working when she was pregnant. Embroidery is not a strenuous job, it is a sitting job, so it doesn't hurt to do it. After all, you won't get paid if you take leave.
This year their wages increased by 900 wen per month, so they did not quit their jobs after having a child. They returned to their hometown to give birth when the child was nine months old. Tian Li also took leave to go back with them. After the child was born, Cheng Chen went back to see him when he was one month old. He was a very healthy boy who looked very much like Tian Li.
Aunt Li talked for a while at home and then went back. Now they talked about what to prepare for the New Year. The family members also discussed together what else was missing for the New Year.
"Let's go buy some more spare ribs, chop them into small pieces and stew them until they're tender. Dabao can have a piece too, just to try the flavor."
The town was bustling with activity as the New Year was approaching. Wang Yu and Cheng Chen hadn't been around town for a long time and planned to go shopping tomorrow. Seeing that they wanted to go, Wang's mother said, "If you see any eggs for sale, remember to buy some. I didn't find any the other day. Few people sell eggs in winter. If there aren't any, I'll ask if anyone in the village can give me some, and bring back some sesame oil."
In winter, the weather is cold and chickens lay fewer eggs. Farmers who are doing well will keep them for the New Year. They haven't raised poultry since they moved to the provincial capital. This year, Dabao can eat some egg custard, so they must buy some.
Wang Yu nodded in agreement. It wasn't too cold in the afternoon, so he left Dabao in the yard to play by himself. He was wearing thick clothes, and it was difficult for his short legs to walk, so he was covered in dust in a short while. Fortunately, the bricks in the yard were covered with dust but no mud.
Cheng Chen couldn't stand it anymore, so he picked him up and wanted to go in to change his clothes. Dabao was unwilling to do so and kept crying for more fun. Wang Yu thought that since his clothes were already dirty, he might as well play for a while. Cheng Chen glared at Wang Yu and said that he always spoiled Dabao, and what would happen when he grew up?
Wang Yu smiled and said, "He's still young now. When he grows up, I'll be a strict father and won't let him grow up astray."
The next day, after breakfast, the two of them prepared to go to town. Dabao saw that his father and grandfather seemed to be going out, so he lay on Cheng Chen and refused to get down. He pointed his little hand outside, indicating that he wanted to go too. They had no choice but to take him with them. Queen Mother told them to take good care of Dabao and let them go.
The town was not far away and they arrived there quickly by carriage. They parked the carriage at the entrance of the town and walked over. They had been strolling around the streets of the provincial capital for the past two years and had not been to the town for a long time. There was not much difference from the previous two years, except that it was almost the New Year and the streets were more lively.
Cheng Chen was in high spirits while shopping, and Dabao was also very excited to see so many people. His little eyes were darting around, and he was pointing at things in the shops and shouting "ah!". Wang Yu bought a rice cake from the stall and asked him to eat it. The rice cake was still fragrant, soft and a little sweet, and only as big as Dabao's palm, just the right size for him to hold.
