Chapter 20 Fire and Seedlings

The next day, Chen Yang and Li Su'er entered the micro-world on time again.

Jiang Yining and Wang Bing already knew about their situation, but there was nothing they could do to help. Chen Yang and Li Su'er had to rely on themselves to get out of trouble.

Instead of immediately leaving the forest, they searched the area around the pool. If Jiang Yining were here, she would definitely be able to recognize many edible plants. Chen Yang and the others did not have that ability, but they could still recognize a few.

For example, firethorn berries, a type of small red fruit, were found in a clump on an open ground dozens of meters away from the pool.

"This time it was a really bumper harvest, with both meat and vegetables."

Li Su'er said happily as she picked the fruit.

Chen Yang nodded and said, "Deer are not just for eating; we should make good use of them. Deer hides can be made into clothing, so we should get some nicer clothes. We can't keep wearing grass skirts like this every day."

Li Su'er nodded in agreement and said, "Let's make one pair of underwear for each person. I can't stand going braless every day. Clothes can only be worn by one person, so underwear is more practical."

When the topic came up, Li Su'er didn't seem embarrassed at all; on the contrary, Chen Yang blushed a little.

However, Li Su'er's suggestion was very practical. This was a problem that had to be faced. Sometimes when Chen Yang sat down, he was afraid that his little Chen would accidentally be exposed.

After gathering the wild fruits, they began preparing to make torches.

Making a torch that could support them to reach the edge of the forest was no easy task. Chen Yang researched a lot of information before summarizing some experience.

They wrapped some flammable material around sticks with tree bark, then pried apart several different kinds of trees before finding a type of resin that could aid combustion. This was thanks to Chen Yang's book, "The Sacred Flame," which contained many techniques for starting fires using resin, so he knew which trees' resins could be used to make torches.

The two men used tree bark to hang the sika deer upside down on a stick, carrying it by one end and the other by the tail, while holding torches in their other hands, and slowly walked out of the forest.

They left markers along the way, so they didn't get lost.

The forest was very dense, and the sun could only cast dappled rays, making the flames appear exceptionally bright, which made Chen Yang and Li Su'er feel much safer.

“I think I heard some sounds, Chen Yang,” Li Su’er said nervously.

Chen Yang comforted him, "It's alright, we have fire and weapons, and we can also revive."

Li Su'er knew she could be resurrected, but she still felt fear. After all, she was just a girl; no matter how brave she was, she would still feel fear when faced with the threat of death.

Chen Yang was the same, but Li Su'er's presence emboldened him a bit. He would tell himself that he was a man and had to protect women.

Call it male chauvinism or pride, whatever it is, it gave Chen Yang the courage to face danger.

Several wolf howls echoed from the jungle, and several figures appeared in front of them, causing the two men to become serious.

Three gray wolves appeared in front of them, and then one or two gray wolves appeared behind and in front of them.

"Su'er, don't panic, walk slowly, don't rush," Chen Yang said.

Li Su'er obediently hummed in agreement, and then followed Chen Yang forward.

Chen Yang noticed that of the three wolves in front of them, one was clearly standing in front of the other two, and he guessed that this might be the alpha wolf.

Chen Yang held the torch in front of him and walked forward with firm steps, neither hurried nor slow.

The wolves circled around the two men, keeping a close watch on them. If it weren't for the torches, they would likely have already attacked.

Although Chen Yang had already cleaned up the deer carcass and it was no longer bleeding, it was still undoubtedly emitting a bloody smell. Humans couldn't detect this odor, but it wouldn't be difficult for a pack of wolves to smell it. This was why they were relentlessly pursuing the two men.

"Keep going."

Chen Yang noticed that Li Su'er was trembling and her steps were unsteady, so he whispered, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."

After hearing this, Li Su'er looked up at Chen Yang's back and her fear dissipated considerably. The figure holding the torch in front of her seemed so warm and reliable at that moment.

"It's unfair that he's so handsome," she muttered in a barely audible whisper.

"What?"

"It's nothing, let's go. These wolves don't seem to dare to come up."

“Yes, they are afraid of fire, and they are also afraid of us, so we can’t let them know that we are afraid,” Chen Yang said.

The two men faced off against the wolf pack, slowly approaching the edge of the forest.

However, a very bad situation occurred: their torch flames were getting smaller and smaller.

"Fire dry wood on the ground; it will last longer. Be quick."

While keeping a watchful eye on the wolves, Chen Yang slowly bent down to pick up the wood, as did Li Su'er.

"Aww!"

Just then, the gray wolves on their flanks pounced, and the rest of the wolves also made a move. Only the alpha wolf stood still and watched.

"Get out of my way!"

Chen Yang suddenly smashed the torch into the wolf's body.

"Waaaaah~~"

The gray wolf let out a pitiful howl, and the other wolves stopped abruptly, staring at Chen Yang in fear.

Chen Yang's torch was extinguished by the blow, but he rekindled it with Li Su'er's torch, raised his stone axe with one hand, and roared at the alpha wolf:

"Come here!"

He stared at the alpha wolf, his eyes filled with ferocity.

The alpha wolf growled at Chen Yang, its gaze lingering on Chen Yang's torch, wavering slightly. At that moment, Chen Yang lit a small clump of dry grass beside it.

The hay burned quickly, causing the wolves to howl. Chen Yang could sense their fear.

The alpha wolf finally gave the order to retreat, and the pack quickly disappeared into the jungle.

Chen Yang breathed a sigh of relief, then quickly extinguished the flames on the ground; he didn't want to cause a forest fire.

Fire is indeed the natural enemy of animals, and the ability to use fire is one of the major reasons why humans have been able to surpass all animals. Especially for primitive societies, fire was a gift from the gods. Many tribal beliefs were related to fire.

"Su'er, are you alright?"

"fine."

"Let's go then. The wolf pack shouldn't be coming back, but we still need to be careful."

"Um."

Chen Yang didn't notice that Li Su'er suddenly became quieter, and even if he had, he would have just assumed that Li Su'er was frightened.

The two continued carrying the sika deer forward. Chen Yang walked in front, so he didn't know that Li Su'er's gaze was fixed on him, and that her eyes seemed different from before, with a hint of indescribable emotion.

They made it out of the forest without incident and returned to the sun-drenched meadow, where the whole world seemed to brighten up at that moment.

When they approached the cabin, Jiang Yining and Wang Bing were already waiting.

"Little Ningning, give me a hug! I'm telling you, the way we confronted the wolf pack just now was so cool! You didn't see me like that..."

Li Su'er rushed up and gave Jiang Yining a bear hug, while Wang Bing's eyes were fixed on the deer carcass.

Chen Yang and Li Su'er recounted what had happened to the two of them. Of course, it was mostly Li Su'er who did the talking, and Chen Yang only pulled her back when she was about to go off-topic, adding a few true details without embellishment.

When Li Su'er got excited, she would pull Chen Yang to demonstrate, and Chen Yang could only cooperate helplessly.

Jiang Yining seemed to sense something and stared at Li Su'er with a smile. Li Su'er turned her head away guiltily and continued to pull Chen Yang to perform her "battle against a pack of wolves" scene.
