Chapter 21 Encountering Tian Qiao's Base
Cheng Zhiyu took a moment to process what Xiao Hei meant when he said that the noise wasn't coming from a zombie, but from a human.
The fact that it wasn't a zombie relieved Cheng Zhiyu; in fact, he was quite happy. Since the apocalypse, he hadn't encountered a single person, and now he had finally met someone.
Looking at Cheng Zhiyu's happy expression, Xiao Hei felt a little uncomfortable for some reason. He said, "You're so happy, you're not thinking of going to find them, are you?"
He put eye drops on Cheng Zhiyu: "I don't think those two humans are good people."
Cheng Zhiyu chuckled: "You can't tell just by looking at it?"
Xiao Hei glared at him.
Cheng Zhiyu rubbed the dog's head and whispered, "Don't worry, I'm not stupid."
He was simply happy to see humans in the apocalypse, after all, they were his fellow human beings. But he also knew that, just as before the apocalypse, not everyone was necessarily a good person, let alone in the apocalypse where survival was so precarious.
So, as happy as he was, he didn't plan to go out and say hello. The two people had come looking for supplies, and he couldn't take anything from here anyway, so it was best to leave each other alone.
From afar, Cheng Zhiyu saw two burly men. One of them had a red birthmark on his face, which looked rather frightening, while the other had a scar on his eyebrow and also looked quite fierce.
The scarred man calls the man with the red birthmark "Red Face," while the man calls him "Old Knife."
"There aren't many zombies here; it's probably been cleared out." The red-faced man held a knife in his hand and looked around.
Old Dao's eyes darted greedily over the items on the shelves: "If they don't have them, great! That's a bargain for us!"
As he spoke, he eagerly tore open a bag of the latest potato chips and began to wolf them down.
A hint of disgust flashed in the red-faced man's eyes upon seeing this, but he was also hungry, so he swallowed and started eating as well.
The two of them would eat whatever they saw. Sometimes, they would be halfway through what they were eating when they spotted something else delicious, so they would immediately drop what they were eating and go eat the next one.
In no time, he had made a mess of the area.
Little Black's claws hardened at the sight; he loved eating all of these, and those two annoying creatures were really...
Cheng Zhiyu also frowned as he watched. His thinking was simple: with resources scarce, every bite of food was precious, so how could they be wasted like this?
Even if you can't take it with you, wouldn't it be better to leave it for the people who come later? After being ruined by Red Face and Old Knife, the things lying on the ground are obviously inedible.
Fortunately, the two of them had finally finished eating and lay down comfortably on the ground. Looking at all the food left in the supermarket, it felt like they had arrived in heaven.
Old Dao said, "I'd like to stay here and never leave."
Redface said, "Didn't you hear the boss say we're going to the bread farm?"
Old Dao scoffed, "What base? Do you think a base would have this much food and drink?"
Redface was clearly more rational: "At least the base is safe, and we're both superhumans, so we won't have to worry about food and drink there. Besides, this supermarket has a lot of stuff, but can you be sure that others won't find us here? Can we hold it off? I'm afraid we'll lose our lives."
Hearing this, Lao Dao had no choice but to abandon his idea of staying. Instead, he said, "Shall we go back and tell the boss about this place? The boss will definitely consider it a great achievement for us!"
The red-faced man was clearly the more astute one; he had his own thoughts and immediately said, "No way! If the boss and the others find out about this, will we still be able to eat as freely as we did before?"
Old Dao thought about it and agreed, then hesitated, "What should we do?"
“Let’s take less stuff back with us. We’ll just say it was a difficult place to find this place. Didn’t the boss say we need to rest here for a few days? Let’s come over every day and eat our fill.” Of course, Red Face wasn’t just after that, but there was no need to explain it so clearly to Old Knife.
Old Dao was purely wicked and naive. Hearing him say that, he thought it was a good idea: "You're so smart! Let's do it that way!"
As he spoke, he began to complain again: "I don't know why the boss brought so many ordinary people along. They're just holding us back. If it weren't for them, we would have reached the bread farm long ago."
Redface clearly knew more than him, and mumbled, "The boss has his own uses, so don't overthink it."
Cheng Zhiyu, who was not far away, listened for a while and gleaned a lot of useful information. At least he knew that there was a safe base and that the group's destination was that bread base.
According to them, the bread base treats people with superpowers very well.
Currently, the survivors are divided into those with superpowers and ordinary people. Those with superpowers should be like the zombies, possessing various superpowers, while ordinary people are the same as before the apocalypse.
Cheng Zhiyu knew that he shouldn't be considered a superhuman, so he should try to avoid contact with superhumans in the future to avoid them noticing anything amiss. Even if he did have contact with them, he would have to hide himself.
His plants are so special.
After Red Face and Old Knife left, it was almost dark. Cheng Zhiyu took Xiao Hei out of the mall, found the motorcycle he had hidden, and set off to find Tian Qiao.
The motorcycle was much faster, and Cheng Zhiyu's current goal wasn't to kill zombies. He wasn't too far from Tian Qiao's district, so he should be able to get there soon.
The small motorcycle he chose wasn't very loud when he rode it, and its design was more like an electric motorcycle, so it wouldn't make a racket like a motorcycle.
