Chapter 1 Born with different eyes and excellent bones

Chapter 1 Born with heterochromia and excellent physique

In the cold winter, the sky is full of snow, a dazzling white.

Early in the morning, at the Angel Home Children's Welfare Institute, a social worker got up and opened the door, and immediately saw the man outside.

He was about thirty years old, thin, with a sunken face, and long hair that was past his shoulders and tied casually behind his back. He was wearing a black down jacket that had been washed to a pale color. It was probably a little too big, so it looked empty on him, and he looked a bit like a performance artist.

The social worker was unsure of the other party's intention and asked, "What can I do for you?"

The man spoke, his voice obviously lacking in strength, "Hello, I want to adopt a child."

The social worker looked at the middle-aged man at the door through the iron railings, opened the door, and led him into the house. "It's cold outside, come in and sit for a while."

The man entered the house and looked around first.

This is a reception hall. Because it was built some time ago, the lights on the roof are a little dim, the walls are a little yellow and cracked, and there are some mold spots if you look closely.

The whole hall is fairly tidy and clean, with only some sundries piled up in the corner. The wall facing the door is covered with colorful and creative crayon drawings.

The social worker filled a cup of hot water at the water dispenser, walked over to the man and handed it to him. He followed his gaze and smiled, "These were all drawn by the children in our courtyard."

"Oh." The man came back to his senses, withdrew his eyes from the crayon drawing, took the disposable plastic cup handed to him by the social worker, and thanked him.

He sat on the sofa, slowly drank the hot water in the plastic cup, then put the cup on the table and put forward his request again, "I want to adopt a child. How do I go about the adoption procedures?"

The social worker asked, "What's your name?"

"My last name is Li, Li Chengfeng."

"Hello, Mr. Li. I need to inform you in advance that the children we adopt here are all disabled children. Do you mind?"

"No problem."

"Then according to China's adoption requirements, the adopter must meet the following conditions: no children; the ability to raise, educate and protect the adoptee; no disease that medically prohibits the adoption of children; no criminal record..."

After the social worker finished reading, Li Chengfeng took out a stack of documents from his down jacket and placed them in front of him, "These are my supporting documents."

The social worker looked at the various supporting documents in front of him, picked up the hospital health diagnosis report at the top, looked at it for a while, and suddenly a strange expression appeared on his face.

"Mr. Li, have you just been discharged from the hospital?"

Li Chengfeng answered truthfully: "Yes, I was in a coma for 20 years and woke up unexpectedly recently, but the doctor said that I am in good health and meet the conditions for adoption."

Social worker: ...It’s quite unexpected.

Being able to wake up after being in a coma for twenty years is simply a medical miracle.

He picked up the ID card copy and compared it with the photo information. He noticed the year of birth written on the ID card and asked in surprise, "You are 46 this year?"

"yes."

The social worker couldn't help but glance at Li Chengfeng again, muttering, "Looks quite young... Ahem, excuse me, are you single or married?"

"single."

"Would you like to adopt a boy or a girl?"

"girl."

"This is a bit difficult."

The social worker put down the documents in his hand, with an embarrassed look on his face, "We are very strict in approving single men to adopt girls, you may not be approved."

Li Chengfeng took out a stack of printed papers from his down jacket and placed them in front of the other party. "The law stipulates that as long as the age difference is more than 40 years old, I should be able to adopt a girl under six years old in principle."

Looking at the complete set of preparation materials in front of him, the social worker knew that the man came prepared, and said, "How about this, our person in charge is not here today, and you have to report all the adoption matters to him. Otherwise, you can leave your phone number with us first, and we will contact you when he returns, okay?"

Li Chengfeng thought about it, nodded, and asked, "Can I go see the children first?"

The social worker was a little hesitant, "Children with disabilities may not be what you imagine. Are you sure you want to see it?"

Li Chengfeng nodded.

The social worker couldn't persuade him, so he finally stood up from the sofa and led him to the children's area.

In the children's area, the place where children play is separated by a wooden fence, and several children are playing with toys inside.

"It's too early. Some children are still asleep. We can only open this area for you to see."

"It's okay." Li Chengfeng turned his gaze to the area inside the wooden fence and saw the little girl sitting quietly in the corner.

The girl was petite and frail, with soft brown-black hair that fell to her shoulders, a pointed chin, and very fair skin, looking as if she had rarely been exposed to the sun.

She was holding a drawing board and seemed to be drawing. She didn't even raise her head when two people came into the children's area.

The social worker followed Li Chengfeng's gaze and saw the little girl in the corner. He sighed and said, "Her name is Li Ping'an. When she was three years old, her parents died in a car accident, so she was sent to us. After she came here, she never said a word and didn't play with other children. The doctor assessed that she might have some psychological disorders. In her case, we don't recommend that anyone else adopt her."

"Li Ping'an..." Li Chengfeng repeated the name said by the social worker.

