Chapter 24 The Team of Superpowered Individuals: They're Willing to Take in Ordinary People
Old Dao glanced at the few ordinary people behind him, his eyes filled with disdain. But when he turned to look at the man in front of him, his eyes were filled with admiration and flattery.
"Boss, the small supermarket I found is just ahead." In fact, he had already eaten a lot of the food in the small supermarket. He felt that was enough and left a little bit before bringing the other person over.
The person who became famous online after being linked to a gossip-eating system and was called "boss" was a slightly chubby man who looked to be around ten years old and had a somewhat slick appearance. Even in the apocalypse, he still had his hair slicked back with hair gel from who knows where.
Before the apocalypse, he was just a low-level employee at a company with a stable job, but he never had the opportunity for promotion. Who knew that when he woke up, the apocalypse would come.
At first, he was a little panicked, but after he awakened his superpower and discovered that he no longer had to follow the old rules in the apocalypse, he became excited instead.
The end times, aren't they also an opportunity?
He took a drag of his cigarette, nodded, clearly satisfied with Old Knife, and was about to go inside when he sensed something, frowned, dropped his cigarette, and his eyes sharpened: "Brothers inside, stop hiding."
Cheng Zhiyu raised an eyebrow slightly. Although he hadn't intended to hide, it was clear that this boss was someone who could be a boss, and was much more vigilant than the others.
He and Tian Qiao exchanged a glance, then he tucked Xiao Hei into his clothes, and the two of them left the supermarket together.
When Lao Dao saw that someone had actually come out, his face turned fierce, especially when he saw Cheng Zhiyu and Tian Qiao, the two pretty boys. His fierceness intensified: "You two are blind! Don't you know I was here first? This is my territory!"
There were several other superhumans beside Lao Dao, all staring wide-eyed at the two of them.
In the apocalypse, resources are scarce. Even a piece of bread can cause people to fight to the death for it, let alone the fact that Old Knife said there is still plenty of food here.
They looked at Cheng Zhiyu and Tian Qiao's bulging backpacks and their expressions turned grim: "Leave your things behind, and we'll spare your lives!"
Tian Qiao also had a fiery temper: "What, is your name written here? How did it become your territory? I'll say what you have is mine, are you going to give it to me or not?"
"You!" One of the superhumans was about to make a move when the leader looked at Tian Qiao, his eyes flickering, and raised his hand, saying, "Stop. What this young man said makes a lot of sense. Everyone has a hard time in this world, especially these two young men, who are alone in this apocalypse. They have it even harder than us. What kind of behavior is it for you to come up here shouting for violence?"
Having been taught a lesson, the man could only reluctantly withdraw his hand.
The leader walked up to Tian Qiao with a smile and offered his hand: "My name is Li Renyi. Among these people, I'm considered to have some influence. They were rude just now, so I apologize to you on their behalf."
Seeing that his attitude was good, Tian Qiao's expression softened, and she reached out to shake his hand.
Li Renyi then looked at Cheng Zhiyu, but did not reach out: "Young brothers, it is fate that we met here. Our group wants to go to the bread base to seek protection. You two are all alone, so why don't you come with us?"
Tian Qiao inexplicably felt a good impression of Li Renyi and was about to agree, but she held back and turned to look at Cheng Zhiyu: "Chengzi? What do you think?"
Cheng Zhiyu said apologetically, "I don't have any special abilities, and I'm afraid I'll be a burden to everyone, so let's just forget about it."
Tian Qiao didn't say anything upon hearing this. He could tell that Cheng Zhiyu didn't trust Li Renyi very much. He had initially had some goodwill towards the other party, but then he became wary again.
Orange is always smart; he must have his reasons.
Tian Qiao has always been a bit dim-witted, but he has always understood one thing: listening to Chengzi is always the right thing to do.
Before Li Renyi could speak, a thin superhuman standing to the side laughed and said, "Hey, what's the big deal? There are plenty of ordinary people in our team."
Upon hearing this, Cheng Zhiyu asked in surprise, "Really?"
He put on a dejected look: "I've met some people with superpowers before, and they all looked down on ordinary people like me, even though I could fight zombies myself! It's really...!"
As she spoke, she made an angry face, then looked at Li Renyi with deep emotion: "Mr. Li, you are the first superhuman I have ever met who does not look down on ordinary people."
The skinny superhuman said, "That's right. Our leader welcomes everyone, whether they are ordinary people or superhumans, to join our team. He said that we are all survivors of this chaotic world and should help each other."
Cheng Zhiyu looked at Li Renyi with immediate admiration: "Mr. Li, you are truly as benevolent and righteous as your name suggests!"
Tian Qiao, who was standing to the side, almost couldn't help but laugh.
Li Renyi remained calm. These ordinary people always showed such gratitude every time he allowed them to join his team. Cheng Zhiyu was not an exaggeration; some even knelt down before him.
Li Renyi accepted the praise with a smile: "Our team is nearby. You can come back with us later."
Cheng Zhiyu nodded: "I'm glad you don't mind."
Li Renyi looked at Tian Qiao: "I think you must be a superhuman, right? Do you want to come with us?"
Tian Qiao didn't know how he figured it out. Without receiving any instructions from Cheng Zhiyu, he just said casually, "Okay, if Chengzi goes, I'll go."
