Chapter 20 Someone is Searching the Mountain

After being persuaded by Lin Shucheng, the three of them were full of energy. One of them was Lin Fugui's son, Lin Dazhuang, who carried two twisted dough sticks and stayed up in the tree all night.

As dawn approached, Lin Dazhuang was starving. He took a couple of bites of fried dough twists and looked down at the foot of the mountain. To his surprise, he saw some faint lights, as if someone was using torches.

Lin Dazhuang quickly stuffed the twisted dough into his mouth, jumped down, and hurriedly woke Lin Shucheng, whispering, "Uncle, someone is going up the mountain with a torch."

The other two woke the person in charge of the negotiation, saying anxiously, "Get up quickly! Someone has gone up the mountain! What should we do?"

For a time, many people were in a flurry of activity.

Lin Jinyue broke out in a cold sweat, hoping they wouldn't come to the mountaintop.

Lin Jinyue took two deep breaths. "Are there many people down the mountain? Are they government soldiers?"

Lin Dazhuang scratched his head: "It was pitch black and far away. I could only see torches and lights at the foot of the mountain. There seemed to be quite a few torches, about seven or eight."

Lin Jinyue calmed down instantly. There were only seven or eight torches; not many people could come.

Looking at the situation over there, Lin Jinyue said to everyone, "Don't worry, there are at most a few dozen people. Uncle Liu, Second Uncle, and Brother, you keep an eye on them. Whether they are refugees or government officials, shoot them in vital areas with crossbow bolts. The rest of you, quickly get some face masks to cover your faces so that no one can find us. We also need to retrieve those wooden arrows."

The group quietly made their way to the edge of a cliff, where they lay prone and could see the torches below.

Their hearts were in their throats; they were all extremely worried.

Unexpectedly, those people below only circled around the area and left before dawn was fully breaking.

Everyone was terrified and broke out in a cold sweat.

It turned out to be a false alarm.

Lin Youcai said to Lin Jinyue and the others, "It's probably people living down the mountain who came into the mountains looking for food. Grain prices are high everywhere lately. When we fled famine before, we would occasionally see people living in the city coming into the mountains to look for food. They came in the middle of the night, probably because the soldiers forbade it. Otherwise, if these people had taken everything in the mountains, the soldiers would have nothing to eat."