Seeing this, the social worker smiled and said, "Come to think of it, you guys are still from the same family."

"How old are you?" Li Chengfeng asked.

The social worker paused and replied, "Five and a half years old."

Five and a half years old is just the right age for Li Chengfeng to adopt a child.

The social worker nervously picked at the edge of his trousers with his fingers.

Li Chengfeng did not ask to adopt Li Ping'an. Instead, he stared at Li Ping'an for a long while and sighed in a low voice: "He is too young. He doesn't look like five and a half years old."

The figure certainly doesn't look like that of a five-and-a-half-year-old child. People would believe it if they said it was a three or four-year-old.

The social worker suddenly showed an embarrassed expression on his face and explained: "Of course the food and drink in the welfare home are not as good as those outside, but we have never let the children go hungry."

Li Chengfeng was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "What happened to her eyes?"

The social worker looked at him and said in surprise: "You are quite observant. In fact, you can't tell if you don't look closely. One of her eyes has a gray pupil. She is born blind. Only the other eye can see normally... Oh, it's really pitiful."

In the past, there were infertile couples who came to the welfare home. When they saw Li Ping'an's sweet looks and quiet personality, they wanted to adopt a girl. However, after hearing that the girl was blind and mute, they backed off.

The social worker felt that the man in front of him would be no exception. After all, he was adopting a child, so why not adopt a healthy and smart child?

Li Chengfeng said to himself: "I was born with strange eyes and excellent bones."

The social worker was stunned for a moment. "What did you say?"

"Nothing." Li Chengfeng shook his head slightly, followed the social worker to visit the children's area, and then walked to the gate.

"Excuse me, when will you contact me?"

The social worker said in embarrassment: "It's hard to say. It depends on when our person in charge will come back. If it's fast, it will be three to five days. If it's slow, it's hard to say. Are you anxious?"

Li Chengfeng shook his head. "No hurry, just follow your procedures."

The social worker watched him walk out the door and turned into another alley before turning around and going back into the house.

He closed the door carefully, then walked behind the front desk and took out an old PHS cell phone from a secret compartment under the drawer.

After turning on his phone, he took a copy of Li Chengfeng's ID card, edited a text message and sent it out. Not long after, he received a reply on his phone.

After he clicked it and read it, his brows immediately frowned, and then he immediately made a phone call.

"Boss, it's me... A man came today and said he wanted to adopt a child. I found out that he is the uncle of the experimental subject 007, and 007 is the daughter of his biological sister. If he is determined to adopt..."

There was a roar from the other end of the phone, and the social worker suddenly bent over, holding the phone and nodding repeatedly.

"Yes, yes. I know that the experiment is at a critical moment. 007 must not be given out. I don't know how this uncle appeared. I have confirmed before that 007 is an orphan."

The roar on the phone did not subside. The social worker showed a depressed expression on his face, "He said he was in a coma for 20 years and woke up unexpectedly..."

He was interrupted before he could finish his words. The other party obviously thought he was making up excuses to escape accountability.

Such a bizarre reason.

The social worker was in tears.

He didn't know what to say after waking up from a coma for twenty years.

He asked bravely, "Boss, are you going to send out the extraordinary people?"

The three words "superhuman" seemed to be a switch, and the person on the other end of the phone instantly quieted down.

After a while, the social worker whispered back, "Yes, yes, he is just an ordinary person. I don't think it is necessary to send out extraordinary people... Then I will contact the 'Scavengers' to place an order and ask them to deliver a 'bento'... OK, OK, I understand."

After hanging up the phone, the social worker let out a long sigh, wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, then lowered his head and sent out a few messages.

After a while, I received a reply confirming that the order was successfully placed.

He turned off his cell phone and put it back into the secret compartment. He looked at the time shown on the wall clock and realized that it was almost noon.

Calculating the time, the lunch box should be delivered by 10 o'clock tonight.

The social worker casually threw Li Chengfeng's information into the trash can, turned on another smartphone, and started playing games with full concentration.

After Li Chengfeng left the welfare home, he wandered on the streets.

When passing by a public telephone booth, he suddenly slowed down and stopped, then thought for a while, walked into the booth, picked up the phone, and made a free call.

"The Public Security Bureau? I want to report a crime... At 10 o'clock tonight, there will be a car accident at the intersection of Meizi Street. A van was speeding and hit and killed a middle-aged man, slightly injured two passers-by, and then fled the scene. Please deploy police forces at the intersection in advance to intercept... Who am I? I'm just an enthusiastic citizen... Do I have to register my name? Then write Ling Ling Qi."

After hanging up the phone, Li Chengfeng put his hands to his mouth, exhaled, looked at the light snow falling outside the phone booth, and murmured: "It's snowing again. It seems that I can't sleep under the bridge tonight."

He hid in the snow in the phone booth for a while, and seeing that there was no sign of the snow stopping outside, he put on the hood on the back of his down jacket, put his hands in his pockets, and walked slowly forward.
