Lu Zheng looked coldly at the Duke of Zhenguo.
The Duke of Zhenguo acted like a child showing off his most precious possessions, taking all the paintings out of the vase and placing them on the table, unfolding them one by one.
"This is Jia'er riding a horse, this is Jia'er gathering herbs, this is Jia'er painting her eyebrows, this is Jia'er reading a book, this is..." The Duke of Zhenguo introduced them to Lu Zheng one by one, becoming happier as he spoke. "I have many more. Let me tell you, I have a secret room, an entire secret room filled with your mother's paintings over the years. Your sister doesn't even know about them."
Lu Zheng glanced at the portrait. It was indeed a portrait of his mother. He had never seen it in the Lu family, but he had seen it in the Zhou family.
He interrupted the Duke of Zhenguo's rambling, "Do you regret it? Do you regret getting involved with the Lin family? What's the use of bringing out these paintings now? My mother is dead, dead! No matter how many paintings you paint, she won't come back!"
Zhenguo Gong's happy expression vanished instantly. He took two steps back, looked at the paintings he treasured, and murmured, "Jia'er is still here. Jia'er has always been here."
Lu Zheng felt inexplicably angry and, not wanting to see the Duke of Zhenguo, ran out.
The Duke of Zhenguo did not call out to him again, but carefully put away his painting. Blood flowed down his forehead, but he did not let the blood droplets get on the painting.
Before long, the steward arrived with a doctor to bandage the Duke of Zhenguo's wounds.
"Where is the heir apparent?" the Duke of Zhenguo asked.
“Master, I just ran into the young master in the courtyard. He said he went to the Gu family, but only to escort you back before going to entertain the Gu family’s guests,” the steward replied.
"Hmm," the Duke of Zhenguo responded, and then fell silent.
...
Lu Zheng walked from the Duke of Zhenguo's mansion to the Gu family's residence. In fact, he did not intend to come to the Gu family's residence again. His current mood was not suitable for appearing in front of the Gu family members, but he came here involuntarily.
In the end, he didn't go in, but instead climbed a tree over at the Gu family's North Garden.
He looked at the lights in the Beiyuan Nursery and could still hear Gu Xin talking to someone and laughing.
Hearing Gu Xin laugh, he laughed too.
Bai Er and the others are now the Gu family's secret guards. They had already discovered Lu Zheng, but none of them showed up.
The cold wind howled, and Bai Er finally came to Lu Zheng's side: "General, it's cold outside, aren't you going to come inside?"
Lu Zheng shook his head: "Get some fresh air and clear your head."
Bai Er: "Oh."
Then he left.
Another quarter of an hour passed, and the Crown Prince and the young men of the Gu family had all fallen asleep. Gu Xin and the others spoke in hushed tones and planned to return to the dining hall.
"Third Sister," Xue Qianyu called out to Gu Xin.
"What's wrong, brother-in-law?" Gu Xin stopped and walked over.
"Lu Er is on that tree outside. He probably had a fight with his father. I think he's been there for almost half an hour. Why don't you go check on him?" Xue Qianyu said.
"Oh? You've been here so long? I'll go check on you." Gu Xin adjusted her cloak, then pulled off Gu En's cloak before heading towards the courtyard wall.
Gu Xin climbed over her own courtyard wall for Lu Zheng the first time. After climbing over the wall, she jumped from the wall to a tree and threw her cloak at Lu Zheng: "Lu Zheng, are you planning to freeze yourself to death and then give me a reputation for being a jinx?"
Lu Zheng hugged Gu Xin tightly, burying his head in her shoulder: "Xin Xin, let me hug you for a while, just a little while."
Gu Xin was taken aback, then reached out and hugged Lu Zheng, gently patting his back: "Don't be sad, I was just talking nonsense. Yuan Yuan, no matter what happens, you still have me."
