On the tenth day of the first lunar month, Gu Shouxin's family, along with the elderly couple and Lu Zhengxiao's grandmother, rode in a carriage to Qingzhou Prefecture.
Three men were driving the carriage outside, while several women sat inside.
Lu Zheng's carriage was quite large; it could comfortably accommodate seven potted plants and five more people without feeling cramped.
Grandma Gu brought Grandpa Gu a soft cushion and a thin blanket she had sewn herself with some cotton padding for him to drape over.
Grandma Gu also arranged the seating; Gu Shouxin and Lu Zheng sat on either side of her in the middle.
If it weren't for Grandma Xiao holding her back, Grandma Gu would have preferred to travel the carriage with Brother Chuan by herself, leaving the rest of the passengers inside to keep them from bothering the couple.
It had been many years since the couple last visited the prefectural city.
The younger generation didn't dare say anything about the dog food, but Grandma Xiao did.
Grandma Xiao: "Old Gu, can you please be a little more considerate in front of the children? Don't you think about this old widow? Think about your own children!"
Grandma Gu: "I call this teaching by example. If you don't understand, then go away! Also, don't tell me you're some old widow. If you're an old widow, then everyone in Zhoujia Town is seeing ghosts every day?"
Everyone except Gu Xin could understand it.
Gu Xin blinked and asked, "Grandma, why do people in Zhoujia Town see ghosts every day? Uncle said that only ugly people see ghosts, and good-looking people don't. The people in Zhoujia Town aren't ugly. I went there once before the New Year and even saw a handsome young man."
The handsome young man, Lu Zheng, smiled smugly. "Xin Xin will definitely see me."
"Your grandma was just joking. My little Xinxin, let me tell you, your uncle just inherited your grandma's ways and keeps talking nonsense." Grandma Xiao said with a smile as she hugged Gu Xin.
“Grandma Xiao, what my uncle said makes a lot of sense. For example, yesterday he told us that we shouldn’t marry someone who is handsome, capable, and from a better family than our own. His story was very convincing.” Gu Xin was a staunch supporter of her uncle, and she would usually defend him whenever others criticized him.
"Why?" Grandma Xiao asked, not quite understanding at first.
"Because my uncle has a sister named Xiao Jia, he married the wrong person." Before the time-traveling trio and Lu Zheng could stop her, Gu Xin answered.
Gu Xin had no idea that the old lady in front of her was Xiao Jia's biological mother, and she hadn't mentioned whose daughter she was.
Grandma Xiao's body stiffened.
Her little Jia...
“That was my uncle’s best friend when she was a child, a young lady. Because she married such a person, she had a terrible life. Her family wanted to avenge her, but since my uncle’s sister, Xiao Jia, had a child, her family wasn’t as powerful as Xiao Jia’s husband’s family. They could only watch as Xiao Jia was driven to her death by anger,” Gu Xin continued.
“Your uncle is right. Listen to him. When you find a partner in the future, even if he meets all your requirements, you should still write on the marriage certificate that it is ‘the only one for you,’ ‘one and only for life,’” Grandma Xiao said, patting Gu Xin’s head as she came back to her senses.
"Don't worry, Grandma Xiao! My parents and sister are very capable, no one dares to bully me. Besides, I'm working hard to become more capable too," Gu Xin said, clenching her fist.
Lu Zheng, who was rushing to catch the train: I always feel that Xin Xin's parents and sister are glaring at me, looking at me with ill intent, thinking about how to get rid of me. Is it because I missed my mother and sister last night and didn't sleep well, and I'm having a hallucination?
