Chapter 78 Doing a Favor

The brother and sister soon arrived in Shawan County.

Lin Jinyue had been to Shawan County many times before. The brother and sister split up to find saltpeter and agreed to meet in half an hour.

Lin Jinyue went to the pharmacy with ease, bought a small amount of saltpeter, and then waited for her brother at the city gate.

Seeing that Lin Xueqing had not returned, Lin Jinyue squatted in the corner and tried to see if she could make ice.

She put the saltpeter into a porcelain bowl, added a small amount of water, and soon the water in the bowl froze into ice.

The ice was indeed successfully made, but when she turned around, she saw Gu Shao staring at her with shining eyes.

To be precise, I was staring at the ice in her hand.

For half an hour, Gu Shao kept asking her how the ice was made and whether it could be made in large quantities.

Lin Jinyue really didn't want to talk to him.

This is my way of making money!

Unexpectedly, Gu Shao went and bought some food to try and get closer to her, asking, "It's nothing, if you don't want to talk about it, then don't. I heard that you made the crossbows?"

Lin Jinyue nodded.

Gu Shao kept asking her how to make crossbows, if there was any way to increase the range and attack power, and how she managed to make such a bulky thing so small and more lethal than ordinary crossbows.

Then he asked her if she would like her father and brother to join the army, and that he would then petition for them to be promoted to the rank of general of the fourth rank.

Lin Jinyue's head was throbbing from his nagging, and she didn't want to say a single word to him.

Unexpectedly, the aloof young general from just a few days ago has become so talkative. Lin Jinyue racked her brains, trying to think of a way to fool him.

Lin Jinyue had no idea how much of a shock Gu Shao had received from the things she had created.

Gu Shao was also helpless.

This little girl has eaten and collected the trinkets, so why does she keep changing the subject when it comes to serious matters?

My own younger sisters aren't this difficult to deal with.

Gu Shao knew that she wouldn't say what she didn't want to say, so he didn't ask any more questions.

Seeing that he seemed a little disappointed, Lin Jinyue thought that since he had received so many things from the other person, he should at least give something back, so she asked, "Or, shall I tell you something else?"

Gu Shao's eyes lit up, and he asked, "What?"

Lin Jinyue racked her brains; she had so much in her mind that any one of it could shock all the ancient people.

She was thinking about how to come up with something that wasn't too horrifying, yet would still earn her a favor.

After a while, Lin Jinyue asked, "Do you know how to make salt?"

Gu Shao shook his head, "No, I don't know any salt merchants. How could you make salt? Selling smuggled salt is..."

Lin Jinyue nodded perfunctorily: "Yes, I know, it's a beheading, but we won't sell it. It's just to save money on salt. Salt is a good thing. It can be used to make pickled meat, fish, and vegetables, and it can also preserve food for a longer time."

Gu Shao became interested and, without beating around the bush, asked directly, "What do you want in order to be willing to give me this method?"

Lin Jinyue: "Let me think... how about General Gu does me a favor in the future, but we need to agree on three rules."

Gu Shaole was amused. If he wanted Gu Shaole's help, they had to agree on three rules.

This little girl is quite bold.

Gu Shao: "Tell me."

Lin Jinyue then laid out three rules:

"First, you can't tell anyone that she taught you this; second, you can't ask me how those things are made unless I'm willing to trade with you; third, you can't tell anyone the secrets of our village."

Gu Shao finally understood that Lin Jinyue hadn't been very talkative earlier because she found him too noisy.

He thought to himself that this young girl was quite cunning.

Gu Shao then asked, "So when will you be willing next time?"

If she's willing to come to him again, it'll only be when there's something in the village that can't be resolved.

Lin Jinyue thought for a moment, "I can't say for sure, let's see how it goes. How about we add one..."

Lin Jinyue paused, almost saying she should add him on WeChat and contact him if needed. It had been almost two months, and she still hadn't adapted to life in ancient times.

Gu Shao left his address, only saying that he could come to him when he wanted.

Lin Jinyue didn't want to get too involved with him, but for the time being, she really couldn't find a powerful patron to rely on.

These past few days, she invited people from Yunhe Village to help build her house. After getting to know them, someone told her to be wary of Chen Da and his son, as they were capable of any underhanded thing.

Lin Jinyue then decided to use Gu Shao to handle the matter.

As for salt, Da Gan cannot sell smuggled salt. Lin Jinyue has many ways to make money, so there is no need to take the risk.

This method is a one-off deal, unlike selling medicine, which is a long-term business and won't involve too much trouble in the future.

Lin Jinyue was about to write down the method for making fine salt, but to her surprise, Gu Shao brought her a brush and Xuan paper, which immediately put her in a difficult position.

She can't write calligraphy, let alone traditional characters.

Gu Shao chuckled. "You tell me, I'll write it."

Lin Jinyue was somewhat annoyed that she had been mistaken for being illiterate for the first time.

Seeing her brother return, she called Lin Xueqing over: "Brother, quickly write down the method for making fine salt."

Lin Jinyue didn't really want to talk to Gu Shao for the time being.

Lin Xueqing nodded and went to a nearby stall to write on it with the charcoal pencil she carried with her.

Gu Shaoqi asked curiously, "Why don't you use a brush to write?"

Lin Xueqing: "No."

He doesn't use a calligraphy brush because he doesn't want to; he simply can't.

The original owner did know calligraphy, but his handwriting was so bad it was illegible. As a farmer's son, he couldn't afford paper and brushes, let alone practice. Besides, he himself had no interest in calligraphy in his previous life.

Neither brother nor sister spoke, which Gu Shao found amusing.

He was keen to befriend this group, even though he was repeatedly met with cold shoulders. The methods that Lin Jinyue and her family came up with were fatally attractive to him.

Gu Shao then said, "I recently acquired some top-quality wolf-hair brushes. How about I give them to you when I visit you in a few days?"

Lin Jinyue was shocked: "You still want to come to my house?"

Wouldn't that expose the fact that she can't write calligraphy?

Although Lin Jinyue was regarded as a lucky charm by the whole village, and although the villagers secretly regarded her as their leader, she was still forced to start her schooling again from elementary school.

Lin Jinyue doesn't want to.

So what if I can't write?

Seeing that she had some free time, she got everyone in the village to start learning simplified Chinese characters.

Seeing the obvious resistance on her face, Gu Shao quickly explained, "No, I didn't mean anything by it, it's just..."

Lin Xueqing didn't hesitate to expose Lin Jinyue: "General Gu can come, and he can bring those soldiers to play. Just remember to keep it a secret for my sister; she can't write."

Lin Jinyue glared at her brother. Why was he deliberately trying to sabotage her?

However, she could already sense the resentment her brother had felt from practicing calligraphy these past few days from those words.

Gu Shao chuckled, "Fine, I won't say."

That's settled; Gu Shao will probably go to Yunhe Village.

Lin Jinyue thought that when Gu Shao went there, she should pack up all those messy things to avoid him asking her all sorts of questions.

Lin Xueqing quickly wrote down the recipe for fine salt, handed it to Gu Shao, and prepared to leave with her sister first.

It was already late, and if they didn't go back soon, it would get dark.
