Chapter 15: Going up the mountain

Before dawn the next day, Zhu Youguo went to work with Liang Yuan as usual. On the way, the people in the team were much more enthusiastic towards him. Wow, in just one morning, the news that he was going to work at the agricultural machinery station spread everywhere. He was calm in his heart and did not think it was such a big deal, but he put on a smug expression. Liang Yuan watched from the side and found it funny. In order to maintain their image, the couple had to work so hard. Thinking that the original owner had a bad reputation in the village and looked down on the people in the village, she was also indifferent to everyone. Usually, others would not talk to her when they saw her, but today they took the initiative to talk to her, and there was envy and jealousy in their words, saying that she was lucky. She just smiled and did not argue with others. For this, she got a good reputation.

Here, Zhu Xingtong was still sleeping soundly, but Tongtong lifted the sheet that was covering her face.

"Sister, get up and go to work."

"We have a day off today and we won't have to work. You can play by yourself first. I'll take you out to play after I've slept for a while." Zhu Xingtong turned over and prepared to continue sleeping. Her head still hurt.

"My sister is a big lazy bum." Zhu Yuetong said as he sat down on the edge of the bed and started playing with the stones. He had picked them up himself and kept them in his pocket all day long, treating them very preciously.

When Zhu Xingtong woke up again, the sun was already high in the sky. She turned her head and didn't see Tongtong. Fortunately, she soon heard Zhu Yuetong's voice. The little guy was chatting with her friends across the yard, and her voice was very loud. Seeing her come out, the little guy immediately ran over, "Sister, you are finally up, let's go to work."

Zhu Xingtong was puzzled and asked him why he liked working so much.

The little guy answered without hesitation: "There are many people at work, and there are people to play with me."

Zhu Xingtong touched his head and said, "You don't have to work today. I'll take you to pick some prickly moss later." She planned to take a day off today.

When Tongtong heard there was food, he immediately changed his tone and said, "Then can we bring the tiger head from next door?"

Zhu Xingtong shook his head: "I'm afraid not. He is too young and his grandmother doesn't let him go out." Hu Tou is the grandson of the Chen family next door. He is only two years old this year and is looked after by his grandmother every day.

Zhu Yuetong didn't hesitate. "Forget it, let's bring him some prickly ash when we come back. Sister, I know where there's a lot of prickly ash. I'll take you there later."

Zhu Xingtong nodded and let him play by himself first and then go wash up before coming out.

By the time Zhu Xingtong came out, Zhu Yuetong had already explained to Hu Tou that he was going out. Hu Tou was also clamoring to go out, and his grandmother was trying to coax him. Seeing this, she quickly put on the straw hat in her hand and went out with her brother.

After leaving the house, Zhu Xingtong took her brother to the east end of the village. About a hundred meters away stood a small hill. The hill, about twenty meters high, was bare of trees, save for a few vegetable gardens to the west. Beyond these gardens grew shrubs, some of which bore prickly moss. Prickly moss was covered in sharp thorns; you could pick the tender parts, remove the thorns, and peel them before eating. It was sweet and delicious. Zhu Xingtong hadn't known about it until Zhu Yuetong asked her to pick it. She'd fallen in love with it ever since. On Planet 233, they'd mostly eaten things like nutrient solution. While nutritious, the taste was far from impressive, and even if it tasted good, you'd get tired of it after drinking too much. Since arriving here, she hadn't had much good food, but she was content. In the countryside, unless there was a famine, there was plenty to eat. For example, there was a white grass root growing on the ridges of the fields that was also sweet, tasting a lot like sugarcane. Although she had only been here a short time, she'd learned a lot about food.

She was pinching the thorn moss when she heard a rustling noise ahead. She looked closely and saw it was a rat snake, gone in a flash. Perhaps their conversation had disturbed it, and it was about to move to another place.

She told Zhu Yue to be careful of snakes and started picking the thorn moss again. Soon, she had a handful of thorn moss in her hand. There was really a lot of thorn moss in this place.

After picking the thorn moss, the two sat on the hillside. Zhu Xingtong was responsible for removing the thorns that had not been removed, while Tongtong peeled the skin, giving half to his sister and stuffing the other half into his mouth. They both enjoyed the meal very much.

While eating, Tongtong suddenly stood up and pointed in the distance and said, "Sister, rabbit."

Zhu Xingtong looked up and saw a gray rabbit in the grass in the distance. However, it disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Zhu Xingtong released her mental power and indeed found an extremely hidden rabbit hole nearby. She gave the prickly moss in her hand that had been de-thorned to her brother, and walked towards the place where the rabbit disappeared.

"Sister, wait for me." Tongtong climbed up.

"Shh!" Zhu Xingtong signaled him to speak in a lower voice.

Tongtong quickly covered her mouth with her free hand and followed her on tiptoe.

The rabbit hole had three exits. Zhu Xingtong first blocked one of the exits with mud. Then she took out a box of matches, picked up some half-dry firewood, and stuffed it into one of the hole entrances, while she waited at the other hole entrance. After a while, there was a noise from the hole, and the whole family of two adults and five children ran out. She quickly caught the two big ones. Two of the three small ones ran away, and Zhu Yuetong caught one. Zhu Xingtong tied the legs and feet of the three rabbits with grass, asked Zhu Yuetong to watch, and she chased the two little rabbits. The two little rabbits were about one month old and could not run fast, so she caught them quickly.

Zhu Yuetong was so happy that he couldn't stop grinning, and kept muttering: "Rabbit!"

Zhu Xingtong was also very happy. She hadn't eaten meat much since coming here. However, she didn't plan to eat all the rabbits. Instead, she planned to raise them at home so that she would have more rabbits to eat later. Although she didn't know how to raise rabbits, she thought, perhaps Huang Mei could.

After stamping out the remaining dry firewood to prevent a forest fire, she hid the rabbits in her vegetable basket, picked some more vegetables, and then took her brother home. On the way, she warned Tongtong not to tell anyone about the rabbits. It was still the era of the household contract responsibility system, so it was better to be cautious.

On the way back, she passed by her uncle's house and saw the chimney smoking. She looked into the window and saw her grandmother cooking at home alone, so she took her brother in.

Zhu Yuetong was a little excited when he saw Huang Mei. Zhu Xingtong looked back and then he quickly covered his mouth.

Huang Mei heard the noise and turned around to see the brother and sister. She hurriedly asked them how they got there, if they were hungry, and if they wanted some malt sugar.

Zhu Yuetong nodded quickly, but Zhu Xingtong held her back, asked her to look at the rabbit in the basket, and asked her how to raise rabbits.

Huang Mei exclaimed in surprise at first, then said: "Your grandfather knows how to raise them. Cut some tender grass for them to eat first. Don't tell anyone about this in advance. When your grandfather comes back in the evening, I will ask him to go to your house to teach you." After that, she asked how the rabbits were caught.

After Zhu Xingtong explained, she immediately praised her granddaughter for being clever, which made Zhu Xingtong feel embarrassed.

After dinner, Zhu Xingtong took his brother home with the malt sugar.
