The waves surged toward the beach, one after another... but neither Yang Sisi nor I showed any sign of retreating, letting the waves soak our shoes and trouser legs. I appeared calm, but the turmoil in my emotions was no less intense than the waves before me.
I stubbed out my cigarette and was about to take out another one to light, but Yang Sisi stopped me. She hated that I smoked so extreme a thing or two. But besides smoking, I didn't know what else I could do to soothe my feelings at that moment.
I grabbed a handful of sand and rubbed it in my hands several times before speaking to Yang Sisi, "Don't you find it strange? I'm much calmer than you expected?"
"Yes... why are you so calm?"
“Before you, Jian Zihan had already called to tell me… You came to tell me again, which only adds to the credibility of this matter… Before, I was in a daze and thought it was a dream, but now I completely believe it.”
After a brief pause, I laughed again, "But what good would it do to believe her? ... She's been back for a month now, and she still hasn't come to see me... All the kind-hearted people are unrelated to this matter... She's colder than anyone else."
Are you very disappointed in her right now?
"She never gave me any hope, so how could I be disappointed?"
As I spoke, I threw the handful of sand in my hand into the sea... I had no other desires, I just hoped that the obsession in my heart could disappear from my sight like these grains of sand.
Yang Sisi looked at me for a long time and then said, "I really want to comfort you... but when I think about it carefully, there's nothing to comfort you about."
"Yes, he brought it on himself, what's there to comfort him about!"
That's not what I meant.
"Forget about that... Let's talk about something happier. How have you been lately?"
"Why are you asking me how I'm doing? Just to say something happy?... Have you always thought I was doing great?"
"A young girl in the prime of her life, with no worries about food or drink, how could she not be doing well!"
Yang Sisi looked at me and then said very seriously, "I'm not a teenage girl anymore... In another year, I'll be the same age as Ye Zhi, the girl you met at the observation deck."
"Why does this sound so awkward to me?"
“Because there are some facts you’re unwilling to admit… You seem open-minded, but you’re actually someone who really enjoys isolating yourself. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have come to a place like this and stayed for more than half a year… If it were me here, I would have died of exhaustion in less than a week… Where is Dali as good as this place?”
"Speaking of Dali, I actually have something to ask you... Did you stay in Dali afterward?"
"No."
Isn't Dali the place you can't bear to part with?
Yang Sisi looked at me with resentment, as if to tell me that her decision to leave Dali was entirely because of me… But when she spoke, she didn’t say that. She simply said, “I went back to Shanghai and became my dad’s assistant… Speaking of which, I really have to thank you… My dad took that money and started another company, which is an online knowledge-based paid content business… My dad is a very visionary person, and this year happens to be the year that knowledge-based paid content explodes… Although the company has been established for less than a year, its market value has already exceeded 500 million yuan, and many investment institutions are vying to invest in his projects… He has made a comeback.”
"What I admire most is people who have the courage to start over..."
"Unfortunately, you are not."
That's why I admire him.
As I spoke, I avoided Yang Sisi's gaze; then, I reflected on the past year. It wasn't exactly a decadent year, but it was certainly negative enough... The only positive thing was that I was more indifferent to worldly affairs than before, and less cynical, but this didn't really help my life in any substantial way, at least I didn't accumulate any more wealth as a result.
After a moment of silence, Yang Sisi continued, "By the way, my dad really wants to meet you... He said you're his benefactor... If it weren't for this money, he wouldn't have been able to grow the company so big from the start... Actually, there are quite a few companies doing paid knowledge services, but those that have really made money this year are mostly the larger ones; small companies are still struggling."
"It's not a matter of who was anyone's benefactor... I also made a lot of money with his 4 million yuan principal."
"But I took the lion's share."
“That’s what you deserve… This is the capital market now. If it weren’t for that 4 million back then, even if there were a better opportunity in front of us, Chen Jin and I wouldn’t have been able to seize it.”
Yang Sisi wasn't buying it. She quickly realized what was going on and said to me, "Don't steer the conversation away from here... My dad says he wants to see you. Are you going to see him or not?"
"I saw it when I was in Dali."
"Back then you were just an unknown nobody...it's a different story..."
When Yang Sisi said that, I couldn't help but recall some details from when I first met her family. She actually told her parents that she and I were boyfriend and girlfriend, and that she was pregnant.
It's been over a year, almost two years, and she hasn't changed much. When she gets carefree, she'd dare to tear the earth apart.
And I haven't changed either... After all this time, I still haven't established a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship with her... I'm still treating her very seriously.
I smiled and finally replied, "I'll visit your dad another time... I don't want to leave here for now."
"Are you planning to spend the rest of your life here?"
