Gu Xin and Gu Si looked at Gu Yingxue in surprise.
Gu Yingxue said, "Before my parents took me away, I didn't have a good life in the village. I often didn't have enough to eat or wear. There was an older sister in the village who had been divorced and sent back home. Her brother treated her very well, and she stayed there for two years. She often sang for me. Her husband's family were fishermen from the coast of Jiangnan. After going out to sea, they often met people from other countries. They knew some folk songs and some of their languages. I thought it was interesting, so I asked that sister to teach me some. Just now, I understood what all three of them were saying."
Gu Xin and Gu Si looked at Gu Yingxue in disbelief.
Gu Yingxue tried her best to remain calm. There was no other way; this was the best answer she had discussed with her parents that morning.
She was the only one among all the time travelers who never lied, because someone else had already told her everything; she only needed to remain naive.
She rarely lies, but she was still somewhat flustered.
However, Gu Xin and Gu Si did not doubt her, since they trusted her. Now, they were surprised to find that Gu Yingxue could understand, so they urged her to ask!
To show that she was not familiar with the language, Gu Yingxue stammered as she communicated with the three of them. When the three of them heard that what Gu Yingxue said sounded a bit like their own languages, they were so happy that they burst into tears. If Gu Yingxue hadn't been a girl, they would have wanted to hug her and cry their hearts out.
Heaven knows what those three have been through these past few days. I should have brought the fishermen from Jiangnan with me.
Gu Xin and Gu Si watched this one-on-three exchange with amazement, patiently waiting for Gu Yingxue's reply.
After a while, Gu Yingxue said to Gu Xin and Gu Si, "They guessed that you drew a princess, Third Sister. I explained to them that you and Fifth Sister are both princesses of the Great Zhou Dynasty, but not princesses of the palace. They were granted the title of princess because of your meritorious service. They admire you very much, Third Sister. They said they had heard about you from the merchants from the Western Regions who went there to do business. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Gu Xin laughed and said, "Xue'er, tell them that we'll start learning each other's languages from now on. Let's start one by one, beginning with everyday things. For example, greetings, asking for directions, asking for prices."
Gu Yingxue nodded, then turned to explain to the three of them.
The three messengers all spoke each other's languages, so Gu Yingxue only needed to speak one language for them to understand.
Gu Yingxue learned the pronunciation and intonation of later generations, which had undergone a long period of change. The three of them still had some regional accents, but they were still able to communicate.
And so, the entire class began to exchange ideas.
A quarter of an hour later, Lord Feng arrived with several officials from the Ministry of Rites, who could hardly believe it.
In particular, these three people could call out "Lord Feng," even though their pronunciation was off. Lord Feng knew they were calling him, and he also knew the names of these three people.
He simply couldn't believe that the three of them could still say good morning.
He looked at Gu Xin in surprise.
Gu Xin shrugged: "Lord Feng, this is not my achievement. It was my sister Xue'er who learned it from others in Jiangnan over the years."
Lord Feng cupped his hands in greeting to Gu Yingxue: "This time, I am truly grateful to Miss Xue'er. I will certainly inform the Emperor of the situation truthfully."
Gu Yingxue waved her hand: "Lord Feng, you are too kind. As a citizen of the Great Zhou, I only did what I should do. I only just found out that the songs and dialects I learned from the older girls in the village when I was a child were from these three places."
