Chapter 62 War Conference "I've finished my work, I'm coming to find you now..."
"The place where I was born..." Jiu Su paused for a moment before saying, "is very far from here. I checked on the map, and even now, it's a desolate, uninhabited ice field, and no one dares to approach it."
It seems we're about to venture into the no-man's-land. Shu Qing asked, "What else? What was it like before?"
“When I was conscious, I loved looking at the night sky there. It was clear and high, with the full moon reflecting on the snow that never melted. It was so beautiful.” When she mentioned that desolate place, Jiu Su’s expression was slightly nostalgic. “Sometimes the days there were very long, and we could never wait for nightfall; but sometimes the nights were also very long, and I could keep looking at it.”
Shu Qing mentally confirmed: it seems we're getting close to the Arctic Circle.
“And sometimes, brilliant light descends from the night sky, magnificent and beautiful like a dream. I haven’t seen such a sight since I left the Northern Border.” Jiu Su said, smiling as she looked at Shu Qing. “I’ve always wanted to take you to see it, but various things have held me back… I’ve never been able to go. Now, it seems my dream is about to come true?”
Going to the north to see the aurora with her boyfriend sounds really nice, and Shu Qing immediately agreed: "I want to go, I've never seen the aurora before. How about this, after visiting my parents during the Spring Festival, we can go directly from the capital to see the aurora? It's a pity we don't have enough savings right now, otherwise, we could just take a round-the-world trip."
Jiu Su didn't object to her earlier suggestion, but she didn't understand what a round-the-world trip was, so she asked her curiously what it meant.
"It's about traveling around the world," Shu Qing thought to herself. "Every region has its own scenery, history, culture, and art. If I had enough money, I really wanted to see and experience all over the world. Also, aren't you monsters scattered all over the world? If I go to other places, will I be able to see other kinds of supernatural creatures?"
“Yes,” Jiu Su said confidently. “However, just like your human race, there are indeed differences in appearance and abilities, but the differences are not that great. You’ll see when you see it later.”
Shu Qing clenched her fist and said, "We can't go now, but we can go later. Starting tomorrow, we'll start saving money for a trip around the world!"
Jiu Su laughed again, "We don't need that many. I can recruit strong men from the local monsters to lead the way for us."
"..." Shu Qing asked, "Did you do this when we traveled the world before?"
Jiu Su nodded confidently.
Fortunately, he was the king of the demon race. If he were a human emperor, he would have experienced firsthand what "the people's war" meant sooner or later.
Shu Qing temporarily put aside her dream of "traveling around the world," which could only be realized in the future, and focused on thinking about the aurora-seeing plan she would set off for after the New Year. Suddenly, she remembered something: "Although we agreed to see the aurora together, I've never been to an uninhabited area before. You're in charge of protecting me, okay?"
"Of course," Jiu Su said with a smile. Shu Qing noticed that he was in a really good mood. Normally, he would never say "of course" so openly. He would have to ask for some sweet and affectionate benefits in a roundabout way, or tease her a bit before he would be satisfied.
They had traveled the world together before, and he must cherish those happy memories, and truly long to take her to the place where he was born.
That's why he's so happy to talk about these things now...
Jiu Su coughed lightly, a smile appearing in her eyes, and slowly added, "If I can't even protect my lover in my own home, what will become of my reputation in the demon race if word gets out?"
Shu Qing: "..."
She rolled her eyes at him. "You didn't have to say the second half of that sentence."
The two, who dreamed of traveling around the world, first toured the small shopping area near their home, had dinner, went to see a movie, and then, carrying bags of their spoils, went home hand in hand.
Upon arriving home, he discovered two uninvited guests waiting for him: Jin Wanli and Hu You.
Shu Qing was practically traumatized by the sight of these two people together. She instinctively prepared a barrage of verbal attacks, watching them warily, ready to unleash a barrage at any moment.
Hu You dismissed her with disdain and gave her a cold glance.
Jin Wanli, however, reacted even more strongly than her when he saw her, grabbing her wrist immediately. Then, remembering that Jiu Su was right there, he awkwardly released her, switching back to normal speech and asking, "How did you save that super-sensory gecko before?"
Shu Qing frowned, sensing the subtext in those words, "What's wrong with it now?"
"Restless and trying to sense things everywhere, as if desperately trying to detect something." Jin Wanli frowned. "This is usually a sign that the demonic power is about to go out of control. If it is handled properly, there is still hope. But if the demonic power is completely out of control, then it's all over."
What will happen?
“At best, it will cause serious injury; at worst, it will kill.” Jiu Su explained from the side. “As for the others, it depends on the specific abilities and energy level. As for this Super-Aware Gecko, its energy level is not high, and its talent is not aggressive, so it will not cause any very fatal disaster.”
Shu Qing had already gotten used to being tricked by him and dared not relax, keeping a wary eye on Jiu Su.
"What did you think I was going to say?" Jiu Su chuckled. "I'm telling the truth. The worst outcome would probably be that everyone in the Super Management Bureau would be forced to 'be honest with each other,' those with malicious intentions would be exposed, and their selfish desires would be made public. But that's about it. At most, it would be what you call... well, 'social death,' but no one would actually die."
