My sudden movement startled Chen Jin. He stood against the wall and asked me, "Are you being possessed by a ghost?"
Without time to explain to Chen Jin, I rushed to the door, opened it, and chased after him down the hallway. I had to be quick because about ten seconds had passed between when Chen Jin closed the door and when I realized what was happening. It would take about the same amount of time to get from downstairs to upstairs, so I had to catch up with Cao Xiaobei before he went inside.
The building we were staying in was a four-story villa, so there was no elevator. This made it easier for me to catch up with Cao Xiaobei, so when he took out his key to open the door, I had already grabbed the back of his shirt...
He instinctively flinched, then looked at me with a startled expression.
I said, "You didn't expect to run into me here, did you...? I didn't expect it either... Where's Sisi? Is she in this room?"
Why should I tell you?
"You can keep your mouth shut... It's fine, just open the door and I'll go in and see for myself."
"Try taking one step. If you go in, it's trespassing... I'll call the police and have you arrested."
As Cao Xiaobei spoke, he pulled the key out of the lock, which was already inserted, and then confronted me.
I nodded, pretending that I wasn't in a hurry, and said, "It's such a small place, if she's inside, there will definitely be some noise... It's okay, I have plenty of time today, I'll just stay here and keep watch... If you have the same amount of time, you can stay here and wait with me."
Cao Xiaobei got impatient and angrily said, "What are you playing at?... Whether she's inside or not, what does it have to do with you?"
“Yes… his friends abroad have already called me, I have to call them back and let them know I’m safe…” After a slight pause, I continued, “Cao Xiaobei, this isn’t me causing you trouble, you told me yourself that Sisi was with you… Now that I’ve seen you, if I don’t ask you for her, who else should I ask?… Right now, they’re treating this as a missing person case. To put it bluntly, this is human trafficking. Compared to me trespassing, this is a much bigger crime!”
"Are you trying to scare me...?"
"I'm not trying to scare you... I'll give you ten minutes. If you don't give me an explanation, I'll call the police with our chat history."
Cao Xiaobei was furious and cursed, "How can there be such a jerk as you in this world?"
I didn't say anything, but instead took out a cigarette from the pack and lit it, making it clear that I was going to waste time with him.
Cao Xiaobei looked like he'd been raped, then reluctantly pulled the key out of his pocket, opened the door, and said to me, "If you're so capable, then show me someone..."
With a cigarette dangling from my lips, I entered this house I had been to before. The layout of the house was almost unchanged, and I opened the doors to each room with practiced ease... but I couldn't even see a trace of Yang Sisi.
I sat down on the sofa in the living room and asked, "Were all those messages you sent me just to tease me?...Where did Sisi go?"
Cao Xiaobei replied with great emotion, "I've opened the door for you, so go ahead and look for me if you dare. Why are you asking me..."
"You must have met her... I can only ask you about this."
Just as Cao Xiaobei and I were talking, another onlooker appeared in the room, Chen Jin... After figuring out the reason, he started to offer random suggestions, saying, "Why are you talking so much nonsense to him... Let's do something tough and just pry his mouth open... Look at his skinny arms and legs, it'll be like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut for the two of us, we won't have to put in any effort at all."
I lowered my voice and whispered in Chen Jin's ear, "He's Cao Jinbo's son... We need to ask his father for a favor, so be polite."
Chen Jin shuddered, then grinned at Cao Xiaobei... a real shameless coward.
I took a deep breath, lowered my voice, and said to Cao Xiaobei, "Whether what you said yesterday was true or false, I can't control it; because it's between the two of you... But you have to tell me where Yang Sisi is now, they're really worried... At least let them know she's safe, okay?"
Cao Xiaobei refused to speak no matter what.
I patiently continued, "What I'm doing is indeed meddling... How about this, I'll give you their contact information, you can contact them directly, and I won't get involved in this matter."
Cao Xiaobei finally spoke up: "Give me the number."
I gave him Xiaobao's phone number, and feeling that I had no reason to stay in the house any longer, I got up and prepared to leave... But I didn't feel at ease, because I thought of the recent news about some girls being victimized, and I felt that the world was not so peaceful, so I stopped and whispered to Cao Xiaobei, "I won't ask where she is, just tell me if she is safe."
"Safety."
I nodded, then called Chen Jin, and together we left Cao Xiaobei's house.
...
Back downstairs, I sat on the sofa in the living room, feeling somewhat troubled. I didn't know why I had made things so bad, or where things had gone wrong.
I don't know Yang Sisi very well either. From the moment we met, I thought that studying abroad was a great choice for her... But in reality, she seemed to be living in a bottomless abyss, which is why she had this desperate escape.