Li Renyi glanced at Cheng Zhiyu: "You two have a good relationship?"
Tian Qiao: "That's right, we're brothers who grew up wearing the same pair of pants."
Li Renyi smiled but didn't say anything; it didn't matter that they had a good relationship.
Xiao Hei asked Cheng Zhiyu, "Why are you sharing the same pants with him? If you don't have any pants, I'll give you some."
Cheng Zhiyu: "..."
He gave Tian Qiao a wink, and Tian Qiao walked towards the superhumans around Li Renyi, while Cheng Zhiyu walked towards the ordinary people behind them.
These ordinary people were easy to spot. Compared to the well-fed and robust superhumans, they were much thinner, with a faint look of sorrow on their faces. They walked with little strength, as if they hadn't eaten in a long time.
It was the first time Cheng Zhiyu had seen such ordinary people since the apocalypse, and it was impossible for him not to be shocked. He sighed inwardly.
Several people watched Cheng Zhiyu warily, seemingly unhappy about his arrival, since one more person meant their food would be taken away.
Although Cheng Zhiyu was not physically strong, he looked like a strong young man. Although he was dissatisfied, no one clashed with him.
Of course, there were also some kinder people. One of them, a woman holding a child, gave him an awkward smile: "Young man, with Mr. Li, at least you won't have to live in fear anymore."
Cheng Zhiyu glanced at the little girl the woman was holding; she was thin and had unusually large eyes, looking at him timidly.
Cheng Zhiyu smiled at her, and she paused for a moment before smiling back at him.
“My little girl likes you. She doesn’t really talk to anyone else.” The woman touched the girl’s braids. Although the little girl was thin, her hair was neatly combed, and her clothes were clean and tidy compared to others. Clearly, the woman had done her best to take good care of her daughter.
"Brother is handsome," the little girl said softly.
The woman smiled and shook her head: "Don't make fun of her. Nannan has always liked good-looking people. She can't take her eyes off them."
Cheng Zhiyu smiled. How could he be laughing at her? The little girl was clearly very cute.
He walked with the mother and daughter and learned that the woman's name was Sister Hong and the little girl's name was Yan Yan.
Cheng Zhiyu was somewhat dazed. His sister was also called "Yan Yan," and he couldn't help but feel much closer to the little girl.
They entered the small supermarket, where the superhumans packed up everything edible, while the ordinary people just stood there dumbfounded, not even touching the cookies that were within easy reach, their faces clearly showing their cravings.
Cheng Zhiyu frowned and asked Sister Hong, "Why aren't you taking anything?"
Sister Hong said, "This is the team's rule: when the superhumans take the items back, they will distribute them to us."
But clearly, with ordinary people involved, they can pack things up much faster.
Sister Hong explained, "Hey, it's not the fault of the superpowered individuals. There was an ordinary person who used the excuse of taking supplies to eat half of them, and that's why the team adopted this rule."
Some of the superpowered individuals even cursed them, saying they were worse than pigs and dogs, only knowing how to eat and having no conscience.
But what can ordinary people like them do when they're scolded? They can only endure it. After all, some of them made mistakes, they left the group, and they have no ability to protect themselves. It's already a favor that these superhumans are willing to take them in.
"Where is the person who stole the food?" Cheng Zhiyu asked.
Hongjie said, "I haven't seen him since he was kicked out of the team."
She glanced around and, seeing that no one was paying attention, whispered, "Actually, it's not his fault; he was just too hungry."
Cheng Zhiyu looked at the superhumans; some of them were already stuffing food into their mouths, while the ordinary people didn't dare to move.
These superhumans bring ordinary people here, but they don't let them touch the supplies. So what is the purpose of these ordinary people?
Cheng Zhiyu asked Sister Hong, "Do they always bring you along when they go out?"
Sister Hong nodded: "They will bring a few people with them, and the rest will stay at the temporary accommodation to do things like cleaning."
Xiao Hei scoffed: "These superhumans aren't as kind as they seem on the surface."
Cheng Zhiyu patted Xiao Hei gently through his clothes to show that he understood.
He glanced at the thin Yan Yan, but couldn't bear it in the end, so he took a piece of bread out of his backpack and handed it to her.
Yan Yan looked at Cheng Zhiyu in disbelief, hesitating to reach out and take it.
Cheng Zhiyu smiled and said, "Eat up."
Sister Hong quickly waved her hand: "This... how can we accept this?"
Cheng Zhiyu said, "Let Yan Yan eat, she's hungry."
Upon hearing this, Sister Hong was speechless. She turned her head away and wiped away her tears.
After confirming that Cheng Zhiyu had really given it to her, Yan Yan carefully unwrapped the bread, swallowed hard, and held it to Hong Jie's lips: "Mom, eat it quickly, it smells so good."
Hongjie swallowed subconsciously, but shook her head to avoid it: "Yanyan, eat."
Yan Yan insisted on giving the bread to Sister Hong, just then, an ordinary person suddenly shouted, "Superpowered beings! This little brat is stealing bread!"
Cheng Zhiyu's smile vanished, and he looked coldly at the person who had spoken.
No wonder these ordinary people didn't dare touch these supplies even when no one was watching.