The consequences didn't seem serious at first glance, but when Shu Qing put herself in her shoes... what would happen if her imaginations about Jiu Su, which she hadn't yet had time to put into practice, were exposed?
She imagined the scene and felt like banging her head against a wall. She immediately shouted, "We humans are social animals! This consequence might not mean much to you, but it's extremely serious for us!"
Jiu Su smiled. "I know." He also had things he didn't want her to know.
"Alright, let's not change the subject," Jin Wanli brought the conversation back on track, "How exactly did you save it?"
Hu You added sarcastically from the side, "And who exactly has it been in contact with at Youling Studio? We need to figure out why it's on the verge of spiraling out of control. Miss Shu understands, right?"
"I understand." Shu Qing, whose ammunition had finally found its moment to shine, said without hesitation, "We modern humans have been educated to distinguish between the importance and urgency of events, unlike those old monsters who have lived for thousands of years, clinging to prejudices and being rigid. Of course I understand."
Jiu Su: "..."
Jin Wanli: "..."
In one sentence, he launched a sweeping attack on the remaining three people present.
Shu Qing said, "I know what's important and what's urgent," and acted without hesitation. She quickly pulled up the recent customer registration form for Youling Studio and handed it to Jin Wanli. Jiu Su then explained Shu Qing's talent to Jin Wanli in detail. It sounded normal and didn't seem like something that could cause demonic power to go out of control.
Jiu Su asked again, "How is it?"
“Not good,” Jin Wanli said irritably. “The caregivers are still trying all sorts of methods. Brother, if possible, I’d like to invite you two to go and take a look. The caregivers…” He glanced at Hu You, barely swallowing his sarcastic remark, “Anyway, you know. Maybe if you two went to take a look, you’d have a better chance?”
They couldn't refuse, so the two of them went without saying a word and didn't head back until it was completely dark.
Shu Qing looked tired and leaned against Jiu Su's chest. She had used her talent to help Jiu Su cast a spell to suppress the little gecko's demonic power, which was also quite tiring. She relied entirely on Jiu Su for support and was practically half-carried and half-supported by him into the car.
She rested her head on Jiu Su's shoulder and said weakly, "Thank goodness, we were saved. It wasn't all for nothing."
Jiu Su hummed in agreement and said softly, "It's all thanks to you."
Shu Qing snuggled against his shoulder, closed her eyes, and sighed softly.
Jiu Su tightened her grip on her arm slightly and asked, "What's wrong?"
“I was just thinking,” Shu Qing said weakly, “why is its fate so unfortunate?”
Jiu Su remained silent for a moment, then silently stroked her hair, as if offering quiet comfort.
But Shuqing soon discovered that it wasn't the little gecko that was having such a bad fate, it was actually her and Jiusu.
The next day, she finished her photoshoot at Youling Studio. Seeing that it was still early, she went to the Supermarket Management Bureau as usual, waiting to leave work with Jiu Su. But when she arrived at the Supermarket Management Bureau, she found that it was completely different from usual. People were rushing around, and even acquaintances who saw her only nodded.
Shu Qing immediately pulled out her phone and found that she hadn't received a reply to the message she sent to Jiu Su earlier, "I've finished my work and I'm coming to find you now (*^▽^*)". She immediately grabbed someone she knew and asked, "Where's Jiu Su?"
The man paused for a moment, then scratched his head: "They're all in a meeting up there. Senior should be there too. It should be in C-103, or maybe 105. Miss Shu, you can go and take a look."
So, Jiu Su was alright. Shu Qing felt relieved, nodded her thanks, and immediately headed to find the meeting room.
The man called out to her again, "If you've found Miss Shu, just wait outside. There's a tactical meeting going on upstairs, so it's best not to go in."
Her heart, which had just begun to ease, jumped again. Shu Qing asked in surprise, "A war meeting?"
“Yes,” the man said, “I heard there’s a high-level supernatural being near the capital that’s showing signs of going out of control, and Minister Kim and his team need to return to the capital. They’re probably discussing specific tactics right now, right?”
Upon hearing this, Shu Qing became even more uneasy and ran straight to the conference room.
She ran all the way to the outside of the conference room, breaking out in a light sweat, but a chill ran through her. Only when she saw Jiu Su's snow-white figure through the glass door of the conference room did her chaotic thoughts calm down a little.
Shu Qing took a few deep breaths, found a chair and sat down. She then hurriedly texted her family: "Mom, Dad, please come to H City as soon as possible?"
Shu Tong was probably still busy, so Zhao Yuqing quickly replied, "What's wrong?"
Shu Qing carefully considered her words and briefly recounted what she had heard today, then specifically instructed, "It's not necessarily going to happen. I don't know the specifics yet, so let's just be safe."
Zhao Yuqing replied to her, "Okay, I'll discuss it with your mother when she gets back from the clinic."
Shu Qing replied with an "Mmm," then opened her social media app and started checking for any unusual activity near the capital, but to no avail. Just then, the meeting adjourned, and several people filed out, all with solemn expressions.
Jiu Su also came out. He saw Shu Qing, smiled, and walked towards her.
Shu Qing hugged him tightly.
