Chapter 5 The Little Black Dog's Little Shop

Chapter 5 The Little Black Dog's Little Shop

Cheng Zhiyu pressed himself against the door, peering through the peephole. He could confirm that after the zombie was burned to death by Xiao Er, no other zombies appeared outside the door.

He was engrossed in his observation when he suddenly felt something warm poking his ear. Cheng Zhiyu turned his head and saw Xiao Er, who was perched on his shoulder, sneakily retracting the leaf, pretending that he hadn't done it.

"Why are you so naughty?" Cheng Zhiyu suppressed a laugh and turned to look at Xiao Er.

Xiao Er nervously shook his leaf, then nuzzled Cheng Zhiyu ingratiatingly.

Cheng Zhiyu, wearing a mask and hat, with only his eyes showing, smiled and poked Xiao Er's leaf: "Alright, let's go."

The waiter shook the branches and leaves, and the whole plant stood up very straight. Although the plant had no expression, it looked particularly serious.

Cheng Zhiyu curled his lips, then exhaled, opened the door of the rented room, cautiously looked outside, and then went out with Xiao Er on his shoulder.

He didn't forget to close the door, after all, he would be coming back.

Stepping out the door, facing the elevator, Cheng Zhiyu decided to take the stairs. He walked quietly, turned left, and then walked straight until he arrived at the stairwell, which was blocked by a door.

Holding his breath, he pushed open the door. Fortunately, just as he had guessed, there were rarely any people in the stairwell, not to mention that the zombie virus was most likely to appear in the middle of the night, and no one would climb the stairs in the middle of the night.

The staircase was completely empty at this moment; there wasn't a single zombie in sight.

However, Cheng Zhiyu remained vigilant, holding the kitchen knife and descending the stairs quietly. At each corner of the stairs, he would cautiously glance down before continuing.

All the floors he walked to were five, and he had no trouble getting through. After walking for a short while, he arrived at the exit on the first floor.

This time he wasn't so lucky. Before he could even open the exit door, he heard the roars of zombies, and it sounded like there was more than one.

Fortunately, Cheng Zhiyu was mentally prepared. He simply gripped the cleaver handle tighter and turned to look at the waiter, who silently shook the branches.

Cheng Zhiyu swallowed hard and pushed the exit door open a crack. The zombies seemed to sense the presence of living people and immediately roared and pounced on him after he opened the emergency exit door.

He perked up and immediately called out, "Waiter!"

In an instant, Xiao Er transformed into a fireball and hurled it at the oncoming zombie, which screamed in agony.

Cheng Zhiyu did not relax. He glanced outside and could see that, apart from the zombie that Xiao Er was burning, there were two other zombies.

They appeared to be a man and a woman in life; the woman was still wearing a skirt. Judging from the degree of decay on their faces, they were perhaps among the earliest zombies.

Their rotting faces were so bad that they were unrecognizable from their former selves; one of the men's eyeballs had fallen out of its socket.

"Ugh!" Cheng Zhiyu vomited physiologically while dodging the two zombies and rushing behind them.

Before the two zombies could react, he gripped the cleaver and chopped at the head of the nearest male zombie. With a clang, the cleaver struck the skull, making a tooth-grinding sound.

Cheng Zhiyu used almost all his strength this time, but he underestimated the hardness of the zombie's head. The male zombie, under attack, looked like it was about to turn around and bite him.

The female zombie, too, sensed the wonderful presence of the living and wanted to turn around.

Without thinking twice, Cheng Zhiyu immediately picked up a kitchen knife and, with all his might, frantically chopped off the male zombie's head.

He was still somewhat burdened by the thought that even though the person in front of him was a zombie, they still retained the characteristics of a human being. As a young man who grew up in a peaceful society, he had absolutely no experience in chopping off people's heads.

But after being slashed several times and having to dodge the claws and bites of two zombies, he was completely numb.

As the male zombie's movements became increasingly sluggish, before Cheng Zhiyu could completely kill it, the female zombie beside him reached out with her grayish-white fingernails and grabbed at it.

Cheng Zhiyu's heart tightened, and he dodged sharply, his back hitting the wall. He ignored the pain because the female zombie pounced on him again.

He was completely cornered and had no way to escape. He thought he was going to die here today. Almost instantly, a fireball came crashing down, and the female zombie's hair was ignited. She screamed in pain and instantly lost her ability to attack.

Ignoring everything else, Cheng Zhiyu used the kitchen knife to slash at the male zombie again. Finally, after he slashed at the zombie dozens of times, the male zombie fell to the ground and became still.

He then came to his senses and found himself covered in cold sweat and his legs were weak. He leaned against the wall to rest while observing his surroundings to see if there were any other zombies.

Fortunately, there were none in the lobby. Cheng Zhiyu immediately went to the entrance of the building and closed the large iron gate to prevent the zombies from being attracted by the scent of living people. At least the large iron gate could keep the zombies out.