If that were the case, Cheng Zhiyu wouldn't ride it. After all, zombies are attracted not only by smell but also by sound, and he didn't want to attract all the nearby zombies.
He rode his bike, and as for Xiao Hei, Cheng Zhiyu made a small nest for him in the place where he could put his things on the front of the motorcycle. Although the place was not big, it was spacious enough for Xiao Hei, which was only a little bigger than a human hand, so that he could lie comfortably in it.
Unfortunately, Xiao Hei didn't want to lie down, so it lay inside Cheng Zhiyu's clothes, with only its head sticking out.
Cheng Zhiyu smiled and said, "Xiao Hei isn't lying down because he wants to keep me company, right?"
Xiao Hei turned his head away: No, that's not it.
He didn't refute, so Cheng Zhiyu took it as true and showered him with compliments, saying things like "Xiao Hei is so considerate" and "How can there be such a good dog as Xiao Hei?" He just kept saying these things until Xiao Hei shrank its head into his clothes and wouldn't come out again.
Cheng Zhiyu: "Hahaha."
Xiao Hei: So cheesy!
——
Cheng Zhiyu was riding a bike, which was definitely much faster than walking. If he encountered a zombie, he wouldn't even need to lift a finger. Xiao Hei would leisurely throw out a water ball, and the zombie would be pulverized.
Sometimes when Xiao Hei is too lazy to do anything, he lets Xiao Er do it. He has now learned to command Xiao Er without being taught, and surprisingly, Xiao Er listens to him quite well. The dog and the plant work together quite well.
If there are obstacles on the road, Xiao Hei will also use water balloons to clear them away.
In short, Cheng Zhiyu only needs to ride his bike and doesn't need to worry about anything else.
The journey was smooth, and soon they arrived at the district where Tian Qiao lived. However, it was still some distance from Tian Qiao's residence.
Cheng Zhiyu hesitated, wondering whether he should continue his journey tomorrow during the day. Based on his understanding of Tian Qiao, if she was alright, she would definitely come looking for him.
He was afraid that if he acted at night, he would miss Tian Qiao.
In this post-apocalyptic world, there are no communication tools available, so if you miss one, it will be very difficult to find another.
Just as Cheng Zhiyu was struggling with his decision, Xiao Hei patted him with its paw: "There's a horde of zombies ahead."
Cheng Zhiyu immediately snapped out of his daze, stopped his motorcycle, and sure enough, saw a group of zombies ahead. Moreover, it seemed that the group of zombies did not gather spontaneously... There were probably level one zombies among them.
Judging from the appearance of those zombies, someone must have been surrounded inside.
Cheng Zhiyu didn't hesitate. Since he had encountered this situation, he decided to help. He called out to Xiao Tie, and instantly a crossbow appeared in his hand.
At this moment, Tian Qiao was almost completely exhausted in the middle of the zombie horde.
The apocalypse came too suddenly, but luckily he stayed at home and escaped unharmed. He then developed a high fever, and when he woke up again, he had superpowers.
Tian Qiao is an ice-type. When he first discovered that he had superpowers, he was quite surprised. After gradually accepting it, he began to try using his superpowers.
After two months, he was finally ready and decided to leave the rented apartment to go find Cheng Zhiyu.
Who knew that it would take him a whole month to get from where he lived to where he was? Because of the zombies, it took him a whole month. Recently, it has been getting hotter and hotter during the day. Although he is an ice-type, he still feels uncomfortable and has decided to travel at night.
Who would have thought that tonight would bring such bad luck? In Tian Qiao's mind, zombies were a group of slow-moving and stupid creatures.
He was quite lucky; he hadn't encountered a single Level 1 zombie along the way, and because he hadn't had much contact with others, he didn't even know Level 1 zombies existed until today.
As it turned out, his good luck for the night had run out. He had only walked a short distance when he encountered zombies. He killed one, but a group of them appeared. Gradually, more and more zombies appeared around him, and Tian Qiao finally vaguely sensed that something was wrong.
There was nothing he could do but keep killing zombies, but they seemed to keep coming. He was exhausted, and the number of zombies was still terrifying. Moreover, he was surrounded, and the encirclement was getting smaller and smaller.
Tian Qiao had a vague feeling that he was probably going to die today. He thought of his parents, who only had him as their child. He wondered how much they would cry if they found out.
And then there's Orange. Don't let his quiet demeanor fool you; he's got a soft heart. He'll probably be crying his eyes out too.
Thinking this, Tian Qiao looked at the group of zombies and cursed, "Damn it, let's fight one-on-one if you dare!"
Obviously, zombies wouldn't be so moral. Tian Qiao gritted his teeth, looking at the ugly zombies. If he got bitten, he might become one of them. Rather than that, he'd rather deal with it himself!
Just then, an arrow shot over, piercing the head of one of the zombies in the horde. The zombie seemed to have just realized it was being attacked, and tried to set off a ball of fire towards the incoming arrow. Unfortunately for it, the small iron arrow was not affected by the fire and continued to shoot at the fire-type zombie, finishing it off with a single arrow.
The horde of zombies surrounding Tian Qiao immediately loosened their grip. Tian Qiao: "!"
No, no, who wants to die when they can live?
He still needs to keep his life to repay his savior!
