They found nothing by nightfall.
When General Peng Si returned from outside the city, he was puzzled to find the city gates heavily guarded. He stopped his horse and asked the soldiers guarding the city, "What's going on? Are they arresting people?"
The soldiers guarding the city reported, "Reporting to the Fourth General, the old general has ordered the arrest of the spy Lin Gui."
General Peng Si didn't realize who Lin Gui was for a long time, and only remembered after being reminded that the Uncle Lin who had followed his father for decades was named Lin Gui.
He sensed something was wrong and quickly rode back.
"Father, I saw Uncle Lin outside the city today. What did he do wrong?" General Peng asked as soon as he got home.
"You've seen him? Where?" General Peng looked sharply at General Peng Si.
His eyes held a hint of doubt, but he quickly dismissed the thought. Impossible. This was his adopted son; he could never have betrayed the country.
“He was just outside the west gate! He left in a carriage, saying he was doing something for you. I was busy at the time and didn’t ask,” General Peng Si said.
"Damn it, he took Xue'er to Lange Kingdom! What a piece of trash!" General Peng roared in anger.
"Father, there's no record of Lin Gui leaving the city from the west gate," General Peng reminded him.
“Gu Er said it himself, that’s not the real Lin Gui, just someone wearing Lin Gui’s skin! Just like when Xin’er was switched! The gatekeeper said Lin Gui didn’t go out, and Gu Er’s men said Lin Gui has been in his room since Chenshi (7-9 AM). He must have taken off his skin, taken Xue’er away, left the city, and then put on Lin Gui’s skin again!” General Peng said in a deep voice.
It has to be said that he had already guessed the truth.
General Peng immediately sent men out of the west city to chase after them, even though he knew they might not be able to catch up. But what if Xue'er was clever enough to buy them some time?
Lin Gui drove his carriage at great speed towards Lange Kingdom.
He possessed the Lange King's token, so he wasn't afraid of being investigated once he entered Lange territory.
From the moment Gu Si came to find Gu Yingxue, he felt uneasy. Without much thought, he took Gu Yingxue directly to Langge Kingdom.
He was cleaning his mask in the morning, thinking no one was around, when Gu Yingxue suddenly appeared. He wasn't sure if Gu Yingxue had seen him, but he couldn't be careless, so he knocked Gu Yingxue unconscious.
Then he thought that if he suddenly went back, his identity would be exposed, and the king might punish him. So he decided to bring back the granddaughter that the Peng family valued, which would be a way to make amends.
If the king doesn't listen to advice and insists on attacking Kuncheng, using this brat as a hostage would be quite good.
Lin Gui has been by General Peng's side for more than ten years and understands the general's personality. The general really loves this granddaughter and treats her like his own granddaughter. Perhaps she can even influence the general's judgment.
Even if that's not possible, taking her back to be the prince's woman is fine too; this girl is fourteen already.
Gu Yingxue woke up amidst a jolt. She realized she had been moved from the cupboard to a carriage, but her hands and feet were still bound and her mouth was still gagged.
Where are you taking her?
Gu Yingxue felt a little wronged. She wasn't the female lead; she was just an insignificant extra, living a life of leisure. Why did they have to mess with her?
The weather was hot and humid. She hadn't eaten or drunk anything all day, and her hands and feet had been tied up the whole time. She felt extremely uncomfortable from head to toe.
The carriage was moving very fast. She used the momentum to roll herself out of the curtain. "You're tying me up so you can at least give me some water to drink. Don't let me die of thirst, otherwise it's all for nothing."
