Chapter 60 What I Saw on the Train

Soon it was the end of August, and Zhu Youliang and Liang Yuan both boarded a train heading west to go to college.

The train was still moving very slowly, and the two of them had to stay on the train for more than a day, so they brought steamed buns and eggs with them, so they could eat with the hot water on the train when they were hungry. Zhu Yourong had made the steamed buns for them. To avoid being looked down upon, she used only white flour, no mixed grains, and they looked snow-white. As soon as the two of them took out the buns, they heard the sound of slurping from the other side.

To save money, they bought hard seats. Opposite them sat four people: two young women, an old woman, and a small child. The drooling sound came from the child. Food was scarce, and there were only a few steamed buns, so Zhu Youliang and Liang Yuan didn't give him any. But to avoid making him cry with envy, the two ate quickly, devouring the buns in no time.

Seeing that the child was about to cry, the old woman took out a handkerchief from her pocket, slowly unfolded it, took out a piece of cake from it, and stuffed it into the child's hand.

Liang Yuan ate too fast and felt choked. He quickly pushed Zhu Youliang and said, "Go get some hot water!"

"Hey." Zhu Youliang responded and went to get some water with an iron lunch box.

At this time, the two girls who had been sleeping woke up. Seeing Zhu Youliang passing by them, they took a look and blushed.

After Zhu Youliang left, the girl with the pigtail across from her asked, "Comrade, is that girl who just left your girlfriend? She's so pretty."

Liang Yuan smiled and said, "We got married a long time ago and have two children."

After hearing this, the two girls showed a hint of disappointment on their faces, but they quickly recovered. The girl with the pigtail said with some pride, "We are students from Northwest University. Are you educated youth? Are you going back to the city?"

"I am an educated youth, my husband is a farmer, and we also go to school." Liang Yuan shook her head.

The girl with braids next to her suddenly asked, "Which university are you from?"

"Nanjing University of Technology, my husband and I are in the same school." Liang Yuan said as she glanced towards the aisle, wondering why that guy was so slow in getting the water.

After hearing this, the two girls fell silent for a moment and didn't say anything.

The old woman asked, "You are an educated youth, so you must be from the city, right? Why didn't you go back to the city?"

Liang Yuan glanced at her and saw that she didn't mean any harm, so she replied, "I haven't thought about returning to the city since I married my husband. Even if we do, we should go back together."

The old woman nodded. "You are a sensible person. Unlike some people, you are so cruel that you even abandon your children just to go back to the city."

After hearing this, Wang Zhizhi, who had a single braid, opened her eyes and looked at the old woman.

Seeing her curiosity, the old woman pointed at the child in front of her and said, "This child is my daughter's. She insisted on marrying an educated youth. Now, the educated youth found out he got into university and ran away with the admission letter overnight. My daughter was so angry that she went crazy. Our family is poor and can't afford to raise the child. She had no choice but to go find his father. What a sin!"

The child had just eaten a piece of cake when he saw the old woman pointing at him and smiling at her, obviously not understanding what her grandmother was talking about.

As soon as these words were spoken, the girl with double braids turned pale.

Wang Zhizhi didn't notice and sighed, "It can't be helped. If they don't return to the city, will they just waste their whole lives in the countryside? They are all educated youth. They shouldn't be trapped on the land. Instead, they should use their knowledge to make greater contributions to the country."

"Bah!" the old woman said excitedly, "Who stopped you from contributing to the country? You want to go back to the city, but you don't want to take my daughter with you. You shouldn't have seduced my daughter in the first place. My daughter is blind, which is fine, but this child is innocent. Is this what a scholar does?"

The old woman was so excited that she frightened the child and made him cry loudly. She quickly touched the child's head and said, "Don't cry, don't cry, didn't grandma say you are my good boy?"

Wang Zhizhi awkwardly took over the conversation and said, "Mother-in-law, that's not what I meant. I meant that your son-in-law might have his own difficulties."

"You have no reason to be so stubborn, you can't even control your belt," the old woman scolded. Her words were so vulgar that Wang Zhizhi blushed again and didn't dare to say anything.

Pu turned around and saw his friend's face was pale. He asked her hurriedly, "Yingxiu, what's wrong with you? Don't you get carsick?"

Lin Yingxiu shook her head weakly: "Zhizhi, I'm fine, don't worry."

"Your face is so pale. How can you be okay? Wait a minute, I'll go find the flight attendant and ask if there are any medical staff on the train." Wang Zhizhi said and walked out.

The old woman thought Lin Yingxiu was frightened by her, and hurriedly said, "I'm not talking about you two, it's really because my son-in-law is such a jerk that I got a little excited. Don't mind it, young lady."

"It's okay, maybe it's because I didn't have breakfast." Lin Yingxiu said casually.

The old woman looked at Liang Yuan after hearing this. Liang Yuan had been silent the entire time, so she pretended not to understand what the old woman meant. This girl was fine just now, but it was obvious that she had become like this after listening to the old woman's words. She must be worried about something.

The old woman retracted her gaze and took out her handkerchief: "You city people are all cruel." After that, she took a piece of cake and handed it to Lin Yingxiu.

Lin Yingxiu's face paled even more at her words. Knowing she had misunderstood, she quickly explained, "Thank you, old lady. I have something to eat. I just didn't have a good appetite, so I didn't have breakfast." Then, she stood up and pulled out an egg from her bag and handed it to the child. After a moment's thought, she took out a small apple and gave it to the old lady.
