Chapter 3: Going to Work and Apologizing

Zhu Xingtong glanced at her father thoughtfully, then immediately suggested that she, too, go to work in the afternoon. When she had nothing to do in the morning, she took out the diary her mother had given her and flipped through it, realizing that work points were very important here.

Liang Yuan thought about the girls who worked with him in the morning and nodded: "I'll take you there in the afternoon, and bring Tongtong with you."

Zhu Yuetong was very excited after hearing this and said that he would be a good boy.

As they were talking, a woman walked in with a boy about seven or eight years old, carrying a basket of eggs. She came to apologize. The woman was Ergou's younger brother's wife, named Huanghua, and the boy, Erniu. They were close friends and often played together. Yesterday, he noticed ripe mulberries on a mulberry tree in the woods by the river, so he ran over and asked the girl to go pick some. The tree was small, half leaning into the river. Hoping to pick more mulberries, the two children climbed onto the trunk and accidentally fell into the water. The boy was lucky enough to land near the river, but before the girl fell, she panicked and tried to grab the trunk, but it broke, and she fell into the river, being swept away. Although it was an accident, they had been there together, and the boy was fine, but the girl and her family were nearly killed. Huanghua felt a little bad about it, so she sent a basket of eggs, a basket she had been saving for a long time.

Someone had told Liang Yuan about this while she was mowing the lawn this morning. Honestly, the child falling into the water was an accident, and the couple's death was pure misfortune. Many people had jumped into the water to save others, and both of the original owners knew how to swim, so everyone else was fine, but they were the ones who died. If their family hadn't come along, this matter wouldn't have been over.

A lot of people in the village were gossiping yesterday, and Erniu was beaten up.

Liang Yuan refused several times, but seeing Huang Hua's insistence, she thought about it and finally accepted it. If she accepted the basket of eggs, the matter would be over. What if she didn't go? Their family was still standing here, safe and sound.

Huang Hua was reluctant to part with the eggs, and even more afraid that Liang Yuan would ask for too much. After all, Liang Yuan had a bad reputation in the village and had suffered so much the previous day, so she borrowed a basket of eggs and quickly brought it over. After Erniu apologized and Liang Yuan counted the eggs into her basket, she hurriedly took Erniu home.

"Eggs, so many eggs." Tongtong said while squatting next to the eggs.

"We'll each have one tonight." Liang Yuan, fearing he might knock over the basket of eggs, hurriedly carried it into the house. She thought, "I'll ask Huang Mei to send a few eggs to the doctor and Zhou Yan. I heard they were so helpful yesterday." She also needed to show some appreciation to the people who had helped rescue the man yesterday. The thought made her reluctant to part with the basket of eggs; she feared there wouldn't be many left.

When Zhu Xingtong saw this, he took his brother into the house. They had to eat quickly and then go to the fields.
