"No, I must be hallucinating because of hunger." It began to try to reassure itself. No one could possibly play such a trick on it on its own turf. It couldn't be.
But when it returned to its room with heavy steps, it saw the rocking chair that its original owner had placed in the corner, slowly rocking. Instantly, its pupils dilated, and it lunged forward, grabbing the rocking chair: "You finally..."
It froze. A high-class eerie creature lay on the rocking chair, looking at it with pity.
It suddenly sprang back; a fellow creature had invaded its territory! But a moment later, it shook its head. No, the aura from before wasn't the strange one before it.
"Who are you..."
The coffin lady sighed: "What matters isn't who I am..."
The lizardman's pupils suddenly dilated, and its eyes glanced behind it. Behind it was the shadow of a human, and that person reached out a hand to it.
Normally, it would have thought these humans were courting death, but at this moment, its heart was filled with fear. Who knew what was behind it!
It slowly turned its head and gradually met the gaze of a smiling face.
The coffin lady covered her eyes, but her fingers were still open. To be honest, watching Fang Zhiyi deal with the other members of her kind, she felt a strange sense of schadenfreude.
Watching helplessly as Fang Zhiyi skinned the lizard-man, the Coffin Lady swallowed a non-existent saliva, a habit she had developed when she was still human.
"Let's go, next place."
"Yes, boss." The coffin lady obediently got up.
At the entrance of Lingnan Village, a tree without leaves stands eerily. The remaining villagers, hearing the cries of a baby coming from that tree, all show fear on their faces.
Thousand Trees came again, but they couldn't do anything. It was too far from the city, and they couldn't even notify the Guardians.
The branches of the thousand-child tree swayed, and the cries of infants echoed in all directions.
And those feelings of fear nourished its body like nutrients.
But the next moment, the thousand-tree paused and looked at the figure sitting on its branch with a puzzled expression.
In the moonlight, a pale face turned to it: "Good evening?"
Qian Zishu was somewhat bewildered. Wasn't this person afraid of him?
That night, the villagers of Lingnan Village had a rare good night's sleep. When they heard the night watchman recount what he had seen the previous night, everyone looked incredulous.
"It's true! That guy took a knife and shaved that weird tree bare! I swear!"
"Zhang Lao Er, have you been secretly drinking again?"
“Go and see for yourselves!” the Night’s Watchman said, pointing in a direction.
The villagers gathered hesitantly at that spot, but there was nothing there.
"Stop arguing, hurry up and get ready. That thing will be coming again tonight," the village chief finally ordered. But the preparations were nothing more than preparing more food and drink and doing some more work during the day.
Zhang Lao Er hesitated, looking at the flat piece of land. He couldn't possibly be mistaken...
The old man beside him said, "Don't think about it anymore. How could that thing possibly die? It lives to torment us. It's all a curse..." He sighed and walked away, "They all deserve to die, they all deserve to die..."
When that tree first appeared, they thought it was a sacred tree, because no other strange occurrences happened after it appeared. It wasn't until the sound of babies crying every night and all the villagers had the same terrifying dream that they realized it wasn't a sacred tree at all, but a strange phenomenon.
People kept going insane and committing suicide; they knew they couldn't escape.
Lingnan Village had a cruel custom a long time ago: if a family had a series of boys who died young, they would need to find a newborn girl, wrap her up, hang her on a tree, and let those evil birds eat her. After nine days, they would bury the remains at the tree roots, and then the family that had lost boys would soon have a baby boy.
But those who started this are all dead, and their descendants have gone mad or died, yet this tree still appears here every night, as if to settle their sins.
