Chapter 108 Real Talks

Smith went up and studied the tractor for a while before starting it. With a mere "thump, thump," the tractor began to move. Because the area was narrow and not a field, the farm machinery couldn't be fully utilized. He couldn't practice every function, so he simplified the operation, observing the lift and the sound, paying attention to the smoke density, and estimating the power, to verify that it was as described in the brochure.

If nothing else, the infinitely variable speed technology alone impressed him. This technology had only recently become available and had yet to be widely adopted. If he could purchase a large number of tractors with similar features at a low price, he could capture the market more quickly. Furthermore, this tractor had a new feature: it could quickly adjust tire pressure. When hauling cargo, the tire pressure could be increased for faster speeds and fuel savings. For ploughing, the tire pressure could be lowered to improve traction and prevent overcompaction.

With this thought, he exited the cab, surveyed the accompanying agricultural implements, nodded, and turned to Zhu Youliang, saying, "Zhu, I'm very interested in your all-purpose agricultural tractor. Now, I need detailed information on it." Actually, he wanted to mention that he wanted to purchase the continuously variable transmission technology directly, as it was applicable to more than just agricultural tractors. However, knowing they wouldn't sell it, he didn't mention it. It was strange that this technology wasn't used in more expensive cars, but rather in tractors first. However, that wasn't his concern.

Upon hearing this, Zhu Youliang immediately handed him the information. Guo Daqiang also learned what Smith had said from the translator brought by Secretary Zhao. He excitedly clasped his hands together, wondering if this meant Smith wanted to buy their all-purpose tractor.

While Smith was still reading the documents, he waved to Zhu Youliang. Waiting for him to come over, he whispered in his ear, "We'll be able to negotiate the price later. As long as they're willing to buy, even a lower price is fine. Earning foreign exchange is important, so don't be stubborn." He was thinking, since Zhu Youliang knew English, he might as well give him full responsibility; his eloquence wasn't as good as his. Besides, it would be even better to talk directly with Smith, and he could tell Smith admired Zhu Youliang greatly.

Zhu Youliang didn't think so, but he nodded anyway. As for how the negotiations would unfold, we'd just have to see what the situation was. Secretary Zhao, noticing Smith's interest in buying, was about to give Guo Daqiang some instructions when he was called away by a staff member. He had no choice but to ask Guo Daqiang to treat Smith and his group well before he hurried off.

Smith looked at it for a long time before he looked up and called his secretary over. The two of them walked to the other side of the tractor and discussed in a low voice.

Soon, they returned. Smith got straight to the point and told Zhu Youliang, "To be on the safe side, I need to arrange for a professional to evaluate this machine. If the evaluation is favorable, we can sit down and discuss the purchase."

Zhu Youliang nodded, thinking it was a good idea to be cautious, as it showed he really wanted to buy. So he said confidently, "Of course we will. We are very confident."

"Excellent. I have an old friend who works in the automotive industry and knows much more about it than I do. He's also visiting your country this time, bringing a professional auto tester with him. I've already sent someone to invite him over. How about we sit down and chat? I'm very curious about you. I've never heard of someone as talented as you. Oh, and your wife, I remember you said you designed this all-purpose agricultural tractor together with your wife?"

Zhu Youliang smiled and said, "Yes, my wife is much more capable than me. She designed the engine of this new agricultural tractor. In our country, there are so many people who are more capable than us, so we don't show it."

Smith nodded: "I see, I wonder if I will be lucky enough to meet her?"

"She didn't come this time, but there will be opportunities in the future."

"I'm really looking forward to it."

"By the way, Zhu, are you and your wife interested in going to Country M for development? Or further studies? Don't worry about the expenses, our Husk Company can cover it all."

Zhu Youliang glanced at Guo Daqiang, who was busy entertaining Smith's entourage and paying no attention to their conversation. As for Xue Yi, he was teaching a foreign guest how to drive an ordinary tractor.

Xiao Zhang's English was better than Guo Daqiang's. Although his spoken English wasn't good, he could at least understand most of what was said. He had just gone to get some water and came back just in time to hear Smith's words. He looked at Zhu Youliang nervously, "Don't agree to this!"

Zhu Youliang hadn't expected this, so he pretended to hesitate and said, "Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Smith, but we don't have any plans for the time being."

Smith didn't feel disappointed. Instead, he took out a business card and handed it to him, saying, "This is my personal business card. If you're interested later, you can contact me at any time. Believe me, in Country M, you'll have better development and, of course, the best treatment. Our country has always respected talent."

Seeing that Zhu Youliang refused, Xiao Zhang finally breathed a sigh of relief. He hurried over with a water bottle and said, "Mr. Smith, you must be thirsty. Have some tea."

"Thank you!" Smith said with a smile.

Zhu Youliang gave Secretary Xiao Zhang a reassuring look and then began recommending a standard farm tractor to Smith. Smith was clearly not interested in standard tractors, but offered to introduce him to a friend who might be interested.

Upon hearing this, Zhu Youliang had an idea. He asked if he had any friends in the retail industry who might have some small items. He then had Secretary Zhang take out his large bag and show him the headdress inside. Smith only remarked that the headdress was novel, but clearly wasn't interested. So he called over Vivian, the only woman in his entourage, and asked her to see if she liked any.
