I turned around and saw Yang Sisi standing behind me, holding my cigarette pack. She frowned and said to me, "Are you trying to get yourself killed? You've smoked so many cigarettes all morning!"
"Death would be a relief, wouldn't it... Give me a cigarette."
"Where did you get such deep resentment... Isn't it better to be alive?"
"Can you give me the cigarette?"
"Why are you smoking...? Eat."
Yang Sisi
As she spoke, she placed the insulated box on my desk. Seeing that I didn't move, she opened the box for me. Inside was a nutritional meal she had ordered for me from the gym, which wasn't special since I had already eaten it yesterday. What was special was the mushroom soup.
I asked, "Did you use that matsutake mushroom from yesterday to make this?"
"Hmm... I've been cooking this all morning... You have to eat it properly, these matsutake mushrooms are the kind I almost risked my life to pick."
"Stop talking, just one bite and it feels like it took half your life."
"You know how good I am to you, right?"
As Yang Sisi spoke, she handed me chopsticks, urging me to eat quickly.
Actually, I've never had much confidence in her cooking skills. I wanted to say something, but seeing her smiling face, I couldn't bring myself to say anything. At least she came with good intentions, and if I said no, it would hurt her.
Fortunately, I didn't question her. To be honest, the mushroom soup was really delicious; she clearly put a lot of thought into it.
"Is it good?"
"Fresh but not greasy, delicious."
"Then drink more..."
After a brief pause, Yang Sisi asked me again, "How late are you going to work tonight?"
