My aunt plopped down on the fabric sofa, her fingers stroking the armrests. "Ruoruo, you lived with me for three years when you were little. We all treated you like our own daughter." She paused. "Now your brother is getting married, and they haven't chosen a house yet. Your room is empty anyway. Give me the key."
Her tone sounded more like an order than a negotiation.
Fang Ruoruo whispered, "Aunt, I still want to live in this room..."
My aunt interrupted her again, "How can you be so ungrateful? Don't forget how many people have lived in our house before you! Your father doesn't care about you! And if I hadn't paid 20,000 yuan for your mother's hospitalization, would she have survived?"
Fang Ruoruo felt a tightness in her chest. She had already paid back the 20,000 yuan, and even paid back 30,000 yuan including interest. Although the 20,000 yuan was given to her by her father, her aunt seemed to have intermittent amnesia and would bring up the old accounts every time they met.
Fang Ruoruo just remained silent as a form of resistance. She didn't want to give the house she bought to her aunt, but she didn't expect that two days later, she received a call from her mother. Her mother asked her to look at the group in an angry tone.
In the family group, my aunt was giving a long speech.
"Fang Ruoruo is so ungrateful! She occupied the property and wouldn't let her brother use it! This is unforgivable!" She also posted a picture, which was a photo of her having dinner at her aunt's house when she was a child. However, the person in the corner of the photo was not her, but her cousin who was making faces at the side.
The accuser Fang Ruoruo couldn't stand it any longer, but other relatives quickly chimed in, with her second uncle even sending her a private message: "Your aunt has had a hard time too. As a younger generation, you should be more filial."
And my mother didn't say a word.
The next day at work, Fang Ruoruo found that her cousin was waiting downstairs of her company. He had long hair that looked a little greasy, and he came up to her directly when he saw Fang Ruoruo.
"Cousin, if you don't want to sell your house, why don't you give it to me? It's not like you won't return it. Have you forgotten that your cousin gave you all the food when he was a kid?"
Fang Ruoruo really didn't remember, she only remembered that her cousin often showed off his snacks in front of her. But it was obvious that her cousin came today to make preparations, and he followed Fang Ruoruo from the door all the way to her company.
Faced with her cousin's persistence, the company leader frowned and gave her an ultimatum, asking her to deal with her family affairs first before coming to work.
Fang Ruoruo finally gave in. Her mother, over the phone, ordered her, "We're all relatives, how could you be so naive?" So she moved into a rental apartment in the next neighborhood and "lent" it to her eldest cousin for his wedding. She naively thought she'd be done with it after her cousin's wedding.
But time passed quickly, and not only did her cousin get married, he also showed no intention of moving out of her house.
Fang Ruoruo couldn't help herself and went to ask her aunt. Her aunt's answer stunned her: "I asked about your small house. It's only 400,000 yuan second-hand. I'll ask your cousin to give you 1,000 yuan a month as rent. You can let him live in it. You are a little girl who will get married sooner or later. Why buy a house? Won't it be cheap for outsiders in the future?"
After hanging up the phone, Fang Ruoruo knocked on her door. A heavily made-up woman opened the door. She had seen her before; it was her eldest cousin's wife. She gave her a cold look and went back inside. Fang Ruoruo noticed that she looked like herself in her pajamas. She walked into the room cautiously, then froze. Was this still her home? Trash was strewn everywhere, leaving marks on the pristine white walls. Socks, underwear, and clothes were scattered on the table... and the air was filled with a foul odor.
Fang Ruoruo felt something in her heart break. She stood there in a daze until her eldest cousin came out and pushed her out.
