Yang Sisi and I came here after passing by the hospital, so I was quite familiar with the way. Plus, it was late at night and there were no cars on the road, so we kept our speed up.
On the way, Yang Sisi, who had been throwing a tantrum, finally called me.
I put on my Bluetooth headset as quickly as possible and answered the call. Before Yang Sisi could speak, I said to her, "I don't have time to explain to you. Go back to the inn first... I have to go to the hospital."
"What's the meaning?"
“Wednesday San just sent me a text message… He said he’s tired of life and wants to ‘commit suicide’… When I called him back, his phone was off… He’s not the kind of person who would joke around with others, I’m afraid he might really be thinking of doing something drastic!”
Without the slightest hesitation, Yang Sisi on the other end of the phone said, "I'll go too."
"I drove the car away."
"I know the way, I'll take a taxi myself."
Before I could say anything more, Yang Sisi had already hung up the phone; and I didn't care about anything else, after taking off my Bluetooth headset, I stepped on the gas pedal hard and drove to the hospital at an even faster speed.
...
When I arrived at the hospital, the car could no longer move freely as it had during the day. I was stopped by the security guard, who knocked on the car window and told me that it was past the time for visiting patients.
I rolled down the car window and gestured as I spoke to him, “Sir, it’s urgent, really urgent… A friend of mine is hospitalized in your hospital and just sent me a message… saying he doesn’t want to live anymore… It’s a matter of life and death, please let me in right away.”
When I said this, I wasn't really sure, because I hadn't been able to contact Zhou San again after that. I wasn't sure if he was in the hospital now, but I could only gamble on this.
The gatekeeper still looked at me with some suspicion and was unwilling to let me through.
I patted the car's center console and said impatiently, "I'm here to save people, I really am here to save people! If someone dies because of you, can you take responsibility for that?... If you don't open the door, I'm going to rush in!"
As I said this, I jumped out of the car and prepared to rush into the pedestrian lane.
This time, the security guard finally took it seriously. He didn't stop me anymore, but ran into the hospital with me.
...
The hospital doesn't have any tall buildings, just one about 20 stories high. I took a powerful flashlight from the security guard and scanned the rooftop area; sure enough, I saw someone sitting on the railing with their feet dangling in the air, in extreme danger.
The security guard started to get nervous, so I told him to call the police, and then I waved and shouted at Zhou San on the top floor.
He didn't respond; he probably didn't realize it was me.
But this is already a very good result, after all, he hasn't done anything irreversible or stupid.
...
I rushed into the building, took the elevator to the top floor, and then ran through the emergency exit to the rooftop, facing Zhou San, who was sitting on the railing...
He had been drinking and didn't seem very sober. He sat on the railing, swaying back and forth, nodding erratically.
"San San, wake up... take a good look and see who's standing in front of you."
Zhou San turned to look at me, his mouth agape, then he said incoherently and with great pain, "Brother, am I really supposed to die...? I must be dead... How could you... come here...!"
“San San, listen to me, you are not dead, and you shouldn’t be dead… I arrived in Shangri-La tonight, but I thought it was too late, so I didn’t come to the hospital to see you… I came here specifically to see you… Please calm down, there is nothing in this world that cannot be solved, as long as you are alive.”
As I spoke, I tried to approach him.
"Brother... don't come any closer, you have no idea... what I've been through these past few days, I'm in so much pain... so much pain!... On the day I returned to Shangri-La, I decided that I could only die here, closer to my parents... After I die, I won't have to go through so much trouble to find them... Why do I have to live such a painful life... why!"
"Tell me what's bothering you... I'm here to hear it... It's okay, everyone has their ups and downs. As long as you're willing to talk about it, you can get through any obstacle."
"I can't say anything more, there's nothing to say... I don't dare to think about the future... All I see is despair... I'm suffocating!"
I was nervous. I could hear in Wednesday's words that he wanted to end his life... I wanted to persuade him, but he wouldn't tell me what had made him contemplate suicide... Yes, life in the detention center was indeed unbearable and a stain on his life, but it didn't warrant such an extreme way to end it... I remember talking to him in the detention center... He said he wanted to find a job at a software company and, after accumulating some experience, start his own business.
A person who has a plan for their life will not easily contemplate suicide.
It's very likely that in the days after I left the detention center, he was truly humiliated to the point of losing his dignity by those bastards, and coupled with his consistently unsatisfactory life, he eventually underwent a qualitative change and had suicidal thoughts.
My mind is becoming increasingly confused, and this confusion stems from my fear that Zhou San will jump off the cliff in front of me—a living, breathing human being!
“San San… come down first. We can talk about it down here… If you really go down, you will lose all your choices… Life is long, you must give yourself the opportunity to make choices… Once you make the right choice, when you look back at these things that make you feel like you can’t go on living… they’re really not that bad.”
