Chapter 96

Lu Shenyun sat down, took a sip of tea, and glanced at Huang Yu. "What case?"

Huang Yu tilted his head, pondered for a moment, and then clicked his tongue. "No disaster, no disaster, no death, it's not a big case."

"How could that possibly alarm your Deputy Commander, Lord Huang?" Lu Shenyun said as he took off his gloves. "Aren't you always just loafing around and waiting to die?"

“I’m not good at this,” Huang Yu pointed to her legs and then to her head, “but I’m very diligent here.”

“I just heard the brothers talking about it, and I always felt there was something strange about it.” As he spoke, he handed the picture to Lu Shenyun. “Take a look at this picture. What does it look like? Someone drew it with sheep’s blood in the middle of the night at the gate of the Imperial Observatory’s Director, Lord Zhang. It’s spread, and everyone says it’s some kind of divine revelation.”

Lu Shenyun frowned, took the paper he was handed, and looked at the pattern on it.

Huang Yu explained, "This pattern has a circle at the top with a dot in the middle, resembling the character '日' (sun). Below it is the character '太' (too), but together they don't form a complete character. What do you think it means?"

Lu Shenyun pondered for a moment before looking up at him. "You just said, what kind of blood did you use to write it?"

"Sheep's blood!"

It's not pig's blood, it's not dog's blood, it's sheep's blood...

After finishing her meal with Xu Silin, Qingchen went home first.

Shen Qian is still unable to move today and can only stay at the Xu residence. She was worried that he might feel unwell at night, so she accepted Xu Silin's invitation to stay at his house.

After settling Old Shen at home and taking two books with him, Qingchen returned to the Xu residence.

Shen Qian remained unconscious. Li Shizhen came over before dinner to treat his wounds and apply some medicine. The servants of the Xu family came over from time to time to add charcoal and pour tea. Qingchen was afraid of troubling them, so she only told them to put down the charcoal and teapot immediately, as she could do it herself.

After turning on the lamp, she moved a stool and sat down by Shen Qian's bedside, watching over him while reading by candlelight.

Holding four positions, there are still many things she doesn't understand in each one, so she can only learn by observing. Especially recently, with the horses won, how to ensure their successful breeding and provide a continuous supply of warhorses for the Ming Dynasty, and how to improve the Ming Dynasty's horse administration, all require more detailed research.

While she was reading, Xu Si came into the room twice.

He didn't seem to have anything important to say; he just said he wanted to talk to her.

Seeing his excited expression, Qingchen was afraid of disturbing her second uncle, so she had no choice but to sit with him in the next room and talk for a while.

For some reason, Xu Silin seemed to be in very good spirits, and he was especially talkative tonight. He didn't say anything that he absolutely had to, but instead asked her how she was as a child, and then talked about things that happened to him when he was a child, all sorts of random things that didn't really get to the point.

Qingchen was a guest, so she kept him company. Her childhood was rather dull; even basic necessities were a problem, and she also carried the secret of having to disguise herself as a boy. Recalling these things, she couldn't help but think of her second uncle, who had raised her and was now lying in a hospital bed. So when Xu Silin eagerly awaited her story, she didn't say much, nor did she have much to say anyway.

Xu Silin was different. He came from a wealthy family and had a very rich childhood. He lived in both the capital and Jiangnan, and did almost everything from climbing trees to going down to the river to hunt birds and catch fish.

He leaned against a pillar, his eyes shining as he recalled his childhood, a sense of pride that he had felt as a man since childhood as "brave and valiant."

Later, when Xu Silin came to see Qingchen for the third time, it was already 7 PM.

He pushed the door open a crack, poked his head in, and whispered, "Qingchen."

Shen Qingchen felt somewhat helpless. This was the third time tonight, and he had so much to say.

She turned to look at him and whispered, "It's so late, aren't you going to sleep?"

"I'm not sleepy. Come out, let's talk for a while longer."

"No, I need to read for a while longer. I have some things to take care of when I get back tomorrow... Let's talk about it tomorrow. It's cold outside, you should go back to sleep."

"Then I'll wait for you. Come out when you're done reading." With that, he closed the door.

Qingchen sighed, lowered his head and continued reading her book, thinking that as long as she didn't go out, he would leave soon.

After a while, she turned around and saw his shadow still imprinted on the lattice door.

She read for a while longer, then turned around, but he was still there.

After hesitating for a moment, Qingchen finally put down the book, walked over, and opened the door.

The person outside the door was breathing on their hands and rubbing them together. When they saw her, they said happily, "Finished reading?"

Light snow began to fall from the horizon sometime earlier than I had noticed.

They fell in tiny, light pieces, quietly onto the eaves and the ground.

Afraid of the cold wind blowing into the room, Qingchen turned around and closed the door, then looked at him and said, "It's so cold, why have you been waiting here? Can't we talk about it tomorrow?"

He looked down at her. "Who said I was cold?"

He finally had a chance to spend a night alone with her, how could he let it just slip away like that...?

"You're rubbing your hands together and breathing on them to warm them up..."

“That doesn’t count. You’re from the South, you don’t understand the cold of Northerners.” He said seriously, his eyes deep and mysterious. “Whether it’s cold or not, you can tell by touching your nose. If your nose is warm, it means you’re not cold.”

He continued, "If you don't believe me, touch my nose."

He had been standing outside for at least 15 minutes; his nose was even a little red from the cold. How could he not be cold? Besides, she had lived in modern times for so long and had been exposed to a lot of knowledge; she had never heard of the theory that a cold nose meant a cold body.

Seeing that she didn't speak, he continued, "Thinking for so long? Surely Lord Shen doesn't even know such simple common sense?"

After hesitating for a moment, Qingchen reached out with some skepticism and gently touched his nose.

Before she could even react to whether it was hot or cold, he suddenly raised his chin and pressed his lips against her palm.

Qingchen recoiled as if electrocuted, looking at him helplessly, "What are you doing!"

He lowered his head and scratched his forehead. "I...I misspoke. It wasn't the nose, it was the lips." He kissed her, and his heart pounded.

"...Don't do that again!" She was a little unhappy that he had teased her.

He looked up and asked calmly and softly, "What do you mean?"

Not wanting to argue with him anymore, she turned and opened the door. "I need to rest. Let's talk about it tomorrow."

Before she closed the door, one of his words floated into the room: "A man with warm lips loves his wife."

The next morning, Qingchen had to return to the court for his duties.

Just as they reached the main gate of the Xu residence, a group of people entered from outside, the leader of whom was an acquaintance.

Lu Shenyun.

Lu Shenyun placed his hand on the Embroidered Spring Blade, a hint of surprise showing in his indifferent expression.

Qingchen bowed to him and was about to leave when he heard a faint voice say, "Stop."

She paused, her gaze falling directly on the gate of the Xu residence and the ground in front of it. A pungent smell of blood wafted through the cold wind.

There is a pattern on the road outside the gate, with a circle on top and the character "太" (tài) below.