He had already used up most of his strength to kill that male zombie. If a few more came, even with Xiao Er by his side, he would still be finished here.

Cheng Zhiyu glanced at the kitchen knife in his hand; the blade was broken. It seemed that not only did his physical fitness need improvement, but his weapon also needed work.

The female zombie had already been burned to death by Xiao Er. Cheng Zhiyu called it back and immediately strode towards his destination—the small shop.

The shop was located in a resident's home, and Cheng Zhiyu was initially worried about how to get in, and what he would offer in exchange if the shop owner survived.

However, the shop's door was wide open, clearly indicating that the owner was already...

If Cheng Zhiyu remembered correctly, this small shop was run by a husband and wife. As for those two just now... He didn't want to think about it too much. He immediately led the waiter into the shop, carefully checked every corner, and after confirming that there were no zombies, he closed the shop door.

He carried a backpack; although it was a small shop, it was filled with a wide variety of items, and one backpack was clearly not enough to hold them all.

However, a thought struck him, and he said to the system, "Isn't there some storage space for my newbie rewards?"

[The host has 1 cubic meter of storage space. Do you wish to use it?]

One cubic meter may not seem like much, but it can hold quite a lot of things.

Cheng Zhiyu: "Yes."

[Storage space has been activated. Please explore it yourself.]

As soon as he finished speaking, Cheng Zhiyu noticed a change. He felt a warmth on the inside of his left wrist, and upon closer inspection, he saw a red mole there.

He was quite certain that he hadn't had this mole on his wrist before.

Thinking of something, he tentatively touched the red mole and saw a one-cubic-meter storage space, which was empty.

This must be the storage space rewarded by the system. It looks like it can hold quite a lot of things, at least much bigger than his backpack.

I just don't know how to put the things back...

Cheng Zhiyu walked up to the 5-liter bottle of mineral water that he had spotted as soon as he came in, tentatively put his hand on it, thinking about putting the item back into his storage space. The next moment, the mineral water disappeared into thin air.

"This is amazing!" He widened his eyes slightly. If he hadn't checked the storage space and found the mineral water inside, he probably would have thought he was seeing things.

Without wasting any more time, Cheng Zhiyu collected all the water he could find in the small shop. If he used it sparingly, it would be enough for him to eat and drink for at least two months.

While packing, he discovered something amazing: this cubic meter of space was not the space he had imagined.

Well, in reality, a space of one cubic meter cannot hold a thing that is one cubic meter in size.

For example, if you put a bucket of water in, and then put other things in, the space will be limited. Nothing can fit perfectly into the remaining space, so there will inevitably be gaps.

But the system's storage space is different; it can truly store as much as it can hold.

It was completely packed without any gaps, and even though the items were compressed inside the space, when Cheng Zhiyu took them out to check, he found that they were still intact.

After marveling once again at the system's wonders, Cheng Zhiyu continued to fill it with things.

Besides water, I prioritized packing food, but unfortunately the small shop only had snacks, instant noodles, and some bread.

But given the current situation, there's no room for choice; anything edible will do.

Fortunately, he found an unopened bag of flour in the kitchen next to the small shop, some vegetables in the refrigerator, some eggs, and a large piece of beef! It looked to weigh more than three pounds!

This is enough to last a long time!

The power supply has not been affected so far, and the food in the refrigerator is still in good condition.

These things were probably meant for the shop owner's own consumption, but now he's actually getting a good deal.

Cheng Zhiyu was both happy and conflicted. He put the eggs, vegetables, and beef into his spatial storage, but found it was full, so he simply carried the flour in his hand.

Thinking of the frozen beef, Cheng Zhiyu asked the system, "By the way, does this storage space have a preservation function?"

[Currently in basic storage space, this function is not yet available.]

Cheng Zhiyu wasn't too disappointed. He was more focused on the words "not available at the moment," which meant that just because it wasn't available now didn't mean it wouldn't be available in the future!

It seems I still need to work harder on farming.

Filled with hope, Cheng Zhiyu grabbed a bag of vegetable seeds, thought for a moment, and picked it up. He had an idea to try it out later.

After doing all this, they opened the door of the small shop, only to find a zombie outside. However, having gained experience, Cheng Zhiyu was not alarmed and quickly worked with the waiter to deal with the zombie.

Fortunately, he closed the door of the apartment building, and the zombies outside were indeed lured in, frantically banging on the door.

Cheng Zhiyu ignored him and planned to go back quickly.

However, after taking only two steps, he saw a small, furry black dog lying not far away. The dog was lying on the ground, its eyes closed and very quiet, with only its small, undulating body indicating that it was still breathing.

Judging by its size, this dog is probably only about a month old.

Cheng Zhiyu was certain that there were no dogs here when he first arrived, so where did this dog come from?

He hesitated for a moment, then walked towards the puppy.
